ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਆਇਆ ॥

Todee, Fifth Mehl:

ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਆਇਆ ॥

mānukhu binu būjhē birthā āiā ॥

मानुखु बिनु बूझे बिरथा आइआ ॥

Without understanding, his coming into the world is useless.

ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਉ ਮਿਰਤਕੁ ਓਢਾਇਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

anik sāj sīgār bahu karatā jiu mirtaku ōḍhāiā ॥ rahāu ॥

अनिक साज सीगार बहु करता जिउ मिरतकु ओढाइआ ॥ रहाउ ॥

He puts on various ornaments and many decorations, but it is like dressing a corpse. ||Pause||

ਧਾਇ ਧਾਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਨ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

dhāi dhāi kripan sramu kīnō ikatr karī hai māiā ॥

धाइ धाइ क्रिपन स्रमु कीनो इकत्र करी है माइआ ॥

With great effort and exertion, the miser works to gather in the riches of Maya.

ਦਾਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਤਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥

dānu punnu nahī santan sēvā kit hī kāji na āiā ॥1॥

दानु पुंनु नही संतन सेवा कित ही काजि न आइआ ॥१॥

He does not give anything in charity or generosity, and he does not serve the Saints; his wealth does not do him any good at all. ||1||

ਕਰਿ ਆਭਰਣ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸੇਜਾ ਕਾਮਨਿ ਥਾਟੁ ਬਨਾਇਆ ॥

kari ābhraṇ savārī sējā kāmni thāṭu banāiā ॥

करि आभरण सवारी सेजा कामनि थाटु बनाइआ ॥

The soul-bride puts on her ornaments, embellishes her bed, and fashions decorations.

ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਭਰਤੇ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

saṅgu na pāiō apunē bhartē pēkhi pēkhi dukhu pāiā ॥2॥

संगु न पाइओ अपुने भरते पेखि पेखि दुखु पाइआ ॥२॥

But if she does not obtain the company of her Husband Lord, the sight of these decorations only brings her pain. ||2||

ਸਾਰੋ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮਜੂਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੁਹੁ ਮੂਸਲਹਿ ਛਰਾਇਆ ॥

sārō dinsu majūrī karatā tuhu mūslahi chharāiā ॥

सारो दिनसु मजूरी करता तुहु मूसलहि छराइआ ॥

The man works all day long, threshing the husks with the pestle.

ਖੇਦੁ ਭਇਓ ਬੇਗਾਰੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਘਰ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੩॥

khēdu bhaiō bēgārī niāī ghar kai kāmi na āiā ॥3॥

खेदु भइओ बेगारी निआई घर कै कामि न आइआ ॥३॥

He is depressed, like a forced laborer, and so he is of no use to his own home. ||3||

ਭਇਓ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

bhaiō anugrhu jā kau prabh kō tisu hirdai nāmu vasāiā ॥

भइओ अनुग्रहु जा कउ प्रभ को तिसु हिरदै नामु वसाइआ ॥

But when God shows His Mercy and Grace, He implants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within the heart.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਰਿਅਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥੪॥

sādhsaṅgti kai pāchhai pariau jan nānak hari rasu pāiā ॥4॥2॥4॥

साधसंगति कै पाछै परिअउ जन नानक हरि रसु पाइआ ॥४॥२॥४॥

Search the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, and find the sublime essence of the Lord. ||4||2||4||
