Guru Nanak Dev Ji Sakhi #39

In those days, there was a huge banyan tree…

In those days, there was a huge banyan tree in Prayag, which was named Akshay Vat. Some priests had spread stories that whoever donated all their wealth to the priests and then committed suicide by jumping from the top of this tree would go directly to Vaikunth Dham. This false propaganda was so strong that many wealthy people, falling into this trap, were often seen committing suicide.

Thus, when Guru Baba Nanak Dev Ji arrived there, a person belonging to a noble family had fallen into the trap of some priests. Deceived by the promise of reaching Vaikunth Dham, he had given away all his wealth to these people and was ready to climb the tree and jump to his death. However, just in time, Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived there and immediately warned the person against committing such foolishness. He rebuked the priests, saying, "You deceive innocent people, extort their wealth, and mislead them into committing suicide."

At first, the priests were furious upon seeing their scheme fail, but upon witnessing Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s divine radiance and wisdom, they hesitated. Due to Guru Ji’s intervention, the tragedy was averted, but to awaken the gathered spectators from their blind faith and superstitions, Guru Ji began to preach. He explained that our human body is a priceless treasure, which, once lost, cannot be regained. Therefore, we should not destroy it without reason. In reality, this world is a land of karma, where human beings must earn the wealth of God's name, which is the only means to free themselves from the cycle of birth and death. Hence, one should never fall into doubt but should always strive to walk the path of truth.

At that moment, Guru Ji asked Bhai Mardana Ji to play the rabab, and he himself recited the following hymn:

Doubida na padao har bin hor na poojao madai masaan na jaai ॥ Trisna raach na par ghar jaawa trisna naam bujhaai ॥

Raag Sorath, Ang 634 Meaning: One should never live in doubt and should not place faith in anything other than God. Apart from reciting God’s name, one should worship nothing else, nor should one visit cremation grounds or other such places. The thirst for materialistic desires can only be quenched through the remembrance of God’s name.
