Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, traveling from Chattogram through Nagaland, Kamrup, Golaghat, and Guwahati, eventually reached Dhubri. There, he visited a revered site of the Vaishnav tradition, where a priest named Pandit Shankar Dev was the chief priest. Pandit Shankar Dev worshipped with immense devotion and unwavering faith. Guru Dev was greatly pleased with his devotion but explained to him, "You have immense faith, but if you combine it with knowledge, you will become complete.
Because blind faith without knowledge pushes one into a deep well."
Hearing this, Pandit Shankar Dev began asking Guru Dev questions, saying, "O revered one! Please point out my mistakes and guide me on the right path."
Guru Dev then said, "The sources of knowledge that you have, the sacred spiritual scriptures, should be worshipped. That means spreading and sharing the wisdom contained within them is the true form of worship. Honoring the sources of knowledge—the scriptures—is the real way to revere them. If, instead of seeking knowledge, we waste our time worshipping lifeless idols, our rituals will become futile. Therefore, we must carefully contemplate and walk the spiritual path with wisdom."
Pandit Shankar Dev was deeply influenced by Guru Dev’s profound teachings. From that day onward, he renounced idol worship and began promoting the worship of the formless, eternal, divine light—Akal Purakh—without the use of idols. He made the pursuit of knowledge his ultimate goal and shaped his conduct based on that wisdom.
