ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

nā manu marai na kārju hōi ॥

ना मनु मरै न कारजु होइ ॥

The mind does not die, so the job is not accomplished.

ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਇ ॥

manu vasi dūtā durmati dōi ॥

मनु वसि दूता दुरमति दोइ ॥

The mind is under the power of the demons of evil intellect and duality.

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

manu mānai gur tē iku hōi ॥1॥

मनु मानै गुर ते इकु होइ ॥१॥

But when the mind surrenders, through the Guru, it becomes one. ||1||

ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਰਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਹ ਵਸਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

nirguṇ rāmu guṇah vasi hōi ॥

निरगुण रामु गुणह वसि होइ ॥

The Lord is without attributes; the attributes of virtue are under His control.

ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

āpu nivāri bīchārē sōi ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

आपु निवारि बीचारे सोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

One who eliminates selfishness contemplates Him. ||1||Pause||

ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥

manu bhūlō bahu chitai vikāru ॥

मनु भूलो बहु चितै विकारु ॥

The deluded mind thinks of all sorts of corruption.

ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥

manu bhūlō siri āvai bhāru ॥

मनु भूलो सिरि आवै भारु ॥

When the mind is deluded, the load of wickedness falls on the head.

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

manu mānai hari ēkṅkāru ॥2॥

मनु मानै हरि एकंकारु ॥२॥

But when the mind surrenders to the Lord, it realizes the One and Only Lord. ||2||

ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

manu bhūlō māiā ghari jāi ॥

मनु भूलो माइआ घरि जाइ ॥

The deluded mind enters the house of Maya.

ਕਾਮਿ ਬਿਰੂਧਉ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਠਾਇ ॥

kāmi birūdhau rahai na ṭhāi ॥

कामि बिरूधउ रहै न ठाइ ॥

Engrossed in sexual desire, it does not remain steady.

ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇ ॥੩॥

hari bhaju prāṇī rasan rasāi ॥3॥

हरि भजु प्राणी रसन रसाइ ॥३॥

O mortal, lovingly vibrate the Lord's Name with your tongue. ||3||

ਗੈਵਰ ਹੈਵਰ ਕੰਚਨ ਸੁਤ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

gaivar haivar kañchan sut nārī ॥

गैवर हैवर कंचन सुत नारी ॥

Elephants, horses, gold, children and spouses

ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪਿੜ ਚਾਲੈ ਹਾਰੀ ॥

bahu chintā piṛ chālai hārī ॥

बहु चिंता पिड़ चालै हारी ॥

In the anxious affairs of all these, people lose the game and depart.

ਜੂਐ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਕਾਚੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥

jūai khēlṇu kāchī sārī ॥4॥

जूऐ खेलणु काची सारी ॥४॥

In the game of chess, their pieces do not reach their destination. ||4||

ਸੰਪਉ ਸੰਚੀ ਭਏ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

sampau sañchī bhaē vikār ॥

संपउ संची भए विकार ॥

They gather wealth, but only evil comes from it.

ਹਰਖ ਸੋਕ ਉਭੇ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥

harakh sōk ubhē darvāri ॥

हरख सोक उभे दरवारि ॥

Pleasure and pain stand in the doorway.

ਸੁਖੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੫॥

sukhu sahjē japi ridai murāri ॥5॥

सुखु सहजे जपि रिदै मुरारि ॥५॥

Intuitive peace comes by meditating on the Lord, within the heart. ||5||

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

nadri karē tā mēli milāē ???

नदरि करे ता मेलि मिलाए ॥

When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites us in His Union.

ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥

guṇ saṅgrahi augaṇ sabdi jalāē ॥

गुण संग्रहि अउगण सबदि जलाए ॥

Through the Word of the Shabad, merits are gathered in, and demerits are burned away.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥

gurmukhi nāmu padārthu pāē ॥6॥

गुरमुखि नामु पदारथु पाए ॥६॥

The Gurmukh obtains the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥

binu nāvai sabh dūkh nivāsu ॥

बिनु नावै सभ दूख निवासु ॥

Without the Name, all live in pain.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

manmukh mūṛ māiā chit vāsu ॥

मनमुख मूड़ माइआ चित वासु ॥

The consciousness of the foolish, self-willed manmukh is the dwelling place of Maya.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੭॥

gurmukhi giānu dhuri karmi likhiāsu ॥7॥

गुरमुखि गिआनु धुरि करमि लिखिआसु ॥७॥

The Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom, according to pre-ordained destiny. ||7||

ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥

manu chañclu dhāvtu phuni dhāvai ॥

मनु चंचलु धावतु फुनि धावै ॥

The fickle mind continuously runs after fleeting things.

ਸਾਚੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

sāchē sūchhē mailu na bhāvai ॥

साचे सूचे मैलु न भावै ॥

The Pure True Lord is not pleased by filth.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੩॥

nānak gurmukhi hari guṇ gāvai ॥8॥3॥

नानक गुरमुखि हरि गुण गावै ॥८॥३॥

O Nanak, the Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||3||
