ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ik-ōṅkār satigur prasādi ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥

ਉਜਲੁ ਕੈਹਾ ਚਿਲਕਣਾ ਘੋਟਿਮ ਕਾਲੜੀ ਮਸੁ ॥

ujlu kaihā chilkaṇā ghōṭim kālaṛī masu ॥

उजलु कैहा चिलकणा घोटिम कालड़ी मसु ॥

Bronze is bright and shiny, but when it is rubbed, its blackness appears.

ਧੋਤਿਆ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਾ ਤਿਸੁ ॥੧॥

dhōtiā jūṭhi na utrai jē sau dhōvā tisu ॥1॥

धोतिआ जूठि न उतरै जे सउ धोवा तिसु ॥१॥

Washing it, its impurity is not removed, even if it is washed a hundred times. ||1||

ਸਜਣ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੈ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥

sajaṇ sēī nāli mai chaldiā nāli chalann‍ i॥

सजण सेई नालि मै चलदिआ नालि चलंन्‍ ि॥

They alone are my friends, who travel along with me;

ਜਿਥੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਖੜੇ ਦਿਸੰਨਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jithai lēkhā maṅgīai tithai khaṛē disnni ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

जिथै लेखा मंगीऐ तिथै खड़े दिसंनि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

And in that place, where the accounts are called for, they appear standing with me. ||1||Pause||

ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਚਿਤਵੀਆਹਾ ॥

kōṭhē maṇḍap māṛīā pāshu chitvīāhā ॥

कोठे मंडप माड़ीआ पासहु चितवीआहा ॥

There are houses, mansions and tall buildings, painted on all sides;

ਢਠੀਆ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਖਣੀਆਹਾ ॥੨॥

ḍhaṭhīā kammi na āvnī vichhu sakhṇīāhā ॥2॥

ढठीआ कंमि न आवन्‍ी विचहु सखणीआहा ॥२॥

But they are empty within, and they crumble like useless ruins. ||2||

ਬਗਾ ਬਗੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਮੰਝਿ ਵਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥

bagā bagē kapaṛē tīrath mañjhi vasann‍ i॥

बगा बगे कपड़े तीरथ मंझि वसंन्‍ ि॥

The herons in their white feathers dwell in the sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

ਘੁਟਿ ਘੁਟਿ ਜੀਆ ਖਾਵਣੇ ਬਗੇ ਨਾ ਕਹੀਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੩॥

ghuṭi ghuṭi jīā khāvṇē bagē nā kahīan‍ i॥3॥

घुटि घुटि जीआ खावणे बगे ना कहीअन्‍ ि॥३॥

They tear apart and eat the living beings, and so they are not called white. ||3||

ਸਿੰਮਲ ਰੁਖੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਮੈ ਮੈਜਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੁਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥

simmal rukhu sarīru mai maijan dēkhi bhulann‍ i॥

सिंमल रुखु सरीरु मै मैजन देखि भुलंन्‍ ि॥

My body is like the simmal tree; seeing me, other people are fooled.

ਸੇ ਫਲ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੪॥

sē phal kammi na āvnī tē guṇ mai tani hann‍ i॥4॥

से फल कंमि न आवन्‍ी ते गुण मै तनि हंन्‍ ि॥४॥

Its fruits are useless - just like the qualities of my body. ||4||

ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਇਆ ਡੂਗਰ ਵਾਟ ਬਹੁਤੁ ॥

andhulai bhāru uṭhāiā ḍūgar vāṭ bahutu ॥

अंधुलै भारु उठाइआ डूगर वाट बहुतु ॥

The blind man is carrying such a heavy load, and his journey through the mountains is so long.

ਅਖੀ ਲੋੜੀ ਨਾ ਲਹਾ ਹਉ ਚੜਿ ਲੰਘਾ ਕਿਤੁ ॥੫॥

akhī lōṛī nā lahā hau chaṛi laṅghā kitu ॥5॥

अखी लोड़ी ना लहा हउ चड़ि लंघा कितु ॥५॥

My eyes can see, but I cannot find the Way. How can I climb up and cross over the mountain? ||5||

ਚਾਕਰੀਆ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਿਤੁ ॥

chākarīā chaṅgiāīā avar siāṇap kitu ॥

चाकरीआ चंगिआईआ अवर सिआणप कितु ॥

What good does it do to serve, and be good, and be clever?

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਬਧਾ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ॥੬॥੧॥੩॥

nānak nāmu samāli tūṃ badhā chhuṭhi jitu ॥6॥1॥3॥

नानक नामु समालि तूं बधा छुटहि जितु ॥६॥१॥३॥

O Nanak, contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and you shall be released from bondage. ||6||1||3||
