ਤੂੰ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਣਾ ਕਾਲਿਆ ਕੀ ਵਾੜੀਐ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਛੰਤ ਘਰੁ ੩ ॥

āsā mahlā 1 chhant gharu 3 ॥

आसा महला १ छंत घरु ३ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl, Chhant, Third House:

ਤੂੰ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਣਾ ਕਾਲਿਆ ਕੀ ਵਾੜੀਐ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

tūṃ suṇi harṇā kāliā kī vāṛīai rātā rām ॥

तूं सुणि हरणा कालिआ की वाड़ीऐ राता राम ॥

Listen, O black deer: why are you so attached to the orchard of passion?

ਬਿਖੁ ਫਲੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਦਿਨ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

bikhu phalu mīṭhā chāri din phiri hōvai tātā rām ॥

बिखु फलु मीठा चारि दिन फिरि होवै ताता राम ॥

The fruit of sin is sweet for only a few days, and then it grows hot and bitter.

ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾਤਾ ਖਰਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਰਤਾਪਏ ॥

phiri hōi tātā kharā mātā nām binu partāpaē ॥

फिरि होइ ताता खरा माता नाम बिनु परतापए ॥

That fruit which intoxicated you has now become bitter and painful, without the Naam.

ਓਹੁ ਜੇਵ ਸਾਇਰ ਦੇਇ ਲਹਰੀ ਬਿਜੁਲ ਜਿਵੈ ਚਮਕਏ ॥

ōhu jēv sāir dēi lahrī bijul jivai chamkaē ॥

ओहु जेव साइर देइ लहरी बिजुल जिवै चमकए ॥

It is temporary, like the waves on the sea, and the flash of lightning.

ਹਰਿ ਬਾਝੁ ਰਾਖਾ ਕੋਇ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੋਇ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥

hari bājhu rākhā kōi nāhī sōi tujhhi bisāriā ॥

हरि बाझु राखा कोइ नाही सोइ तुझहि बिसारिआ ॥

Without the Lord, there is no other protector, but you have forgotten Him.

ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਰਹਿ ਹਰਣਾ ਕਾਲਿਆ ॥੧॥

sachu kahai nānku chēti rē man marhi harṇā kāliā ॥1॥

सचु कहै नानकु चेति रे मन मरहि हरणा कालिआ ॥१॥

Nanak speaks the Truth. Reflect upon it, O mind; you shall die, O black deer. ||1||

ਭਵਰਾ ਫੂਲਿ ਭਵੰਤਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

bhavrā phūli bhavntiā dukhu ati bhārī rām ॥

भवरा फूलि भवंतिआ दुखु अति भारी राम ॥

O bumble bee, you wander among the flowers, but terrible pain awaits you.

ਮੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਛਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

mai guru pūchhhiā āpaṇā sāchā bīchārī rām ॥

मै गुरु पूछिआ आपणा साचा बीचारी राम ॥

I have asked my Guru for true understanding.

ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੁਝੈ ਪੂਛਿਆ ਭਵਰੁ ਬੇਲੀ ਰਾਤਓ ॥

bīchāri satiguru mujhai pūchhhiā bhavru bēlī rātaō ॥

बीचारि सतिगुरु मुझै पूछिआ भवरु बेली रातओ ॥

I have asked my True Guru for understanding about the bumble bee, who is so involved with the flowers of the garden.

ਸੂਰਜੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜਿਆ ਤੇਲੁ ਤਾਵਣਿ ਤਾਤਓ ॥

sūrju chaṛiā piṇḍu paṛiā tēlu tāvṇi tātaō ॥

सूरजु चड़िआ पिंडु पड़िआ तेलु तावणि तातओ ॥

When the sun rises, the body will fall, and it will be cooked in hot oil.

ਜਮ ਮਗਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ ॥

jam magi bādhā khāhi chōṭā sabad binu bētāliā ॥

जम मगि बाधा खाहि चोटा सबद बिनु बेतालिआ ॥

You shall be bound and beaten on the road of Death, without the Word of the Shabad, O madman.

ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਰਹਿ ਭਵਰਾ ਕਾਲਿਆ ॥੨॥

sachu kahai nānku chēti rē man marhi bhavrā kāliā ॥2॥

सचु कहै नानकु चेति रे मन मरहि भवरा कालिआ ॥२॥

Nanak speaks the Truth. Reflect upon it, O mind; you shall die, O bumble bee. ||2||

ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਅੜਿਆ ਪਰਦੇਸੀਆ ਕਿਤੁ ਪਵਹਿ ਜੰਜਾਲੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

mērē jīaṛiā pardēsīā kitu pavhi jañjālē rām ॥

मेरे जीअड़िआ परदेसीआ कितु पवहि जंजाले राम ॥

O my stranger soul, why do you fall into entanglements?

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

sāchā sāhibu mani vasai kī phāshi jam jālē rām ॥

साचा साहिबु मनि वसै की फासहि जम जाले राम ॥

The True Lord abides within your mind; why are you trapped by the noose of Death?

ਮਛੁਲੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੀ ਨੈਣ ਰੁੰਨੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਬਧਿਕਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

machhulī vichhunnī naiṇ runnī jālu badhiki pāiā ॥

मछुली विछुंनी नैण रुंनी जालु बधिकि पाइआ ॥

The fish leaves the water with tearful eyes, when the fisherman casts his net.

ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

saṃsāru māiā mōhu mīṭhā anti bharmu chukāiā ॥

संसारु माइआ मोहु मीठा अंति भरमु चुकाइआ ॥

The love of Maya is sweet to the world, but in the end, this delusion is dispelled.

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਛੋਡਿ ਮਨਹੁ ਅੰਦੇਸਿਆ ॥

bhagti kari chitu lāi hari siu chhōḍi manhu andēsiā ॥

भगति करि चितु लाइ हरि सिउ छोडि मनहु अंदेसिआ ॥

So perform devotional worship, link your consciousness to the Lord, and dispel anxiety from your mind.

ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਜੀਅੜਿਆ ਪਰਦੇਸੀਆ ॥੩॥

sachu kahai nānku chēti rē man jīaṛiā pardēsīā ॥3॥

सचु कहै नानकु चेति रे मन जीअड़िआ परदेसीआ ॥३॥

Nanak speaks the Truth; focus your consciousness on the Lord, O my stranger soul. ||3||

ਨਦੀਆ ਵਾਹ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ਮੇਲਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

nadīā vāh vichhunniā mēlā sañjōgī rām ॥

नदीआ वाह विछुंनिआ मेला संजोगी राम ॥

The rivers and streams which separate may sometime be united again.

ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਵਿਸੁ ਭਰੇ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

jugu jugu mīṭhā visu bharē kō jāṇai jōgī rām ॥

जुगु जुगु मीठा विसु भरे को जाणै जोगी राम ॥

In age after age, that which is sweet, is full of poison; how rare is the Yogi who understands this.

ਕੋਈ ਸਹਜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨਿ ਚੇਤਿਆ ॥

kōī sahji jāṇai hari pachhāṇai satigurū jini chētiā ॥

कोई सहजि जाणै हरि पछाणै सतिगुरू जिनि चेतिआ ॥

That rare person who centers his consciousness on the True Guru, knows intuitively and realizes the Lord.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਪਚਹਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਅਚੇਤਿਆ ॥

binu nām hari kē bharmi bhūlē pachhi mugadh achētiā ॥

बिनु नाम हरि के भरमि भूले पचहि मुगध अचेतिआ ॥

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the thoughtless fools wander in doubt, and are ruined.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਧਾਹੀ ਰੁੰਨਿਆ ॥

hari nāmu bhagti na ridai sāchā sē anti dhāhī runniā ॥

हरि नामु भगति न रिदै साचा से अंति धाही रुंनिआ ॥

Those whose hearts are not touched by devotional worship and the Name of the True Lord, shall weep and wail loudly in the end.

ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਮੇਲਿ ਚਿਰੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੫॥

sachu kahai nānku sabdi sāchai mēli chirī vichhunniā ॥4॥1॥5॥

सचु कहै नानकु सबदि साचै मेलि चिरी विछुंनिआ ॥४॥१॥५॥

Nanak speaks the Truth; through the True Word of the Shabad, those long separated from the Lord, are united once again. ||4||1||5||
