After departing from Chittagong, Guru Nanak…
After departing from Chittagong, Guru Nanak Dev Ji traveled through several important places and met various people before reaching the tribal region. There, two clans were constantly engaged in conflict. The leader of the more powerful clan was a man named Devaloot, who was extremely ruthless. He mercilessly killed members of the opposing faction, which fueled an ongoing guerrilla war between the two sides. They remained engrossed in harming each other, preventing the region's development.
Due to constant uncertainty, agriculture and farming were nearly impossible. As a result, the only sources of food were roots, fruits, and hunting. Since they lacked resources for clothing and wealth, men and women covered themselves with grass or leaves to hide their private parts. When Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived there, members of Devaloot's clan quickly captured him and his companions, suspecting that they might be allies of the opposing faction.
Devaloot, due to his fierce appearance, already looked terrifying. On top of that, he roared in anger. However, seeing Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s calm demeanor, he was surprised. Guru Ji attempted to explain in a gentle voice that they were his guests and that his behavior towards them was not appropriate. Impressed by Guru Ji’s radiant presence, Devaloot immediately ordered food for Guru Ji and his companions and started discussing matters with him.
Guru Ji explained to him that the root cause of their suffering was internal conflict and strife. If they resolved their differences, they could unite as a great force, bringing a transformation in their standard of living. By eliminating fear, they could lead a stable life and progress like the people in the plains, who had advanced significantly due to peaceful living and were now considered civilized. Guru Ji's words resonated with Devaloot.
Devaloot then said, “I have grown weary of this long-standing conflict. In truth, we also desire peace. But how can it be achieved? Our enmity never seems to end; instead, the desire for revenge increases with each passing moment, bringing endless calamities upon both factions. Not a single day passes in peace.”
Guru Ji responded, “Let us attempt to establish an agreement between both clans. If you accept my conditions, the impossible can become possible.”
Devaloot asked, “What are those conditions?”
Guru Ji replied, “Simply grant the opposing faction the same right to live as yourselves, and do not mistreat them. The main issue is hatred towards one another. If you allow them an equal right to live, the conflicts will automatically end.”
Devaloot agreed to this fact. One day, his soldiers captured some members of the opposing clan and reported, “These men came to burn our settlements, but we caught them in time.” Upon hearing this, Devaloot immediately ordered their execution. However, Guru Ji intervened.
Guru Ji said, “No! This is where you are making a mistake. This is the moment to use wisdom and end the long-standing conflict between both clans forever.”
Devaloot asked, “What should I do now?”
Guru Ji advised him to treat the captives with great kindness and win over their hearts. Then, through these same men, send a message to the opposing clan’s leader and his allies to initiate peace talks. Success in this noble endeavor was highly likely. Devaloot appreciated Guru Ji’s suggestion. He treated the captives well and introduced them to Guru Ji.
Guru Ji explained to the captives that living together in love and harmony was beneficial for everyone. He urged them to convince their clan to agree to a peaceful settlement. The captives also found this proposal appealing. In reality, they too desired peace. Thus, they immediately agreed, and Devaloot released them so they could persuade their people.
A few days later, a meeting was held between both factions under Guru Ji’s mediation. Inspired by Guru Ji, Devaloot displayed great generosity. As a result, the opposing clan also promised to cease hostilities and swore that if they were granted equal rights to live, they would abandon their desire for revenge. Under Guru Ji’s guidance, both clans reconciled, expressing their wish to live with brotherhood and unity.
Thus, the long-standing enmity and internal warfare in the tribal Naga mountain region came to a permanent end. The people began to follow the path of progress. After ensuring peace in the region, Guru Ji prepared to continue his journey.
