Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, after departing from Abu Nagar in Rajasthan, arrived at Bheem Udayar Nagar in Gujarat. This place is considered sacred as an alternative to Gaya Ji. Gurudev set up his camp on the banks of Narayan Sarovar and began guiding the pilgrims who wished to perform Pind Daan for their ancestors, teaching them the true form of worship.
Gurudev instructed Bhai Mardana to start Kirtan and himself began reciting the Shabad:
Surati surati ralaayi-ai etu. Tanu kari tulha langhahi jetu.
Antar bhaahi tisai tu rakh. Ahinisi deeva balai.
Aisa deeva neer tarai. Jit deevai sabh sojhi pai. - Raag Ramkali, Ang 878
Meaning: Simply lighting a lamp over the water will not serve any purpose. True light is the illumination of wisdom within the human heart, which grants all forms of understanding. When a person realizes that their actions are supreme, that only their deeds will accompany them, and that their judgment will be based upon them, they will not indulge in mere rituals. Instead, they will focus on learning the true way of living life. This means concentrating one's awareness on the divine feet of the Lord, which also purifies the body and makes it acceptable.
After listening to Gurbani and its meanings, everyone was deeply influenced.
