ਮਾਥੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੂਰਿ ॥

आसा महला ५ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:

ਮਾਥੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੂਰਿ ॥

māthai trikuṭī drisṭi karūri ॥

माथै त्रिकुटी द्रिसटि करूरि ॥

A frown creases her forehead, and her look is evil.

ਬੋਲੈ ਕਉੜਾ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਕੀ ਫੂੜਿ ॥

bōlai kauṛā jihbā kī phūṛi ॥

बोलै कउड़ा जिहबा की फूड़ि ॥

Her speech is bitter, and her tongue is rude.

ਸਦਾ ਭੂਖੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥

sadā bhūkhī piru jānai dūri ॥1॥

सदा भूखी पिरु जानै दूरि ॥१॥

She is always hungry, and she believes her Husband to be far away. ||1||

ਐਸੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਕ ਰਾਮਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥

aisī istrī ik rāmi upāī ॥

ऐसी इसत्री इक रामि उपाई ॥

Such is Maya, the woman, which the One Lord has created.

ਉਨਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇਆ ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

uni sabhu jagu khāiā ham guri rākhē mērē bhāī ॥ rahāu ॥

उनि सभु जगु खाइआ हम गुरि राखे मेरे भाई ॥ रहाउ ॥

She is devouring the whole world, but the Guru has saved me, O my Siblings of Destiny. ||Pause||

ਪਾਇ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੋਹਿਆ ॥

pāi ṭhagaulī sabhu jagu jōhiā ॥

पाइ ठगउली सभु जगु जोहिआ ॥

Administering her poisons, she has overcome the whole world.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹਾਦੇਉ ਮੋਹਿਆ ॥

brahmā bisnu mahādēu mōhiā ॥

ब्रहमा बिसनु महादेउ मोहिआ ॥

She has bewitched Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਸੋਹਿਆ ॥੨॥

gurmukhi nāmi lagē sē sōhiā ॥2॥

गुरमुखि नामि लगे से सोहिआ ॥२॥

Only those Gurmukhs who are attuned to the Naam are blessed. ||2||

ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਪੁਨਹਚਰਨਾ ॥

varat nēm kari thākē punhacranā ॥

वरत नेम करि थाके पुनहचरना ॥

Performing fasts, religious observances and atonements, the mortals have grown weary.

ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵੇ ਸਭ ਧਰਨਾ ॥

taṭ tīrath bhavē sabh dharnā ॥

तट तीरथ भवे सभ धरना ॥

They wander over the entire planet, on pilgrimages to the banks of sacred rivers.

ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾ ॥੩॥

sē ubrē ji satigur kī sarnā ॥3॥

से उबरे जि सतिगुर की सरना ॥३॥

But they alone are saved, who seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru. ||3||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭੋ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ॥

māiā mōhi sabhō jagu bādhā ॥

माइआ मोहि सभो जगु बाधा ॥

Attached to Maya, the whole world is in bondage.

ਹਉਮੈ ਪਚੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂਰਾਖਾ ॥

haumai pachai manmukh mūrākhā ॥

हउमै पचै मनमुख मूराखा ॥

The foolish self-willed manmukhs are consumed by their egotism.

ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਹਮ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੯੬॥

gur nānak bāh pakri ham rākhā ॥4॥2॥96॥

गुर नानक बाह पकरि हम राखा ॥४॥२॥९६॥

Taking me by the arm, Guru Nanak has saved me. ||4||2||96||
