ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਗਰਭ ਮਾਤਾ ਕੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਊਹਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

prathmē garabh mātā kai vāsā ūhā chhōḍi dharni mahi āiā ॥

प्रथमे गरभ माता कै वासा ऊहा छोडि धरनि महि आइआ ॥

First, he came to dwell in his mother's womb; leaving it, he came into the world.

ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਲ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਛਹੂ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

chitr sāl sundar bāg mandar saṅgi na kachhahū jāiā ॥1॥

चित्र साल सुंदर बाग मंदर संगि न कछहू जाइआ ॥१॥

Splendid mansions, beautiful gardens and palaces - none of these shall go with him. ||1||

ਅਵਰ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭ ਲਬੀ ॥

avar sabh mithiā lōbh labī ॥

अवर सभ मिथिआ लोभ लबी ॥

All other greeds of the greedy are false.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜੀਅ ਕਉ ਏਹਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਫਬੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

guri pūrai dīō hari nāmā jīa kau ēhā vastu phabī ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

गुरि पूरै दीओ हरि नामा जीअ कउ एहा वसतु फबी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

The Perfect Guru has given me the Name of the Lord, which my soul has come to treasure. ||1||Pause||

ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਰਚਿ ਹਸਿਆ ॥

isaṭ mīt bandhap sut bhāī saṅgi banitā rachi hasiā ॥

इसट मीत बंधप सुत भाई संगि बनिता रचि हसिआ ॥

Surrounded by dear friends, relatives, children, siblings and spouse, he laughs playfully.

ਜਬ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍‍ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥੨॥

jab antī ausru āi baniō hai un‍ pēkhat hī kāli grasiā ॥2॥

जब अंती अउसरु आइ बनिओ है उन्‍ पेखत ही कालि ग्रसिआ ॥२॥

But when the very last moment arrives, Death seizes him, while they merely look on. ||2||

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਰਥ ਬਿਹਾਝੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਦਾਮਾ ॥

kari kari anrath bihājhī sampai suinā rūpā dāmā ॥

करि करि अनरथ बिहाझी संपै सुइना रूपा दामा ॥

By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money,

ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥

bhāṛī kau ōhu bhāṛā miliā hōru sagal bhaiō birānā ॥3॥

भाड़ी कउ ओहु भाड़ा मिलिआ होरु सगल भइओ बिराना ॥३॥

But the load-bearer gets only paltry wages, while the rest of the money passes on to others. ||3||

ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

haivar gaivar rath sambāhē gahu kari kīnē mērē ॥

हैवर गैवर रथ संबाहे गहु करि कीने मेरे ॥

He grabs and collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own.

ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥

jab tē hōī lāmmī dhāī chalhi nāhī ik pairē ॥4॥

जब ते होई लांमी धाई चलहि नाही इक पैरे ॥४॥

But when he sets out on the long journey, they will not go even one step with him. ||4||

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਾਈ ॥

nāmu dhanu nāmu sukh rājā nāmu kuṭamb sahāī ॥

नामु धनु नामु सुख राजा नामु कुटंब सहाई ॥

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my wealth; the Naam is my princely pleasure; the Naam is my family and helper.

ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਈ ਓਹ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥

nāmu sampti guri nānak kau dīī ōh marai na āvai jāī ॥5॥1॥8॥

नामु संपति गुरि नानक कउ दीई ओह मरै न आवै जाई ॥५॥१॥८॥

The Guru has given Nanak the wealth of the Naam; it neither perishes, nor comes or goes. ||5||1||8||
