Prabhaatee, First Mehl:

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਛਾਇਆ ॥

māiā mōhi sagal jagu chhāiā ॥

माइआ मोहि सगल जगु छाइआ ॥

Emotional attachment to Maya is spread out all over the world.

ਕਾਮਣਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥

kāmṇi dēkhi kāmi lōbhāiā ॥

कामणि देखि कामि लोभाइआ ॥

Seeing a beautiful woman, the man is overcome with sexual desire.

ਸੁਤ ਕੰਚਨ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥

sut kañchan siu hētu vadhāiā ॥

सुत कंचन सिउ हेतु वधाइआ ॥

His love for his children and gold steadily increases.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਇਕੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

sabhu kichhu apnā iku rāmu parāiā ॥1॥

सभु किछु अपना इकु रामु पराइआ ॥१॥

He sees everything as his own, but he does not own the One Lord. ||1||

ਐਸਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ॥

aisā jāpu japau japmālī ॥

ऐसा जापु जपउ जपमाली ॥

I meditate as I chant on such a mala,

ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

dukh sukh parhari bhagti nirālī ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

दुख सुख परहरि भगति निराली ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

That I rise above pleasure and pain; I attain the most wondrous devotional worship of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

guṇ nidhān tērā antu na pāiā ॥

गुण निधान तेरा अंतु न पाइआ ॥

O Treasure of Virtue, Your limits cannot be found.

ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

sāc sabdi tujh māhi samāiā ॥

साच सबदि तुझ माहि समाइआ ॥

Through the True Word of the Shabad, I am absorbed into You.

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥

āvā gauṇu tudhu āpi rachāiā ॥

आवा गउणु तुधु आपि रचाइआ ॥

You Yourself created the comings and goings of reincarnation.

ਸੇਈ ਭਗਤ ਜਿਨ ਸਚਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

sēī bhagat jin sachi chitu lāiā ॥2॥

सेई भगत जिन सचि चितु लाइआ ॥२॥

They alone are devotees, who focus their consciousness on You. ||2||

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥

giānu dhiānu narhari nirbāṇī ॥

गिआनु धिआनु नरहरि निरबाणी ॥

Spiritual wisdom and meditation on the Lord, the Lord of Nirvaanaa

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

binu satigur bhēṭē kōi na jāṇī ॥

बिनु सतिगुर भेटे कोइ न जाणी ॥

- without meeting the True Guru, no one knows this.

ਸਗਲ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

sagal sarōvar jōti samāṇī ॥

सगल सरोवर जोति समाणी ॥

The Lord's Light fills the sacred pools of all beings.

ਆਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥

ānad rūp viṭhu kurbāṇī ॥3॥

आनद रूप विटहु कुरबाणी ॥३॥

I am a sacrifice to the Embodiment of Bliss. ||3||

ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਏ ॥

bhāu bhagti gurmatī pāē ॥

भाउ भगति गुरमती पाए ॥

Through the Guru's Teachings, one achieves loving devotional worship.

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥

haumai vichhu sabdi jalāē ॥

हउमै विचहु सबदि जलाए ॥

The Shabad burns away egotism from within.

ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥

dhāvtu rākhai ṭhāki rahāē ॥

धावतु राखै ठाकि रहाए ॥

The wandering mind is restrained and held in its place.

ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੪॥

sachā nāmu manni vasāē ॥4॥

सचा नामु मंनि वसाए ॥४॥

The True Name is enshrined in the mind. ||4||

ਬਿਸਮ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਦੀ ॥

bisam binōd rahē parmādī ॥

बिसम बिनोद रहे परमादी ॥

The exciting and intoxicating worldly plays come to an end,

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥

gurmati māniā ēk liv lāgī ॥

गुरमति मानिआ एक लिव लागी ॥

For those who accept the Guru's Teachings, and become lovingly attuned to the One Lord.

ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਗੀ ॥

dēkhi nivāriā jal mahi āgī ॥

देखि निवारिआ जल महि आगी ॥

Seeing this, the fire in the water is extinguished.

ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੫॥

sō būjhai hōvai vaḍbhāgī ॥5॥

सो बूझै होवै वडभागी ॥५॥

They alone realize this, who are blessed by great good fortune. ||5||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥

satiguru sēvē bharmu chukāē ॥

सतिगुरु सेवे भरमु चुकाए ॥

Serving the True Guru, doubt is dispelled.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥

andinu jāgai sachi liv lāē ॥

अनदिनु जागै सचि लिव लाए ॥

Those who are lovingly attuned to the True Lord remain awake and aware night and day.

ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

ēkō jāṇai avru na kōi ॥

एको जाणै अवरु न कोइ ॥

They know the One Lord, and no other.

ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥

sukhdātā sēvē nirmalu hōi ॥6॥

सुखदाता सेवे निरमलु होइ ॥६॥

Serving the Giver of peace, they become immaculate. ||6||

ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

sēvā surti sabdi vīchāri ॥

सेवा सुरति सबदि वीचारि ॥

Selfless service and intuitive awareness come by reflecting upon the Word of the Shabad.

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

japu tapu sañjmu haumai māri ॥

जपु तपु संजमु हउमै मारि ॥

Chanting, intensive meditation and austere self-discipline come by subduing the ego.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥

jīvan muktu jā sabdu suṇāē ॥

जीवन मुकतु जा सबदु सुणाए ॥

One becomes Jivan-mukta - liberated while yet alive, by listening to the Shabad.

ਸਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥

sachī rahat sachā sukhu pāē ॥7॥

सची रहत सचा सुखु पाए ॥७॥

Living a truthful way of life, one finds true peace. ||7||

ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

sukhdātā dukhu mēṭaṇhārā ॥

सुखदाता दुखु मेटणहारा ॥

The Giver of peace is the Eradicator of pain.

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੀਜੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥

avru na sūjhsi bījī kārā ॥

अवरु न सूझसि बीजी कारा ॥

I cannot conceive of serving any other.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥

tanu manu dhanu hari āgai rākhiā ॥

तनु मनु धनु हरि आगै राखिआ ॥

I place my body, mind and wealth in offering before Him.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥

nānku kahai mahā rasu chākhiā ॥8॥2॥

नानकु कहै महा रसु चाखिआ ॥८॥२॥

Says Nanak, I have tasted the supreme, sublime Essence of the Lord. ||8||2||
