ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਧਰਿ ਪਾਇਤਾ ਉਦਰੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

Sriraag, Fifth Mehl:

ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਧਰਿ ਪਾਇਤਾ ਉਦਰੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

pahilai pahrai raiṇi kai vaṇjāriā mitrā dhari pāitā udrai māhi ॥

पहिलै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा धरि पाइता उदरै माहि ॥

In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Lord placed your soul in the womb.

ਦਸੀ ਮਾਸੀ ਮਾਨਸੁ ਕੀਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

dasī māsī mānsu kīā vaṇjāriā mitrā kari muhlati karam kamāhi ॥

दसी मासी मानसु कीआ वणजारिआ मित्रा करि मुहलति करम कमाहि ॥

In the tenth month, you were made into a human being, O my merchant friend, and you were given your allotted time to perform good deeds.

ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

muhlati kari dīnī karam kamāṇē jaisā likhtu dhuri pāiā ॥

मुहलति करि दीनी करम कमाणे जैसा लिखतु धुरि पाइआ ॥

You were given this time to perform good deeds, according to your pre-ordained destiny.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਤਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੰਜੋਇਆ ॥

māt pitā bhāī sut banitā tin bhītri prabhū sañjōiā ॥

मात पिता भाई सुत बनिता तिन भीतरि प्रभू संजोइआ ॥

God placed you with your mother, father, brothers, sons and wife.

ਕਰਮ ਸੁਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਇਸੁ ਜੰਤੈ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

karam sukaram karāē āpē isu jantai vasi kichhu nāhi ॥

करम सुकरम कराए आपे इसु जंतै वसि किछु नाहि ॥

God Himself is the Cause of causes, good and bad-no one has control over these things.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਧਰਿ ਪਾਇਤਾ ਉਦਰੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

kahu nānak prāṇī pahilai pahrai dhari pāitā udrai māhi ॥1॥

कहु नानक प्राणी पहिलै पहरै धरि पाइता उदरै माहि ॥१॥

Says Nanak, O mortal, in the first watch of the night, the soul is placed in the womb. ||1||

ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਭਰਿ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਲਹਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥

dūjai pahrai raiṇi kai vaṇjāriā mitrā bhari juānī lahrī dēi ॥

दूजै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा भरि जुआनी लहरी देइ ॥

In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the fullness of youth rises in you like waves.

ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਾ ਅਹੰਮੇਇ ॥

burā bhalā na pachhāṇī vaṇjāriā mitrā manu matā ahmmēi ॥

बुरा भला न पछाणई वणजारिआ मित्रा मनु मता अहंमेइ ॥

You do not distinguish between good and evil, O my merchant friend-your mind is intoxicated with ego.

ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਗੈ ਪੰਥੁ ਕਰਾਰਾ ॥

burā bhalā na pachhāṇai prāṇī āgai panthu karārā ॥

बुरा भला न पछाणै प्राणी आगै पंथु करारा ॥

Mortal beings do not distinguish between good and evil, and the road ahead is treacherous.

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰਾ ॥

pūrā satiguru kabahūṃ na sēviā siri ṭhāḍhē jam jandārā ॥

पूरा सतिगुरु कबहूं न सेविआ सिरि ठाढे जम जंदारा ॥

They never serve the Perfect True Guru, and the cruel tyrant Death stands over their heads.

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਜਬ ਪਕਰਸਿ ਬਵਰੇ ਤਬ ਕਿਆ ਜਬਾਬੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

dharam rāi jab pakrasi bavrē tab kiā jabābu karēi ॥

धरम राइ जब पकरसि बवरे तब किआ जबाबु करेइ ॥

When the Righteous Judge seizes you and interrogates you, O madman, what answer will you give him then?

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਲਹਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥੨॥

kahu nānak dūjai pahrai prāṇī bhari jōbnu lahrī dēi ॥2॥

कहु नानक दूजै पहरै प्राणी भरि जोबनु लहरी देइ ॥२॥

Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, O mortal, the fullness of youth tosses you about like waves in the storm. ||2||

ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

tījai pahrai raiṇi kai vaṇjāriā mitrā bikhu sañchai andhu agiānu ॥

तीजै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा बिखु संचै अंधु अगिआनु ॥

In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison.

ਪੁਤ੍ਰਿ ਕਲਤ੍ਰਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਲਪਟਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਲੋਭਾਨੁ ॥

putri kaltri mōhi lapṭiā vaṇjāriā mitrā antri lahri lōbhānu ॥

पुत्रि कलत्रि मोहि लपटिआ वणजारिआ मित्रा अंतरि लहरि लोभानु ॥

He is entangled in emotional attachment to his wife and sons, O my merchant friend, and deep within him, the waves of greed are rising up.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਲੋਭਾਨੁ ਪਰਾਨੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

antri lahri lōbhānu parānī sō prabhu chiti na āvai ॥

अंतरि लहरि लोभानु परानी सो प्रभु चिति न आवै ॥

The waves of greed are rising up within him, and he does not remember God.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਆ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

sādhsaṅgti siu saṅgu na kīā bahu jōnī dukhu pāvai ॥

साधसंगति सिउ संगु न कीआ बहु जोनी दुखु पावै ॥

He does not join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and he suffers in terrible pain through countless incarnations.

ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

sirjanhāru visāriā suāmī ik nimakh na lagō dhiānu ॥

सिरजनहारु विसारिआ सुआमी इक निमख न लगो धिआनु ॥

He has forgotten the Creator, his Lord and Master, and he does not meditate on Him, even for an instant.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੇ ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੩॥

kahu nānak prāṇī tījai pahrai bikhu sañchē andhu agiānu ॥3॥

कहु नानक प्राणी तीजै पहरै बिखु संचे अंधु अगिआनु ॥३॥

Says Nanak, in the third watch of the night, the blind and ignorant person gathers poison. ||3||

ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥

chauthai pahrai raiṇi kai vaṇjāriā mitrā dinu nēṛai āiā sōi ॥

चउथै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा दिनु नेड़ै आइआ सोइ ॥

In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, that day is drawing near.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੇਲੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

gurmukhi nāmu samāli tūṃ vaṇjāriā mitrā tērā dargah bēlī hōi ॥

गुरमुखि नामु समालि तूं वणजारिआ मित्रा तेरा दरगह बेली होइ ॥

As Gurmukh, remember the Naam, O my merchant friend. It shall be your Friend in the Court of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਣੀ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

gurmukhi nāmu samāli parāṇī antē hōi sakhāī ॥

गुरमुखि नामु समालि पराणी अंते होइ सखाई ॥

As Gurmukh, remember the Naam, O mortal; in the end, it shall be your only companion.

ਇਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੇਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ॥

ihu mōhu māiā tērai saṅgi na chālai jhūṭhī prīti lagāī ॥

इहु मोहु माइआ तेरै संगि न चालै झूठी प्रीति लगाई ॥

This emotional attachment to Maya shall not go with you; it is false to fall in love with it.

ਸਗਲੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਗੁਦਰੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੀ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

saglī raiṇi gudrī andhiārī sēvi satiguru chānṇu hōi ॥

सगली रैणि गुदरी अंधिआरी सेवि सतिगुरु चानणु होइ ॥

The entire night of your life has passed away in darkness; but by serving the True Guru, the Divine Light shall dawn within.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥

kahu nānak prāṇī chauthai pahrai dinu nēṛai āiā sōi ॥4॥

कहु नानक प्राणी चउथै पहरै दिनु नेड़ै आइआ सोइ ॥४॥

Says Nanak, O mortal, in the fourth watch of the night, that day is drawing near! ||4||

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਕਾ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੇ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸਾਥਿ ॥

likhiā āiā gōvind kā vaṇjāriā mitrā uṭhi chalē kamāṇā sāthi ॥

लिखिआ आइआ गोविंद का वणजारिआ मित्रा उठि चले कमाणा साथि ॥

Receiving the summons from the Lord of the Universe, O my merchant friend, you must arise and depart with the actions you have committed.

ਇਕ ਰਤੀ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਦੇਵਨੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਓਨੀ ਤਕੜੇ ਪਾਏ ਹਾਥ ॥

ik ratī bilam na dēvnī vaṇjāriā mitrā ōnī takṛē pāē hāth ॥

इक रती बिलम न देवनी वणजारिआ मित्रा ओनी तकड़े पाए हाथ ॥

You are not allowed a moment's delay, O my merchant friend; the Messenger of Death seizes you with firm hands.

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਹੇਲੇ ॥

likhiā āiā pakṛi chalāiā manmukh sadā duhēlē ॥

लिखिआ आइआ पकड़ि चलाइआ मनमुख सदा दुहेले ॥

Receiving the summons, people are seized and dispatched. The self-willed manmukhs are miserable forever.

ਜਿਨੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥

jinī pūrā satiguru sēviā sē dargah sadā suhēlē ॥

जिनी पूरा सतिगुरु सेविआ से दरगह सदा सुहेले ॥

But those who serve the Perfect True Guru are forever happy in the Court of the Lord.

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਜੁਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋ ਬੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਖਾਤਿ ॥

karam dhartī sarīru jug antri jō bōvai sō khāti ॥

करम धरती सरीरु जुग अंतरि जो बोवै सो खाति ॥

The body is the field of karma in this age; whatever you plant, you shall harvest.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਵਾਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਭਵਾਤਿ ॥੫॥੧॥੪॥

kahu nānak bhagat sōhhi darvārē manmukh sadā bhavāti ॥5॥1॥4॥

कहु नानक भगत सोहहि दरवारे मनमुख सदा भवाति ॥५॥१॥४॥

Says Nanak, the devotees look beautiful in the Court of the Lord; the self-willed manmukhs wander forever in reincarnation. ||5||1||4||
