ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੁਕਾਰਨਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ॥

Soohee, Fifth Mehl:

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੁਕਾਰਨਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ॥

simriti bēd purāṇ pukārni pōthīā ॥

सिम्रिति बेद पुराण पुकारनि पोथीआ ॥

The Simritees, the Vedas, the Puraanas and the other holy scriptures proclaim

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਗਾਲ੍‍ੀ ਹੋਛੀਆ ॥੧॥

nām binā sabhi kūṛu gālī hōchhīā ॥1॥

नाम बिना सभि कूड़ु गाल्‍ी होछीआ ॥१॥

That without the Naam, everything is false and worthless. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਭਗਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥

nāmu nidhānu apāru bhagtā mani vasai ॥

नामु निधानु अपारु भगता मनि वसै ॥

The infinite treasure of the Naam abides within the minds of the devotees.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਮੋਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

janam maraṇ mōhu dukhu sādhū saṅgi nasai ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

जनम मरण मोहु दुखु साधू संगि नसै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Birth and death, attachment and suffering, are erased in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||Pause||

ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਰੁੰਨਿਆ ॥

mōhi bādi ahṅkāri sarpar runniā ॥

मोहि बादि अहंकारि सरपर रुंनिआ ॥

Those who indulge in attachment, conflict and egotism shall surely weep and cry.

ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ॥੨॥

sukhu na pāin‍ imūli nām vichhunniā ॥2॥

सुखु न पाइन्‍ िमूलि नाम विछुंनिआ ॥२॥

Those who are separated from the Naam shall never find any peace. ||2||

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਧਾਰਿ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬੰਧਿਆ ॥

mērī mērī dhāri bandhni bandhiā ॥

मेरी मेरी धारि बंधनि बंधिआ ॥

Crying out, Mine! Mine!, he is bound in bondage.

ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੰਧਿਆ ॥੩॥

narki surgi avtār māiā dhandhiā ॥3॥

नरकि सुरगि अवतार माइआ धंधिआ ॥३॥

Entangled in Maya, he is reincarnated in heaven and hell. ||3||

ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥

sōdhat sōdhat sōdhi tatu bīchāriā ॥

सोधत सोधत सोधि ततु बीचारिआ ॥

Searching, searching, searching, I have come to understand the essence of reality.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੪॥

nām binā sukhu nāhi sarpar hāriā ॥4॥

नाम बिना सुखु नाहि सरपर हारिआ ॥४॥

Without the Naam, there is no peace at all, and the mortal will surely fail. ||4||

ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਤੇ ॥

āvahi jāhi anēk mari mari janmatē ॥

आवहि जाहि अनेक मरि मरि जनमते ॥

Many come and go; they die, and die again, and are reincarnated.

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭੁ ਵਾਦਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਭਰਮਤੇ ॥੫॥

binu būjhē sabhu vādi jōnī bharmatē ॥5॥

बिनु बूझे सभु वादि जोनी भरमते ॥५॥

Without understanding, they are totally useless, and they wander in reincarnation. ||5||

ਜਿਨ੍‍ ਕਉ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ਤਿਨ੍‍ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

jin‍ kau bhaē daiāl tin‍ sādhū saṅgu bhaiā ॥

जिन्‍ कउ भए दइआल तिन्‍ साधू संगु भइआ ॥

They alone join the Saadh Sangat, unto whom the Lord becomes Merciful.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਜਨੀ ਜਪਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੬॥

ammritu hari kā nāmu tinī janī japi laiā ॥6॥

अंम्रितु हरि का नामु तिन्‍ी जनी जपि लइआ ॥६॥

They chant and meditate on the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. ||6||

ਖੋਜਹਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਨੰਤ ਕੇ ॥

khōjhi kōṭi asaṅkh bahutu anant kē ॥

खोजहि कोटि असंख बहुतु अनंत के ॥

Uncounted millions, so many they are endless, search for Him.

ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਨੇੜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

jisu bujhāē āpi nēṛā tisu hē ॥7॥

जिसु बुझाए आपि नेड़ा तिसु हे ॥७॥

But only that one, who understands his own self, sees God near at hand. ||7||

ਵਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹੁ ॥

visru nāhī dātār āpaṇā nāmu dēhu ॥

विसरु नाही दातार आपणा नामु देहु ॥

Never forget me, O Great Giver - please bless me with Your Naam.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਾਉ ਏਹੁ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥੧੬॥

guṇ gāvā dinu rāti nānak chāu ēhu ॥8॥2॥5॥16॥

गुण गावा दिनु राति नानक चाउ एहु ॥८॥२॥५॥१६॥

To sing Your Glorious Praises day and night - O Nanak, this is my heart-felt desire. ||8||2||5||16||
