ਸੀਹ ਪਜੂਤੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੜ ਹੜ ਹਸੀ॥

ਸੀਹ ਪਜੂਤੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੜ ਹੜ ਹਸੀ॥

sīh pajūtī bakrī mardī hōī haṛ haṛ hasī॥

सीह पजूती बकरी मरदी होई हड़ हड़ हसी॥

A goat was caught by a lion and while about to die, it gave out a horse­ laugh.

ਸੀਹੁ ਪੁਛੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਹੋਇ ਇਤੁ ਅਉਸਰਿ ਕਿਤੁ ਰਹਸਿ ਰਹਸੀ॥

sīhu puchhai vismādu hōi itu ausri kitu rahsi rahsī॥

सीहु पुछै विसमादु होइ इतु अउसरि कितु रहसि रहसी॥

The surprised lion asked why it was so happy at such a moment (of its death).

ਬਿਨਉ ਕਰੇਂਦੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਕੀਚਨਿ ਖਸੀ॥

binau karēndī bakrī putr asāḍē kīcni khasī॥

बिनउ करेंदी बकरी पुत्र असाडे कीचनि खसी॥

Humbly the goat replied that the testicals of our male progeny are crushed in order to castrate them.

ਅਕ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਖਾਧਿਆਂ ਕੁਹਿ ਕੁਹਿ ਖਲ ਉਖਲਿ ਵਿਣਸੀ॥

ak dhatūrā khādhiāṃ kuhi kuhi khal ukhli viṇsī॥

अक धतूरा खाधिआं कुहि कुहि खल उखलि विणसी॥

We eat only wild plants of arid regions yet our skin is peeled and pounded.

ਮਾਸੁ ਖਾਨਿ ਗਲ ਵਢਿ ਕੈ ਹਾਲੁ ਤਿਨਾੜਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਹੋਵਸੀ॥

māsu khāni gal vaḍhi kai hālu tināṛā kauṇu hōvsī॥

मासु खानि गल वढि कै हालु तिनाड़ा कउणु होवसी॥

I think about the plight of those (like you) who cut the throat of others and eat their flesh.

ਗਰਬੁ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਦੇਹ ਖੇਹ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਖਾਜੁ ਅਕਾਜੁ ਕਰਸੀ॥

garbu garībī dēh khēh khāju akhāju akāju karasī॥

गरबु गरीबी देह खेह खाजु अखाजु अकाजु करसी॥

The body of both of the proud and the humble will become dust ultimately, but, even then the body of the arrogant (lion) is inedible and that of the humble (goat) attaims the status of edible.

ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ਸਭ ਕੋਇ ਮਰਸੀ ॥੧੭॥

jagi āiā sabh kōi marsī ॥17॥

जगि आइआ सभ कोइ मरसी ॥१७॥

All who came to this world have to die ultimately.
