Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਨ ਮੋੜੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਿਾਤਾ ਸਾਈ ॥
ratē sēī ji mukhu na mōṛann ijinī sātā sāī ॥
रते सेई जि मुखु न मोड़ंन् िजिन्ी सिाता साई ॥
They alone are imbued with the Lord, who do not turn their faces away from Him - they realize Him.
ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
jhaṛi jhaṛi pavdē kachē birhī jinā kāri na āī ॥1॥
झड़ि झड़ि पवदे कचे बिरही जिन्ा कारि न आई ॥१॥
The false, immature lovers do not know the way of love, and so they fall. ||1||
ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ ॥
dhaṇī vihūṇā pāṭ paṭmbar bhāhī sētī jālē ॥
धणी विहूणा पाट पटंबर भाही सेती जाले ॥
Without my Master, I will burn my silk and satin clothes in the fire.
ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
dhūṛī vichi luḍndaṛī sōhāṃ nānak tai sah nālē ॥2॥
धूड़ी विचि लुडंदड़ी सोहां नानक तै सह नाले ॥२॥
Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥
gur kai sabdi arādhīai nāmi raṅgi bairāgu ॥
गुर कै सबदि अराधीऐ नामि रंगि बैरागु ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment.
ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
jītē pañc bairāīā nānak saphal mārū ihu rāgu ॥3॥
जीते पंच बैराईआ नानक सफल मारू इहु रागु ॥३॥
When the five enemies are overcome, O Nanak, this musical measure of Raga Maaroo becomes frtuiful. ||3||
ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਤ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ॥
jāṃ mūṃ iku ta lakh tau jitī pinṇē dari kitaṛē ॥
जां मूं इकु त लख तउ जिती पिनणे दरि कितड़े ॥
When I have the One Lord, I have tens of thousands. Otherwise, people like me beg from door to door.
ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥
bāmṇu birthā gaiō janmmu jini kītō sō visarē ॥4॥
बामणु बिरथा गइओ जनंमु जिनि कीतो सो विसरे ॥४॥
O Brahmin, your life has passed away uselessly; you have forgotten the One who created you. ||4||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
sōrṭhi sō rasu pījīai kabahū na phīkā hōi ॥
सोरठि सो रसु पीजीऐ कबहू न फीका होइ ॥
In Raga Sorat'h, drink in this sublime essence, which never loses its taste.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
nānak rām nām gun gāīahi dargah nirmal sōi ॥5॥
नानक राम नाम गुन गाईअहि दरगह निरमल सोइ ॥५॥
O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, one's reputation is immaculate in the Court of the Lord. ||5||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰਈ ॥
jō prabhi rakhē āpi tin kōi na māraī ॥
जो प्रभि रखे आपि तिन कोइ न मारई ॥
No one can kill those whom God Himself protects.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
andri nāmu nidhānu sadā guṇ sāraī ॥
अंदरि नामु निधानु सदा गुण सारई ॥
The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them. They cherish His Glorious Virtues forever.
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ ॥
ēkā ṭēk agamm mani tani prabhu dhāraī ॥
एका टेक अगंम मनि तनि प्रभु धारई ॥
They take the Support of the One, the Inaccessible Lord; they enshrine God in their mind and body.
ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਉਤਾਰਈ ॥
lagā raṅgu apāru kō na utāraī ॥
लगा रंगु अपारु को न उतारई ॥
They are imbued with the Love of the Infinite Lord, and no one can wipe it away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
gurmukhi hari guṇ gāi sahji sukhu sāraī ॥
गुरमुखि हरि गुण गाइ सहजि सुखु सारई ॥
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they obtain the most excellent celestial peace and poise.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥
nānak nāmu nidhānu ridai uri hāraī ॥6॥
नानक नामु निधानु रिदै उरि हारई ॥६॥
O Nanak, they enshrine the treasure of the Naam in their hearts. ||6||
ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ ॥
karē su chaṅgā māni duyī gaṇat lāhi ॥
करे सु चंगा मानि दुयी गणत लाहि ॥
Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgements.
ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
apṇī nadri nihāli āpē laihu lāi ॥
अपणी नदरि निहालि आपे लैहु लाइ ॥
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
jan dēhu matī updēsu vichhu bharmu jāi ॥
जन देहु मती उपदेसु विचहु भरमु जाइ ॥
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jō dhuri likhiā lēkhu sōī sabh kamāi ॥
जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु सोई सभ कमाइ ॥
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabhu kachhu tis dai vasi dūjī nāhi jāi ॥
सभु कछु तिस दै वसि दूजी नाहि जाइ ॥
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
nānak sukh anad bhaē prabh kī manni rajāi ॥7॥
नानक सुख अनद भए प्रभ की मंनि रजाइ ॥७॥
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
guru pūrā jin simriā sēī bhaē nihāl ॥
गुरु पूरा जिन सिमरिआ सेई भए निहाल ॥
Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
nānak nāmu arādhṇā kārju āvai rāsi ॥8॥
नानक नामु अराधणा कारजु आवै रासि ॥८॥
O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8||
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥
pāpī karam kamāvdē karadē hāē hāi ॥
पापी करम कमावदे करदे हाए हाइ ॥
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
nānak jiu mathni mādhāṇīā tiu mathē dhram rāi ॥9॥
नानक जिउ मथनि माधाणीआ तिउ मथे ध्रम राइ ॥९॥
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥
nāmu dhiāini sājnā janam padārthu jīti ॥
नामु धिआइनि साजना जनम पदारथु जीति ॥
Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
nānak dharam aisē chavhi kītō bhavnu punīt ॥10॥
नानक धरम ऐसे चवहि कीतो भवनु पुनीत ॥१०॥
O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one's world becomes sanctified. ||10||
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥
khubhṛī kuthāi miṭhī galṇi kumntrīā ॥
खुभड़ी कुथाइ मिठी गलणि कुमंत्रीआ ॥
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
nānak sēī ubrē jinā bhāgu mathāhi ॥11॥
नानक सेई उबरे जिना भागु मथाहि ॥११॥
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥
sutaṛē sukhī savann ijō ratē sah āpṇai ॥
सुतड़े सुखी सवंन् िजो रते सह आपणै ॥
They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧੨॥
prēm vichhōhā dhaṇī sau aṭhē pahar lavann i॥12॥
प्रेम विछोहा धणी सउ अठे पहर लवंन् ि॥१२॥
Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥
sutaṛē asaṅkh māiā jhūṭhī kārṇē ॥
सुतड़े असंख माइआ झूठी कारणे ॥
Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨ੍ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
nānak sē jāgann iji rasnā nāmu uchārṇē ॥13॥
नानक से जागंन् िजि रसना नामु उचारणे ॥१३॥
O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥
mrig tisnā pēkhi bhulṇē vuṭhē nagar gandhrab ॥
म्रिग तिसना पेखि भुलणे वुठे नगर गंध्रब ॥
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
jinī sachu arādhiā nānak mani tani phab ॥14॥
जिनी सचु अराधिआ नानक मनि तनि फब ॥१४॥
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
patit udhāraṇ pārbrahmu sammrath purkhu apāru ॥
पतित उधारण पारब्रहमु संम्रथ पुरखु अपारु ॥
The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners.
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥
jishi udhārē nānkā sō simrē sirjaṇhāru ॥15॥
जिसहि उधारे नानका सो सिमरे सिरजणहारु ॥१५॥
Those whom He saves, meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord. ||15||
ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
dūjī chhōḍi kuvāṭṛī ikas sau chitu lāi ॥
दूजी छोडि कुवाटड़ी इकस सउ चितु लाइ ॥
Forsake duality and the ways of evil; focus your consciousness on the One Lord.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਹਣਿ ਲੁੜ੍ੰਦੜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
dūjai bhāvṃī nānkā vahṇi luṛndṛī jāi ॥16॥
दूजै भावंØी नानका वहणि लुड़्ंदड़ी जाइ ॥१६॥
In the love of duality, O Nanak, the mortals are being washed downstream. ||16||
ਤਿਹਟੜੇ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥
tihṭaṛē bājār saudā karni vaṇjāriā ॥
तिहटड़े बाजार सउदा करनि वणजारिआ ॥
In the markets and bazaars of the three qualities, the merchants make their deals.
ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੜੇ ਪਾਸਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
sachu vakhru jinī ladiā sē sacṛē pāsār ॥17॥
सचु वखरु जिनी लदिआ से सचड़े पासार ॥१७॥
Those who load the true merchandise are the true traders. ||17||
ਪੰਥਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਗਵਾਰਿ ॥
panthā prēm na jāṇaī bhūlī phirai gavāri ॥
पंथा प्रेम न जाणई भूली फिरै गवारि ॥
Those who do not know the way of love are foolish; they wander lost and confused.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਉਦੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਅੰਧ੍ਹਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
nānak hari bisrāi kai paudē narki andhhār ॥18॥
नानक हरि बिसराइ कै पउदे नरकि अंध्हार ॥१८॥
O Nanak, forgetting the Lord, they fall into the deep, dark pit of hell. ||18||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾਂ ਦੰਮ ॥
māiā manhu na vīsrai māṅgai dammāṃ damm ॥
माइआ मनहु न वीसरै मांगै दंमां दंम ॥
In his mind, the mortal does not forget Maya; he begs for more and more wealth.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮਿ ॥੧੯॥
sō prabhu chiti na āvaī nānak nahī karmmi ॥19॥
सो प्रभु चिति न आवई नानक नही करंमि ॥१९॥
That God does not even come into his consciousness; O Nanak, it is not in his karma. ||19||
ਤਿਚਰੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਥੁੜੀਦੋ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ॥
ticru mūli na thuṛṃīdō jicru āpi kripālu ॥
तिचरु मूलि न थुड़ंØीदो जिचरु आपि क्रिपालु ॥
The mortal does not run out of capital, as long as the Lord Himself is merciful.
ਸਬਦੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਖਰਚਿ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੨੦॥
sabdu akhuṭu bābā nānkā khāhi kharchi dhanu mālu ॥20॥
सबदु अखुटु बाबा नानका खाहि खरचि धनु मालु ॥२०॥
The Word of the Shabad is Guru Nanak's inexhaustible treasure; this wealth and capital never runs out, no matter how much it is spent and consumed. ||20||
ਖੰਭ ਵਿਕਾਂਦੜੇ ਜੇ ਲਹਾਂ ਘਿੰਨਾ ਸਾਵੀ ਤੋਲਿ ॥
khambh vikāndṛē jē lahāṃ ghinnā sāvī tōli ॥
खंभ विकांदड़े जे लहां घिंना सावी तोलि ॥
If I could find wings for sale, I would buy them with an equal weight of my flesh.
ਤੰਨਿ ਜੜਾਂਈ ਆਪਣੈ ਲਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਟੋਲਿ ॥੨੧॥
tanni jaṛāṃī āpṇai lahāṃ su sajṇu ṭōli ॥21॥
तंनि जड़ांई आपणै लहां सु सजणु टोलि ॥२१॥
I would attach them to my body, and seek out and find my Friend. ||21||
ਸਜਣੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੈ ਸਾਹੁ ॥
sajṇu sachā pātisāhu siri sāhāṃ dai sāhu ॥
सजणु सचा पातिसाहु सिरि साहां दै साहु ॥
My Friend is the True Supreme King, the King over the heads of kings.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆ ਸੋਹੀਐ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
jisu pāsi bahiṭhiā sōhīai sabhnāṃ dā vēsāhu ॥22॥
जिसु पासि बहिठिआ सोहीऐ सभनां दा वेसाहु ॥२२॥
Sitting by His side, we are exalted and beautified; He is the Support of all. ||22||

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥
gur kai sabdi arādhīai nāmi raṅgi bairāgu ॥
गुर कै सबदि अराधीऐ नामि रंगि बैरागु ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment.
ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
jītē pañc bairāīā nānak saphal mārū ihu rāgu ॥3॥
जीते पंच बैराईआ नानक सफल मारू इहु रागु ॥३॥
When the five enemies are overcome, O Nanak, this musical measure of Raga Maaroo becomes frtuiful. ||3||
ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਤ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ॥
jāṃ mūṃ iku ta lakh tau jitī pinṇē dari kitaṛē ॥
जां मूं इकु त लख तउ जिती पिनणे दरि कितड़े ॥
When I have the One Lord, I have tens of thousands. Otherwise, people like me beg from door to door.
ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥
bāmṇu birthā gaiō janmmu jini kītō sō visarē ॥4॥
बामणु बिरथा गइओ जनंमु जिनि कीतो सो विसरे ॥४॥
O Brahmin, your life has passed away uselessly; you have forgotten the One who created you. ||4||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
sōrṭhi sō rasu pījīai kabahū na phīkā hōi ॥
सोरठि सो रसु पीजीऐ कबहू न फीका होइ ॥
In Raga Sorat'h, drink in this sublime essence, which never loses its taste.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
nānak rām nām gun gāīahi dargah nirmal sōi ॥5॥
नानक राम नाम गुन गाईअहि दरगह निरमल सोइ ॥५॥
O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, one's reputation is immaculate in the Court of the Lord. ||5||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰਈ ॥
jō prabhi rakhē āpi tin kōi na māraī ॥
जो प्रभि रखे आपि तिन कोइ न मारई ॥
No one can kill those whom God Himself protects.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
andri nāmu nidhānu sadā guṇ sāraī ॥
अंदरि नामु निधानु सदा गुण सारई ॥
The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them. They cherish His Glorious Virtues forever.
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ ॥
ēkā ṭēk agamm mani tani prabhu dhāraī ॥
एका टेक अगंम मनि तनि प्रभु धारई ॥
They take the Support of the One, the Inaccessible Lord; they enshrine God in their mind and body.
ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਉਤਾਰਈ ॥
lagā raṅgu apāru kō na utāraī ॥
लगा रंगु अपारु को न उतारई ॥
They are imbued with the Love of the Infinite Lord, and no one can wipe it away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
gurmukhi hari guṇ gāi sahji sukhu sāraī ॥
गुरमुखि हरि गुण गाइ सहजि सुखु सारई ॥
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they obtain the most excellent celestial peace and poise.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥
nānak nāmu nidhānu ridai uri hāraī ॥6॥
नानक नामु निधानु रिदै उरि हारई ॥६॥
O Nanak, they enshrine the treasure of the Naam in their hearts. ||6||
ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ ॥
karē su chaṅgā māni duyī gaṇat lāhi ॥
करे सु चंगा मानि दुयी गणत लाहि ॥
Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgements.
ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
apṇī nadri nihāli āpē laihu lāi ॥
अपणी नदरि निहालि आपे लैहु लाइ ॥
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
jan dēhu matī updēsu vichhu bharmu jāi ॥
जन देहु मती उपदेसु विचहु भरमु जाइ ॥
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jō dhuri likhiā lēkhu sōī sabh kamāi ॥
जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु सोई सभ कमाइ ॥
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabhu kachhu tis dai vasi dūjī nāhi jāi ॥
सभु कछु तिस दै वसि दूजी नाहि जाइ ॥
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
nānak sukh anad bhaē prabh kī manni rajāi ॥7॥
नानक सुख अनद भए प्रभ की मंनि रजाइ ॥७॥
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
guru pūrā jin simriā sēī bhaē nihāl ॥
गुरु पूरा जिन सिमरिआ सेई भए निहाल ॥
Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
nānak nāmu arādhṇā kārju āvai rāsi ॥8॥
नानक नामु अराधणा कारजु आवै रासि ॥८॥
O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8||
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥
pāpī karam kamāvdē karadē hāē hāi ॥
पापी करम कमावदे करदे हाए हाइ ॥
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
nānak jiu mathni mādhāṇīā tiu mathē dhram rāi ॥9॥
नानक जिउ मथनि माधाणीआ तिउ मथे ध्रम राइ ॥९॥
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥
nāmu dhiāini sājnā janam padārthu jīti ॥
नामु धिआइनि साजना जनम पदारथु जीति ॥
Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
nānak dharam aisē chavhi kītō bhavnu punīt ॥10॥
नानक धरम ऐसे चवहि कीतो भवनु पुनीत ॥१०॥
O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one's world becomes sanctified. ||10||
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥
khubhṛī kuthāi miṭhī galṇi kumntrīā ॥
खुभड़ी कुथाइ मिठी गलणि कुमंत्रीआ ॥
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
nānak sēī ubrē jinā bhāgu mathāhi ॥11॥
नानक सेई उबरे जिना भागु मथाहि ॥११॥
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥
sutaṛē sukhī savann ijō ratē sah āpṇai ॥
सुतड़े सुखी सवंन् िजो रते सह आपणै ॥
They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧੨॥
prēm vichhōhā dhaṇī sau aṭhē pahar lavann i॥12॥
प्रेम विछोहा धणी सउ अठे पहर लवंन् ि॥१२॥
Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥
sutaṛē asaṅkh māiā jhūṭhī kārṇē ॥
सुतड़े असंख माइआ झूठी कारणे ॥
Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
nānak sē jāgann iji rasnā nāmu uchārṇē ॥13॥
नानक से जागंन् िजि रसना नामु उचारणे ॥१३॥
O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥
mrig tisnā pēkhi bhulṇē vuṭhē nagar gandhrab ॥
म्रिग तिसना पेखि भुलणे वुठे नगर गंध्रब ॥
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
jinī sachu arādhiā nānak mani tani phab ॥14॥
जिनी सचु अराधिआ नानक मनि तनि फब ॥१४॥
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
patit udhāraṇ pārbrahmu sammrath purkhu apāru ॥
पतित उधारण पारब्रहमु संम्रथ पुरखु अपारु ॥
The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners.
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥
jishi udhārē nānkā sō simrē sirjaṇhāru ॥15॥
जिसहि उधारे नानका सो सिमरे सिरजणहारु ॥१५॥
Those whom He saves, meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord. ||15||
ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
dūjī chhōḍi kuvāṭṛī ikas sau chitu lāi ॥
दूजी छोडि कुवाटड़ी इकस सउ चितु लाइ ॥
Forsake duality and the ways of evil; focus your consciousness on the One Lord.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਹਣਿ ਲੁੜ੍ੰਦੜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
dūjai bhāvṃī nānkā vahṇi luṛndṛī jāi ॥16॥
दूजै भावंØी नानका वहणि लुड़्ंदड़ी जाइ ॥१६॥
In the love of duality, O Nanak, the mortals are being washed downstream. ||16||
ਤਿਹਟੜੇ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥
tihṭaṛē bājār saudā karni vaṇjāriā ॥
तिहटड़े बाजार सउदा करनि वणजारिआ ॥
In the markets and bazaars of the three qualities, the merchants make their deals.
ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੜੇ ਪਾਸਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
sachu vakhru jinī ladiā sē sacṛē pāsār ॥17॥
सचु वखरु जिनी लदिआ से सचड़े पासार ॥१७॥
Those who load the true merchandise are the true traders. ||17||
ਪੰਥਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਗਵਾਰਿ ॥
panthā prēm na jāṇaī bhūlī phirai gavāri ॥
पंथा प्रेम न जाणई भूली फिरै गवारि ॥
Those who do not know the way of love are foolish; they wander lost and confused.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਉਦੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਅੰਧ੍ਹਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
nānak hari bisrāi kai paudē narki andhhār ॥18॥
नानक हरि बिसराइ कै पउदे नरकि अंध्हार ॥१८॥
O Nanak, forgetting the Lord, they fall into the deep, dark pit of hell. ||18||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾਂ ਦੰਮ ॥
māiā manhu na vīsrai māṅgai dammāṃ damm ॥
माइआ मनहु न वीसरै मांगै दंमां दंम ॥
In his mind, the mortal does not forget Maya; he begs for more and more wealth.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮਿ ॥੧੯॥
sō prabhu chiti na āvaī nānak nahī karmmi ॥19॥
सो प्रभु चिति न आवई नानक नही करंमि ॥१९॥
That God does not even come into his consciousness; O Nanak, it is not in his karma. ||19||
ਤਿਚਰੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਥੁੜੀਦੋ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ॥
ticru mūli na thuṛṃīdō jicru āpi kripālu ॥
तिचरु मूलि न थुड़ंØीदो जिचरु आपि क्रिपालु ॥
The mortal does not run out of capital, as long as the Lord Himself is merciful.
ਸਬਦੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਖਰਚਿ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੨੦॥
sabdu akhuṭu bābā nānkā khāhi kharchi dhanu mālu ॥20॥
सबदु अखुटु बाबा नानका खाहि खरचि धनु मालु ॥२०॥
The Word of the Shabad is Guru Nanak's inexhaustible treasure; this wealth and capital never runs out, no matter how much it is spent and consumed. ||20||
ਖੰਭ ਵਿਕਾਂਦੜੇ ਜੇ ਲਹਾਂ ਘਿੰਨਾ ਸਾਵੀ ਤੋਲਿ ॥
khambh vikāndṛē jē lahāṃ ghinnā sāvī tōli ॥
खंभ विकांदड़े जे लहां घिंना सावी तोलि ॥
If I could find wings for sale, I would buy them with an equal weight of my flesh.
ਤੰਨਿ ਜੜਾਂਈ ਆਪਣੈ ਲਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਟੋਲਿ ॥੨੧॥
tanni jaṛāṃī āpṇai lahāṃ su sajṇu ṭōli ॥21॥
तंनि जड़ांई आपणै लहां सु सजणु टोलि ॥२१॥
I would attach them to my body, and seek out and find my Friend. ||21||
ਸਜਣੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੈ ਸਾਹੁ ॥
sajṇu sachā pātisāhu siri sāhāṃ dai sāhu ॥
सजणु सचा पातिसाहु सिरि साहां दै साहु ॥
My Friend is the True Supreme King, the King over the heads of kings.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆ ਸੋਹੀਐ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
jisu pāsi bahiṭhiā sōhīai sabhnāṃ dā vēsāhu ॥22॥
जिसु पासि बहिठिआ सोहीऐ सभनां दा वेसाहु ॥२२॥
Sitting by His side, we are exalted and beautified; He is the Support of all. ||22||

ratē sēī ji mukhu na mōṛann ijinī sātā sāī ॥
रते सेई जि मुखु न मोड़ंन् िजिन्ी सिाता साई ॥
They alone are imbued with the Lord, who do not turn their faces away from Him - they realize Him.
ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
jhaṛi jhaṛi pavdē kachē birhī jinā kāri na āī ॥1॥
झड़ि झड़ि पवदे कचे बिरही जिन्ा कारि न आई ॥१॥
The false, immature lovers do not know the way of love, and so they fall. ||1||
ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ ॥
dhaṇī vihūṇā pāṭ paṭmbar bhāhī sētī jālē ॥
धणी विहूणा पाट पटंबर भाही सेती जाले ॥
Without my Master, I will burn my silk and satin clothes in the fire.
ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥

धूड़ी विचि लुडंदड़ी सोहां नानक तै सह नाले ॥२॥
Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2||

O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, one's reputation is immaculate in the Court of the Lord. ||5||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰਈ ॥
jō prabhi rakhē āpi tin kōi na māraī ॥
जो प्रभि रखे आपि तिन कोइ न मारई ॥
No one can kill those whom God Himself protects.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
andri nāmu nidhānu sadā guṇ sāraī ॥
अंदरि नामु निधानु सदा गुण सारई ॥
The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them. They cherish His Glorious Virtues forever.
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ ॥
ēkā ṭēk agamm mani tani prabhu dhāraī ॥
एका टेक अगंम मनि तनि प्रभु धारई ॥
They take the Support of the One, the Inaccessible Lord; they enshrine God in their mind and body.
ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਉਤਾਰਈ ॥
lagā raṅgu apāru kō na utāraī ॥
लगा रंगु अपारु को न उतारई ॥
They are imbued with the Love of the Infinite Lord, and no one can wipe it away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
gurmukhi hari guṇ gāi sahji sukhu sāraī ॥
गुरमुखि हरि गुण गाइ सहजि सुखु सारई ॥
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they obtain the most excellent celestial peace and poise.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥
nānak nāmu nidhānu ridai uri hāraī ॥6॥
नानक नामु निधानु रिदै उरि हारई ॥६॥
O Nanak, they enshrine the treasure of the Naam in their hearts. ||6||
ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ ॥
karē su chaṅgā māni duyī gaṇat lāhi ॥
करे सु चंगा मानि दुयी गणत लाहि ॥
Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgements.
ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
apṇī nadri nihāli āpē laihu lāi ॥
अपणी नदरि निहालि आपे लैहु लाइ ॥
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
jan dēhu matī updēsu vichhu bharmu jāi ॥
जन देहु मती उपदेसु विचहु भरमु जाइ ॥
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jō dhuri likhiā lēkhu sōī sabh kamāi ॥
जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु सोई सभ कमाइ ॥
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabhu kachhu tis dai vasi dūjī nāhi jāi ॥
सभु कछु तिस दै वसि दूजी नाहि जाइ ॥
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
nānak sukh anad bhaē prabh kī manni rajāi ॥7॥
नानक सुख अनद भए प्रभ की मंनि रजाइ ॥७॥
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
guru pūrā jin simriā sēī bhaē nihāl ॥
गुरु पूरा जिन सिमरिआ सेई भए निहाल ॥
Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
nānak nāmu arādhṇā kārju āvai rāsi ॥8॥
नानक नामु अराधणा कारजु आवै रासि ॥८॥
O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8||
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥
pāpī karam kamāvdē karadē hāē hāi ॥
पापी करम कमावदे करदे हाए हाइ ॥
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
nānak jiu mathni mādhāṇīā tiu mathē dhram rāi ॥9॥
नानक जिउ मथनि माधाणीआ तिउ मथे ध्रम राइ ॥९॥
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥
nāmu dhiāini sājnā janam padārthu jīti ॥
नामु धिआइनि साजना जनम पदारथु जीति ॥
Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
nānak dharam aisē chavhi kītō bhavnu punīt ॥10॥
नानक धरम ऐसे चवहि कीतो भवनु पुनीत ॥१०॥
O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one's world becomes sanctified. ||10||
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥
khubhṛī kuthāi miṭhī galṇi kumntrīā ॥
खुभड़ी कुथाइ मिठी गलणि कुमंत्रीआ ॥
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
nānak sēī ubrē jinā bhāgu mathāhi ॥11॥
नानक सेई उबरे जिना भागु मथाहि ॥११॥
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥
sutaṛē sukhī savann ijō ratē sah āpṇai ॥
सुतड़े सुखी सवंन् िजो रते सह आपणै ॥
They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧੨॥
prēm vichhōhā dhaṇī sau aṭhē pahar lavann i॥12॥
प्रेम विछोहा धणी सउ अठे पहर लवंन् ि॥१२॥
Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥
sutaṛē asaṅkh māiā jhūṭhī kārṇē ॥
सुतड़े असंख माइआ झूठी कारणे ॥
Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
nānak sē jāgann iji rasnā nāmu uchārṇē ॥13॥
नानक से जागंन् िजि रसना नामु उचारणे ॥१३॥
O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥
mrig tisnā pēkhi bhulṇē vuṭhē nagar gandhrab ॥
म्रिग तिसना पेखि भुलणे वुठे नगर गंध्रब ॥
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
jinī sachu arādhiā nānak mani tani phab ॥14॥
जिनी सचु अराधिआ नानक मनि तनि फब ॥१४॥
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
patit udhāraṇ pārbrahmu sammrath purkhu apāru ॥
पतित उधारण पारब्रहमु संम्रथ पुरखु अपारु ॥
The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners.
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥
jishi udhārē nānkā sō simrē sirjaṇhāru ॥15॥
जिसहि उधारे नानका सो सिमरे सिरजणहारु ॥१५॥
Those whom He saves, meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord. ||15||
ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
dūjī chhōḍi kuvāṭṛī ikas sau chitu lāi ॥
दूजी छोडि कुवाटड़ी इकस सउ चितु लाइ ॥
Forsake duality and the ways of evil; focus your consciousness on the One Lord.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਹਣਿ ਲੁੜ੍ੰਦੜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
dūjai bhāvṃī nānkā vahṇi luṛndṛī jāi ॥16॥
दूजै भावंØी नानका वहणि लुड़्ंदड़ी जाइ ॥१६॥
In the love of duality, O Nanak, the mortals are being washed downstream. ||16||
ਤਿਹਟੜੇ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥
tihṭaṛē bājār saudā karni vaṇjāriā ॥
तिहटड़े बाजार सउदा करनि वणजारिआ ॥
In the markets and bazaars of the three qualities, the merchants make their deals.
ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੜੇ ਪਾਸਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
sachu vakhru jinī ladiā sē sacṛē pāsār ॥17॥
सचु वखरु जिनी लदिआ से सचड़े पासार ॥१७॥
Those who load the true merchandise are the true traders. ||17||
ਪੰਥਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਗਵਾਰਿ ॥
panthā prēm na jāṇaī bhūlī phirai gavāri ॥
पंथा प्रेम न जाणई भूली फिरै गवारि ॥
Those who do not know the way of love are foolish; they wander lost and confused.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਉਦੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਅੰਧ੍ਹਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
nānak hari bisrāi kai paudē narki andhhār ॥18॥
नानक हरि बिसराइ कै पउदे नरकि अंध्हार ॥१८॥
O Nanak, forgetting the Lord, they fall into the deep, dark pit of hell. ||18||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾਂ ਦੰਮ ॥
māiā manhu na vīsrai māṅgai dammāṃ damm ॥
माइआ मनहु न वीसरै मांगै दंमां दंम ॥
In his mind, the mortal does not forget Maya; he begs for more and more wealth.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮਿ ॥੧੯॥
sō prabhu chiti na āvaī nānak nahī karmmi ॥19॥
सो प्रभु चिति न आवई नानक नही करंमि ॥१९॥
That God does not even come into his consciousness; O Nanak, it is not in his karma. ||19||
ਤਿਚਰੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਥੁੜੀਦੋ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ॥
ticru mūli na thuṛṃīdō jicru āpi kripālu ॥
तिचरु मूलि न थुड़ंØीदो जिचरु आपि क्रिपालु ॥
The mortal does not run out of capital, as long as the Lord Himself is merciful.
ਸਬਦੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਖਰਚਿ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੨੦॥
sabdu akhuṭu bābā nānkā khāhi kharchi dhanu mālu ॥20॥
सबदु अखुटु बाबा नानका खाहि खरचि धनु मालु ॥२०॥
The Word of the Shabad is Guru Nanak's inexhaustible treasure; this wealth and capital never runs out, no matter how much it is spent and consumed. ||20||
ਖੰਭ ਵਿਕਾਂਦੜੇ ਜੇ ਲਹਾਂ ਘਿੰਨਾ ਸਾਵੀ ਤੋਲਿ ॥
khambh vikāndṛē jē lahāṃ ghinnā sāvī tōli ॥
खंभ विकांदड़े जे लहां घिंना सावी तोलि ॥
If I could find wings for sale, I would buy them with an equal weight of my flesh.
ਤੰਨਿ ਜੜਾਂਈ ਆਪਣੈ ਲਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਟੋਲਿ ॥੨੧॥
tanni jaṛāṃī āpṇai lahāṃ su sajṇu ṭōli ॥21॥
तंनि जड़ांई आपणै लहां सु सजणु टोलि ॥२१॥
I would attach them to my body, and seek out and find my Friend. ||21||
ਸਜਣੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੈ ਸਾਹੁ ॥
sajṇu sachā pātisāhu siri sāhāṃ dai sāhu ॥
सजणु सचा पातिसाहु सिरि साहां दै साहु ॥
My Friend is the True Supreme King, the King over the heads of kings.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆ ਸੋਹੀਐ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
jisu pāsi bahiṭhiā sōhīai sabhnāṃ dā vēsāhu ॥22॥

Sitting by His side, we are exalted and beautified; He is the Support of all. ||22||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਨ ਮੋੜੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਿਾਤਾ ਸਾਈ ॥
ratē sēī ji mukhu na mōṛann ijinī sātā sāī ॥
रते सेई जि मुखु न मोड़ंन् िजिन्ी सिाता साई ॥
They alone are imbued with the Lord, who do not turn their faces away from Him - they realize Him.
ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
jhaṛi jhaṛi pavdē kachē birhī jinā kāri na āī ॥1॥
झड़ि झड़ि पवदे कचे बिरही जिन्ा कारि न आई ॥१॥
The false, immature lovers do not know the way of love, and so they fall. ||1||
ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ ॥
dhaṇī vihūṇā pāṭ paṭmbar bhāhī sētī jālē ॥
धणी विहूणा पाट पटंबर भाही सेती जाले ॥
Without my Master, I will burn my silk and satin clothes in the fire.
ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
dhūṛī vichi luḍndaṛī sōhāṃ nānak tai sah nālē ॥2॥
धूड़ी विचि लुडंदड़ी सोहां नानक तै सह नाले ॥२॥
Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥
gur kai sabdi arādhīai nāmi raṅgi bairāgu ॥
गुर कै सबदि अराधीऐ नामि रंगि बैरागु ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment.
ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
jītē pañc bairāīā nānak saphal mārū ihu rāgu ॥3॥
जीते पंच बैराईआ नानक सफल मारू इहु रागु ॥३॥
When the five enemies are overcome, O Nanak, this musical measure of Raga Maaroo becomes frtuiful. ||3||
ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਤ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ॥
jāṃ mūṃ iku ta lakh tau jitī pinṇē dari kitaṛē ॥
जां मूं इकु त लख तउ जिती पिनणे दरि कितड़े ॥
When I have the One Lord, I have tens of thousands. Otherwise, people like me beg from door to door.
ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥
bāmṇu birthā gaiō janmmu jini kītō sō visarē ॥4॥
बामणु बिरथा गइओ जनंमु जिनि कीतो सो विसरे ॥४॥
O Brahmin, your life has passed away uselessly; you have forgotten the One who created you. ||4||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
sōrṭhi sō rasu pījīai kabahū na phīkā hōi ॥
सोरठि सो रसु पीजीऐ कबहू न फीका होइ ॥
In Raga Sorat'h, drink in this sublime essence, which never loses its taste.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
nānak rām nām gun gāīahi dargah nirmal sōi ॥5॥
नानक राम नाम गुन गाईअहि दरगह निरमल सोइ ॥५॥

ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
apṇī nadri nihāli āpē laihu lāi ॥
अपणी नदरि निहालि आपे लैहु लाइ ॥
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
jan dēhu matī updēsu vichhu bharmu jāi ॥
जन देहु मती उपदेसु विचहु भरमु जाइ ॥
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jō dhuri likhiā lēkhu sōī sabh kamāi ॥
जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु सोई सभ कमाइ ॥
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabhu kachhu tis dai vasi dūjī nāhi jāi ॥
सभु कछु तिस दै वसि दूजी नाहि जाइ ॥
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
nānak sukh anad bhaē prabh kī manni rajāi ॥7॥
नानक सुख अनद भए प्रभ की मंनि रजाइ ॥७॥
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
guru pūrā jin simriā sēī bhaē nihāl ॥
गुरु पूरा जिन सिमरिआ सेई भए निहाल ॥
Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
nānak nāmu arādhṇā kārju āvai rāsi ॥8॥
नानक नामु अराधणा कारजु आवै रासि ॥८॥
O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8||
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥
pāpī karam kamāvdē karadē hāē hāi ॥
पापी करम कमावदे करदे हाए हाइ ॥
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
nānak jiu mathni mādhāṇīā tiu mathē dhram rāi ॥9॥
नानक जिउ मथनि माधाणीआ तिउ मथे ध्रम राइ ॥९॥
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥
nāmu dhiāini sājnā janam padārthu jīti ॥
नामु धिआइनि साजना जनम पदारथु जीति ॥
Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
nānak dharam aisē chavhi kītō bhavnu punīt ॥10॥
नानक धरम ऐसे चवहि कीतो भवनु पुनीत ॥१०॥
O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one's world becomes sanctified. ||10||
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥
khubhṛī kuthāi miṭhī galṇi kumntrīā ॥
खुभड़ी कुथाइ मिठी गलणि कुमंत्रीआ ॥
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
nānak sēī ubrē jinā bhāgu mathāhi ॥11॥
नानक सेई उबरे जिना भागु मथाहि ॥११॥
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥
sutaṛē sukhī savann ijō ratē sah āpṇai ॥
सुतड़े सुखी सवंन् िजो रते सह आपणै ॥
They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧੨॥
prēm vichhōhā dhaṇī sau aṭhē pahar lavann i॥12॥
प्रेम विछोहा धणी सउ अठे पहर लवंन् ि॥१२॥
Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥
sutaṛē asaṅkh māiā jhūṭhī kārṇē ॥
सुतड़े असंख माइआ झूठी कारणे ॥
Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
nānak sē jāgann iji rasnā nāmu uchārṇē ॥13॥
नानक से जागंन् िजि रसना नामु उचारणे ॥१३॥
O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥
mrig tisnā pēkhi bhulṇē vuṭhē nagar gandhrab ॥
म्रिग तिसना पेखि भुलणे वुठे नगर गंध्रब ॥
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
jinī sachu arādhiā nānak mani tani phab ॥14॥
जिनी सचु अराधिआ नानक मनि तनि फब ॥१४॥
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
patit udhāraṇ pārbrahmu sammrath purkhu apāru ॥
पतित उधारण पारब्रहमु संम्रथ पुरखु अपारु ॥
The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners.
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥
jishi udhārē nānkā sō simrē sirjaṇhāru ॥15॥
जिसहि उधारे नानका सो सिमरे सिरजणहारु ॥१५॥
Those whom He saves, meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord. ||15||
ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
dūjī chhōḍi kuvāṭṛī ikas sau chitu lāi ॥
दूजी छोडि कुवाटड़ी इकस सउ चितु लाइ ॥
Forsake duality and the ways of evil; focus your consciousness on the One Lord.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਹਣਿ ਲੁੜ੍ੰਦੜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੬॥
dūjai bhāvṃī nānkā vahṇi luṛndṛī jāi ॥16॥
दूजै भावंØी नानका वहणि लुड़्ंदड़ी जाइ ॥१६॥
In the love of duality, O Nanak, the mortals are being washed downstream. ||16||
ਤਿਹਟੜੇ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥
tihṭaṛē bājār saudā karni vaṇjāriā ॥
तिहटड़े बाजार सउदा करनि वणजारिआ ॥
In the markets and bazaars of the three qualities, the merchants make their deals.
ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੜੇ ਪਾਸਾਰ ॥੧੭॥
sachu vakhru jinī ladiā sē sacṛē pāsār ॥17॥
सचु वखरु जिनी लदिआ से सचड़े पासार ॥१७॥
Those who load the true merchandise are the true traders. ||17||
ਪੰਥਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਗਵਾਰਿ ॥
panthā prēm na jāṇaī bhūlī phirai gavāri ॥
पंथा प्रेम न जाणई भूली फिरै गवारि ॥
Those who do not know the way of love are foolish; they wander lost and confused.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਉਦੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਅੰਧ੍ਹਾਰ ॥੧੮॥
nānak hari bisrāi kai paudē narki andhhār ॥18॥
नानक हरि बिसराइ कै पउदे नरकि अंध्हार ॥१८॥
O Nanak, forgetting the Lord, they fall into the deep, dark pit of hell. ||18||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾਂ ਦੰਮ ॥
māiā manhu na vīsrai māṅgai dammāṃ damm ॥
माइआ मनहु न वीसरै मांगै दंमां दंम ॥
In his mind, the mortal does not forget Maya; he begs for more and more wealth.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮਿ ॥੧੯॥
sō prabhu chiti na āvaī nānak nahī karmmi ॥19॥
सो प्रभु चिति न आवई नानक नही करंमि ॥१९॥
That God does not even come into his consciousness; O Nanak, it is not in his karma. ||19||
ਤਿਚਰੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਥੁੜੀਦੋ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ॥
ticru mūli na thuṛṃīdō jicru āpi kripālu ॥
तिचरु मूलि न थुड़ंØीदो जिचरु आपि क्रिपालु ॥
The mortal does not run out of capital, as long as the Lord Himself is merciful.
ਸਬਦੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਖਰਚਿ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੨੦॥
sabdu akhuṭu bābā nānkā khāhi kharchi dhanu mālu ॥20॥
सबदु अखुटु बाबा नानका खाहि खरचि धनु मालु ॥२०॥
The Word of the Shabad is Guru Nanak's inexhaustible treasure; this wealth and capital never runs out, no matter how much it is spent and consumed. ||20||
ਖੰਭ ਵਿਕਾਂਦੜੇ ਜੇ ਲਹਾਂ ਘਿੰਨਾ ਸਾਵੀ ਤੋਲਿ ॥
khambh vikāndṛē jē lahāṃ ghinnā sāvī tōli ॥
खंभ विकांदड़े जे लहां घिंना सावी तोलि ॥
If I could find wings for sale, I would buy them with an equal weight of my flesh.
ਤੰਨਿ ਜੜਾਂਈ ਆਪਣੈ ਲਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਟੋਲਿ ॥੨੧॥
tanni jaṛāṃī āpṇai lahāṃ su sajṇu ṭōli ॥21॥
तंनि जड़ांई आपणै लहां सु सजणु टोलि ॥२१॥
I would attach them to my body, and seek out and find my Friend. ||21||
ਸਜਣੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੈ ਸਾਹੁ ॥
sajṇu sachā pātisāhu siri sāhāṃ dai sāhu ॥
सजणु सचा पातिसाहु सिरि साहां दै साहु ॥
My Friend is the True Supreme King, the King over the heads of kings.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆ ਸੋਹੀਐ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
jisu pāsi bahiṭhiā sōhīai sabhnāṃ dā vēsāhu ॥22॥
जिसु पासि बहिठिआ सोहीऐ सभनां दा वेसाहु ॥२२॥
Sitting by His side, we are exalted and beautified; He is the Support of all. ||22||
