ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਾਬੇ ਪਾਯਾ ਬਖਸ਼ ਦਰ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਦੇ ਫਿਰ ਘਾਲ ਕਮਾਈ॥

ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਾਬੇ ਪਾਯਾ ਬਖਸ਼ ਦਰ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਦੇ ਫਿਰ ਘਾਲ ਕਮਾਈ॥

pahilāṃ bābē pāyā bakhash dar pichhōṃ dē phir ghāl kamāī॥

पहिलां बाबे पाया बखश दर पिछों दे फिर घाल कमाई॥

First of all Baba Nanak obtained the gate of the grace (of Lord) and then He underwent and earned the rigorous discipline( of heart and mind).

ਰੇਤ ਅੱਕ ਆਹਾਰ ਕਰ ਰੋੜਾਂ ਕੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਰੀ ਵਿਛਾਈ॥

rēt akk āhār kar rōṛāṃ kī gur karī vichhāī॥

रेत अॱक आहार कर रोड़ां की गुर करी विछाई॥

He fed himself with sand and swallow-wort and made stones his bedding i.e. he enjoyed poverty too.

ਭਾਰੀ ਕਰੀ ਤੱਪਸਿਆ ਬਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉਂ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ॥

bhārī karī tappsiā baḍē bhāg hari siuṃ baṇi āī॥

भारी करी तॱपसिआ बडे भाग हरि सिउं बणि आई॥

He offered hid full devotion and then he was fortunate to have proximity with God.

ਬਾਬਾ ਪੈਧਾ ਸਚ ਖੰਡ ਨਾਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਪਾਈ॥

bābā paidhā sac khaṇḍ nānidhi nām garībī pāī॥

बाबा पैधा सच खंड नानिधि नाम गरीबी पाई॥

Baba reached the region of truth wherefrom he received Nam, the storehouse of nine treasures and humility.

ਬਾਬਾ ਦੇਖੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰ ਜਲਤੀ ਸਭ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਵੀ ਦਿਸ ਆਈ॥

bābā dēkhē dhiān dhar jaltī sabh prithvī dis āī॥

बाबा देखे धिआन धर जलती सभ प्रिथवी दिस आई॥

In his meditation, Baba found the whole earth burning (with the fire of lust and anger).

ਬਾਝਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰ ਹੈ ਹੈਹੈ ਕਰਦੀ ਸੁਣੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ॥

bājhhu gurū gubār hai haihai kardī suṇī lukāī॥

बाझहु गुरू गुबार है हैहै करदी सुणी लुकाई॥

Without Guru there is utter darkness and he heard the cries of the common men.

ਬਾਬੇ ਭੇਖ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਉਦੱਾਸੀ ਕੀ ਰੀਤ ਚਲਾਈ॥

bābē bhēkh baṇāiā udaāsī kī rīt chalāī॥

बाबे भेख बणाइआ उदॱासी की रीत चलाई॥

To further understand the people, Guru Nanak donned robes in their manner and preached them to be detached (from the pleasure and pain).

ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਸੋਧਨ ਧਰਤ ਲੁਕਾਈ ॥੨੪॥

chaṛhiā sōdhan dharat lukāī ॥24॥

चड़्हिआ सोधन धरत लुकाई ॥२४॥

Thus he went out to depurate humanity on earth.
