Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, after departing from Ajmer, proceeded towards Chittorgarh. The vast barren lands along the way had no settlements, making it difficult to find water. As a result, Bhai Mardana Ji suffered greatly from thirst. Eventually, Guru Dev reached Chittorgarh. The citizens there were astonished to see him arrive without a caravan and inquired about the purpose of his visit.
In response, Guru Dev said, "We are devotees of the One Supreme God. Therefore, we have embarked on a journey across the world to sing His praises."
Hearing this, the people replied, "Here, we believe in 24 incarnations and worship them. We have even built a pillar dedicated to the Tirthankars, and we worship it."
Upon hearing this, Guru Dev instructed Bhai Mardana Ji to perform kirtan, while he himself recited the following verses:
Ekam ekankaar niraala. Amar ajoni jaat na jaala.
Agam agochar roop na rekhi-aa. Khojat khojat ghat ghat dekhi-aa.
Jo dekhi dikhaavai tis kau bali jaai. Gur parsaadi param pad paa-ee.
Raag Bilawal, Ang 838 After listening to these divine hymns, the audience raised many questions. Guru Dev addressed them in his discourse, saying:
"The creator of the entire universe is one Supreme God, who alone is eternal, unborn from a mother's womb, without form or color, formless, and a divine light pervading all beings. In contrast, incarnations are born from a mother's womb and are not immortal because they are destined to die. Therefore, anyone who undergoes birth and death cannot be the Supreme God, as they are bound by the cycle of reincarnation."
Upon hearing this explanation, everyone was satisfied.
