ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਦੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੋ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਹ ਅਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥

Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:

ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਦੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੋ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਹ ਅਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥

māt garabh dukh sāgrō piārē tah apṇā nāmu japāiā ॥

मात गरभ दुख सागरो पिआरे तह अपणा नामु जपाइआ ॥

The womb of the mother is an ocean of pain, O Beloved; even there, the Lord causes His Name to be chanted.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਸਰੀਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥

bāhri kāḍhi bikhu pasarīā piārē māiā mōhu vadhāiā ॥

बाहरि काढि बिखु पसरीआ पिआरे माइआ मोहु वधाइआ ॥

When he emerges, he finds corruption pervading everywhere, O Beloved, and he becomes increasingly attached to Maya.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕੀਤੋ ਕਰਮੁ ਆਪਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥

jis nō kītō karmu āpi piārē tisu pūrā gurū milāiā ॥

जिस नो कीतो करमु आपि पिआरे तिसु पूरा गुरू मिलाइआ ॥

One whom the Lord blesses with His kind favor, O Beloved, meets the Perfect Guru.

ਸੋ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

sō ārādhē sāsi sāsi piārē rām nām liv lāiā ॥1॥

सो आराधे सासि सासि पिआरे राम नाम लिव लाइआ ॥१॥

He worships the Lord in adoration with each and every breath, O Beloved; he is lovingly attached to the Lord's Name. ||1||

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਟੇਕ ॥

mani tani tērī ṭēk hai piārē mani tani tērī ṭēk ॥

मनि तनि तेरी टेक है पिआरे मनि तनि तेरी टेक ॥

You are the support of my mind and body, O Beloved; You are the support of my mind and body.

ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਨਹਾਰੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਏਕ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

tudhu binu avru na karnahāru piārē antrajāmī ēk ॥ rahāu ॥

तुधु बिनु अवरु न करनहारु पिआरे अंतरजामी एक ॥ रहाउ ॥

There is no other Creator except for You, O Beloved; You alone are the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. ||Pause||

ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਇਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

kōṭi janam bhrami āiā piārē anik jōni dukhu pāi ॥

कोटि जनम भ्रमि आइआ पिआरे अनिक जोनि दुखु पाइ ॥

After wandering in doubt for millions of incarnations, he comes into the world, O Beloved; for uncounted lifetimes, he has suffered in pain.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

sāchā sāhibu visariā piārē bahutī milai sajāi ॥

साचा साहिबु विसरिआ पिआरे बहुती मिलै सजाइ ॥

He has forgotten his True Lord and Master, O Beloved, and so he suffers terrible punishment.

ਜਿਨ ਭੇਟੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥

jin bhēṭai pūrā satigurū piārē sē lāgē sāchai nāi ॥

जिन भेटै पूरा सतिगुरू पिआरे से लागे साचै नाइ ॥

Those who meet with the Perfect True Guru, O Beloved, are attached to the True Name.

ਤਿਨਾ ਪਿਛੈ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜੋ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥੨॥

tinā pichhai chhuṭīai piārē jō sāchī sarṇāi ॥2॥

तिना पिछै छुटीऐ पिआरे जो साची सरणाइ ॥२॥

We are saved by following those, O Beloved, who seek the Sanctuary of the True Lord. ||2||

ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਖਾਇਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਰੋਗੁ ॥

miṭhā kari kai khāiā piārē tini tani kītā rōgu ॥

मिठा करि कै खाइआ पिआरे तिनि तनि कीता रोगु ॥

He thinks that his food is so sweet, O Beloved, but it makes his body ill.

ਕਉੜਾ ਹੋਇ ਪਤਿਸਟਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

kauṛā hōi patisṭiā piārē tis tē upjiā sōgu ॥

कउड़ा होइ पतिसटिआ पिआरे तिस ते उपजिआ सोगु ॥

It turns out to be bitter, O Beloved, and it produces only sadness.

ਭੋਗ ਭੁੰਚਾਇ ਭੁਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥

bhōg bhuñchāi bhulāinu piārē utrai nahī vijōgu ॥

भोग भुंचाइ भुलाइअनु पिआरे उतरै नही विजोगु ॥

The Lord leads him astray in the enjoyment of pleasures, O Beloved, and so his sense of separation does not depart.

ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਉਧਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਧੁਰੇ ਪਇਆ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੩॥

jō gur mēli udhāriā piārē tin dhurē paiā sañjōgu ॥3॥

जो गुर मेलि उधारिआ पिआरे तिन धुरे पइआ संजोगु ॥३॥

Those who meet the Guru are saved, O Beloved; this is their pre-ordained destiny. ||3||

ਮਾਇਆ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਅਟਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਮੂਲਿ ॥

māiā lālchi aṭiā piārē chiti na āvahi mūli ॥

माइआ लालचि अटिआ पिआरे चिति न आवहि मूलि ॥

He is filled with longing for Maya, O Beloved, and so the Lord does not ever come into his mind.

ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੇ ਤਨ ਹੋਏ ਧੂੜਿ ॥

jin tū visrahi pārbraham suāmī sē tan hōē dhūṛi ॥

जिन तू विसरहि पारब्रहम सुआमी से तन होए धूड़ि ॥

Those who forget You, O Supreme Lord Master, their bodies turn to dust.

ਬਿਲਲਾਟ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੂਲੁ ॥

billāṭ karahi bahutēriā piārē utrai nāhī sūlu ॥

बिललाट करहि बहुतेरिआ पिआरे उतरै नाही सूलु ॥

They cry out and scream horribly, O Beloved, but their torment does not end.

ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਮੂਲੁ ॥੪॥

jō gur mēli savāriā piārē tin kā rahiā mūlu ॥4॥

जो गुर मेलि सवारिआ पिआरे तिन का रहिआ मूलु ॥४॥

Those who meet the Guru, and reform themselves, O Beloved, their capital remains intact. ||4||

ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਜਈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜੇ ਕਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਇ ॥

sākat saṅgu na kījaī piārē jē kā pāri vasāi ॥

साकत संगु न कीजई पिआरे जे का पारि वसाइ ॥

As far as possible, do not associate with the faithless cynics, O Beloved.

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੁੋ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

jisu miliai hari visrai piārē sō muhi kālai uṭhi jāi ॥

जिसु मिलिऐ हरि विसरै पिआरे सुो मुहि कालै उठि जाइ ॥

Meeting with them, the Lord is forgotten, O Beloved, and you rise and depart with a blackened face.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

manmukhi ḍhōī nah milai piārē dargah milai sajāi ॥

मनमुखि ढोई नह मिलै पिआरे दरगह मिलै सजाइ ॥

The self-willed manmukh finds no rest or shelter, O Beloved; in the Court of the Lord, they are punished.

ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥

jō gur mēli savāriā piārē tinā pūrī pāi ॥5॥

जो गुर मेलि सवारिआ पिआरे तिना पूरी पाइ ॥५॥

Those who meet with the Guru, and reform themselves, O Beloved, their affairs are resolved. ||5||

ਸੰਜਮ ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

sañjam sahas siāṇpā piārē ik na chalī nāli ॥

संजम सहस सिआणपा पिआरे इक न चली नालि ॥

One may have thousands of clever tricks and techniques of austere self-discipline, O Beloved, but not even one of them will go with him.

ਜੋ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੁਲਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਗਾਲਿ ॥

jō bēmukh gōbind tē piārē tin kuli lāgai gāli ॥

जो बेमुख गोबिंद ते पिआरे तिन कुलि लागै गालि ॥

Those who turn their backs on the Lord of the Universe, O Beloved, their families are stained with disgrace.

ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਤੀਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਨ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

hōdī vastu na jātīā piārē kūṛu na chalī nāli ॥

होदी वसतु न जातीआ पिआरे कूड़ु न चली नालि ॥

They do not realize that they do have Him , O Beloved; falsehood will not go with them.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਮਿਲਾਇਓਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੬॥

satiguru jinā milāiōnu piārē sāchā nāmu samāli ॥6॥

सतिगुरु जिना मिलाइओनु पिआरे साचा नामु समालि ॥६॥

Those who meet with the True Guru, O Beloved, dwell upon the True Name. ||6||

ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥

satu santōkhu giānu dhiānu piārē jis nō nadri karē ॥

सतु संतोखु गिआनु धिआनु पिआरे जिस नो नदरि करे ॥

When the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, O Beloved, one is blessed with Truth, contentment, wisdom and meditation.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਰਵੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪੂਰ ਭਰੇ ॥

andinu kīrtanu guṇ ravai piārē ammriti pūr bharē ॥

अनदिनु कीरतनु गुण रवै पिआरे अंम्रिति पूर भरे ॥

Night and day, he sings the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, O Beloved, totally filled with Ambrosial Nectar.

ਦੁਖ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਿਨ ਲੰਘਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥

dukh sāgru tin laṅghiā piārē bhavjalu pāri parē ॥

दुख सागरु तिन लंघिआ पिआरे भवजलु पारि परे ॥

He crosses over the sea of pain, O Beloved, and swims across the terrifying world-ocean.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੇਈ ਸਦਾ ਖਰੇ ॥੭॥

jisu bhāvai tisu mēli laihi piārē sēī sadā kharē ॥7॥

जिसु भावै तिसु मेलि लैहि पिआरे सेई सदा खरे ॥७॥

One who is pleasing to His Will, He unites with Himself, O Beloved; he is forever true. ||7||

ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਦੇਉ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭਗਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥

sammrath purkhu daiāl dēu piārē bhagtā tis kā tāṇu ॥

संम्रथ पुरखु दइआल देउ पिआरे भगता तिस का ताणु ॥

The all-powerful Divine Lord is compassionate, O Beloved; He is the Support of His devotees.

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਢਹਿ ਪਏ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

tisu sarṇāī ḍhahi paē piārē ji antrajāmī jāṇu ॥

तिसु सरणाई ढहि पए पिआरे जि अंतरजामी जाणु ॥

I seek His Sanctuary, O Beloved; He is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥

haltu paltu savāriā piārē masatki sachu nīsāṇu ॥

हलतु पलतु सवारिआ पिआरे मसतकि सचु नीसाणु ॥

He has adorned me in this world and the next, O Beloved; He has placed the Emblem of Truth upon my forehead.

ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੮॥੨॥

sō prabhu kadē na vīsrai piārē nānak sad kurbāṇu ॥8॥2॥

सो प्रभु कदे न वीसरै पिआरे नानक सद कुरबाणु ॥८॥२॥

I shall never forget that God, O Beloved; Nanak is forever a sacrifice to Him. ||8||2||
