One day, Nanak Ji left his cattle to graze in the pasture and immersed himself in deep meditation at a secluded spot. Meanwhile, his cattle wandered into a farmer’s field and caused damage to the crops. The owner of the field, angered by the loss, started arguing that the son of the village patwari (Nanak Ji) should compensate for the damage.
The dispute escalated and reached the local administrator, Rai Bular Ji. To assess the extent of the damage, Rai Ji sent one of his officials to the affected field so that the farmer could be compensated accordingly. However, when the official arrived at the field, he found no signs of any destruction. The field was completely intact, without any visible damage from the cattle.
The official returned and reported, "O Rai Ji, the field is exactly as it was before. I did not see any signs of destruction by the cattle."
Hearing this, Rai Ji remarked, "Nanak belongs to Allah, the field belongs to Allah, and the cattle also belong to Allah—so where is the loss, and what compensation is needed?"
Upon hearing this, the farmer quietly returned home.
