ਕਰਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥

ਵਡਹੰਸੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

vaḍhaṃsu mahlā 1 ॥

वडहंसु महला १ ॥

Wadahans, First Mehl:

ਕਰਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥

karahu daiā tērā nāmu vakhāṇā ॥

करहु दइआ तेरा नामु वखाणा ॥

Show mercy to me, that I may chant Your Name.

ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈਐ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥

sabh upāīai āpi āpē sarab samāṇā ॥

सभ उपाईऐ आपि आपे सरब समाणा ॥

You Yourself created all, and You are pervading among all.

ਸਰਬੇ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਆਪਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਉਪਾਇ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਈਆ ॥

sarbē samāṇā āpi tūhai upāi dhandhai lāīā ॥

सरबे समाणा आपि तूहै उपाइ धंधै लाईआ ॥

You Yourself are pervading among all, and You link them to their tasks.

ਇਕਿ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਕੀਏ ਰਾਜੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਿਖ ਭਵਾਈਆ ॥

iki tujh hī kīē rājē iknā bhikh bhavāīā ॥

इकि तुझ ही कीए राजे इकना भिख भवाईआ ॥

Some, You have made kings, while others go about begging.

ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਤੁਝੁ ਕੀਆ ਮੀਠਾ ਏਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ॥

lōbhu mōhu tujhu kīā mīṭhā ētu bharmi bhulāṇā ॥

लोभु मोहु तुझु कीआ मीठा एतु भरमि भुलाणा ॥

You have made greed and emotional attachment seem sweet; they are deluded by this delusion.

ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਅਪਣੀ ਤਾਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥੧॥

sadā daiā karahu apṇī tāmi nāmu vakhāṇā ॥1॥

सदा दइआ करहु अपणी तामि नामु वखाणा ॥१॥

Be ever merciful to me; only then can I chant Your Name. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦਾ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥

nāmu tērā hai sāchā sadā mai mani bhāṇā ॥

नामु तेरा है साचा सदा मै मनि भाणा ॥

Your Name is True, and ever pleasing to my mind.

ਦੂਖੁ ਗਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਇ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥

dūkhu gaiā sukhu āi samāṇā ॥

दूखु गइआ सुखु आइ समाणा ॥

My pains are dispelled, and I am permeated with peace.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣਾ ॥

gāvni suri nar sughaṛ sujāṇā ॥

गावनि सुरि नर सुघड़ सुजाणा ॥

The angels, the mortals and the silent sages sing of You.

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸੁਜਾਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਹੇ ॥

suri nar sughaṛ sujāṇ gāvahi jō tērai mani bhāvahē ॥

सुरि नर सुघड़ सुजाण गावहि जो तेरै मनि भावहे ॥

The angels, the mortals and the silent sages sing of You; they are pleasing to Your Mind.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੇ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਹੇ ॥

māiā mōhē chēthi nāhī ahilā janmu gavāvahē ॥

माइआ मोहे चेतहि नाही अहिला जनमु गवावहे ॥

Enticed by Maya, they do not remember the Lord, and they waste away their lives in vain.

ਇਕਿ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਮੂਲੇ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

iki mūṛ mugadh na chēthi mūlē jō āiā tisu jāṇā ॥

इकि मूड़ मुगध न चेतहि मूले जो आइआ तिसु जाणा ॥

Some fools and idiots never think of the Lord; whoever has come, shall have to go.

ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੨॥

nāmu tērā sadā sāchā sōi mai mani bhāṇā ॥2॥

नामु तेरा सदा साचा सोइ मै मनि भाणा ॥२॥

Your Name is True, and ever pleasing to my mind. ||2||

ਤੇਰਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

tērā vakhtu suhāvā ammritu tērī bāṇī ॥

तेरा वखतु सुहावा अंम्रितु तेरी बाणी ॥

Beauteous is Your time, O Lord; the Bani of Your Word is Ambrosial Nectar.

ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਾਉ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥

sēvak sēvhi bhāu kari lāgā sāu parāṇī ॥

सेवक सेवहि भाउ करि लागा साउ पराणी ॥

Your servants serve You with love; these mortals are attached to Your essence.

ਸਾਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

sāu prāṇī tinā lāgā jinī ammritu pāiā ॥

साउ प्राणी तिना लागा जिनी अंम्रितु पाइआ ॥

Those mortals are attached to Your essence, who are blessed with the Ambrosial Name.

ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਜੋਇ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਿਤ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥

nāmi tērai jōi rātē nit chaṛhi savāiā ॥

नामि तेरै जोइ राते नित चड़हि सवाइआ ॥

Those who are imbued with Your Name, prosper more and more, day by day.

ਇਕੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਜਾਮਿ ਨ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੀ ॥

iku karmu dharmu na hōi sañjmu jāmi na ēku pachhāṇī ॥

इकु करमु धरमु न होइ संजमु जामि न एकु पछाणी ॥

Some do not practice good deeds, or live righteously; nor do they practice self-restraint. They do not realize the One Lord.

ਵਖਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥

vakhtu suhāvā sadā tērā ammrit tērī bāṇī ॥3॥

वखतु सुहावा सदा तेरा अंम्रित तेरी बाणी ॥३॥

Ever beauteous is Your time, O Lord; the Bani of Your Word is Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਵੈ ॥

hau balihārī sāchē nāvai ॥

हउ बलिहारी साचे नावै ॥

I am a sacrifice to the True Name.

ਰਾਜੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

rāju tērā kabhu na jāvai ॥

राजु तेरा कबहु न जावै ॥

Your rule shall never end.

ਰਾਜੋ ਤ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਹੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਵਏ ॥

rājō ta tērā sadā nihchalu ēhu kabhu na jāvaē ॥

राजो त तेरा सदा निहचलु एहु कबहु न जावए ॥

Your rule is eternal and unchanging; it shall never come to an end.

ਚਾਕਰੁ ਤ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੋਇ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ॥

chākru ta tērā sōi hōvai jōi sahji samāvē ॥

चाकरु त तेरा सोइ होवै जोइ सहजि समावए ॥

He alone becomes Your servant, who contemplates You in peaceful ease.

ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਤ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਮੂਲੇ ਪਾਪੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥

dusmanu ta dūkhu na lagai mūlē pāpu nēṛi na āvaē ॥

दुसमनु त दूखु न लगै मूले पापु नेड़ि न आवए ॥

Enemies and pains shall never touch him, and sin shall never draw near him.

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਹੋਵਾ ਏਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਵਏ ॥੪॥

hau balihārī sadā hōvā ēk tērē nāvaē ॥4॥

हउ बलिहारी सदा होवा एक तेरे नावए ॥४॥

I am forever a sacrifice to the One Lord, and Your Name. ||4||

ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੇਰੈ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥

jugah jugntari bhagat tumārē ॥ kīrti karahi suāmī tērai duārē ॥

जुगह जुगंतरि भगत तुमारे ॥ कीरति करहि सुआमी तेरै दुआरे ॥

Throughout the ages, Your devotees sing the Kirtan of Your Praises, O Lord Master, at Your Door.

ਜਪਹਿ ਤ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥

japhi ta sāchā ēku murārē ॥

जपहि त साचा एकु मुरारे ॥

They meditate on the One True Lord.

ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ਤਾਮਿ ਜਾਪਹਿ ਜਾਮਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਹੇ ॥

sāchā murārē tāmi jāphi jāmi manni vasāvahē ॥

साचा मुरारे तामि जापहि जामि मंनि वसावहे ॥

Only then do they meditate on the True Lord, when they enshrine Him in their minds.

ਭਰਮੋ ਭੁਲਾਵਾ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਕੀਆ ਜਾਮਿ ਏਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਹੇ ॥

bharmō bhulāvā tujhhi kīā jāmi ēhu chukāvahē ॥

भरमो भुलावा तुझहि कीआ जामि एहु चुकावहे ॥

Doubt and delusion are Your making; when these are dispelled,

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੇਹੁ ਜਮਹੁ ਉਬਾਰੇ ॥

gur parsādī karahu kirpā lēhu jamhu ubārē ॥

गुर परसादी करहु किरपा लेहु जमहु उबारे ॥

Then, by Guru's Grace, You grant Your Grace, and save them from the noose of Death.

ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥੫॥

jugah jugntari bhagat tumārē ॥5॥

जुगह जुगंतरि भगत तुमारे ॥५॥

Throughout the ages, they are Your devotees. ||5||

ਵਡੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

vaḍē mērē sāhibā alakh apārā ॥

वडे मेरे साहिबा अलख अपारा ॥

O my Great Lord and Master, You are unfathomable and infinite.

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹਉ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

kiu kari karau bēnntī hau ākhi na jāṇā ॥

किउ करि करउ बेनंती हउ आखि न जाणा ॥

How should I make and offer my prayer? I do not know what to say.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਾ ॥

nadri karahi tā sāchu pachhāṇā ॥

नदरि करहि ता साचु पछाणा ॥

If You bless me with Your Glance of Grace, I realize the Truth.

ਸਾਚੋ ਪਛਾਣਾ ਤਾਮਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਾਮਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਵਹੇ ॥

sāchō pachhāṇā tāmi tērā jāmi āpi bujhāvahē ॥

साचो पछाणा तामि तेरा जामि आपि बुझावहे ॥

Only then do I come to realize the Truth, when You Yourself instruct me.

ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਸਹਸਾ ਏਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਹੇ ॥

dūkh bhūkh saṃsāri kīē sahasā ēhu chukāvahē ॥

दूख भूख संसारि कीए सहसा एहु चुकावहे ॥

The pain and hunger of the world are Your making; dispel this doubt.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਹਸਾ ਬੁਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

binvanti nānku jāi sahasā bujhai gur bīchārā ॥

बिनवंति नानकु जाइ सहसा बुझै गुर बीचारा ॥

Prays Nanak, ones skepticism is taken away, when he understands the Guru's wisdom.

ਵਡਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੬॥

vaḍā sāhibu hai āpi alakh apārā ॥6॥

वडा साहिबु है आपि अलख अपारा ॥६॥

The Great Lord Master is unfathomable and infinite. ||6||

ਤੇਰੇ ਬੰਕੇ ਲੋਇਣ ਦੰਤ ਰੀਸਾਲਾ ॥

tērē baṅkē lōiṇ dant rīsālā ॥

तेरे बंके लोइण दंत रीसाला ॥

Your eyes are so beautiful, and Your teeth are delightful.

ਸੋਹਣੇ ਨਕ ਜਿਨ ਲੰਮੜੇ ਵਾਲਾ ॥

sōhṇē nak jin lammṛē vālā ॥

सोहणे नक जिन लंमड़े वाला ॥

Your nose is so graceful, and Your hair is so long.

ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੁਇਨੇ ਕੀ ਢਾਲਾ ॥

kañchan kāiā suinē kī ḍhālā ॥

कंचन काइआ सुइने की ढाला ॥

Your body is so precious, cast in gold.

ਸੋਵੰਨ ਢਾਲਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਮਾਲਾ ਜਪਹੁ ਤੁਸੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ॥

sōvann ḍhālā krisan mālā japhu tusī sahēlīhō ॥

सोवंन ढाला क्रिसन माला जपहु तुसी सहेलीहो ॥

His body is cast in gold, and He wears Krishna's mala; meditate on Him, O sisters.

ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਹੁ ਖੜੀਆ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਮਹੇਲੀਹੋ ॥

jam duāri na hōhu khaṛīā sikh suṇhu mahēlīhō ॥

जम दुआरि न होहु खड़ीआ सिख सुणहु महेलीहो ॥

You shall not have to stand at Death's door, O sisters, if you listen to these teachings.

ਹੰਸ ਹੰਸਾ ਬਗ ਬਗਾ ਲਹੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਜਾਲਾ ॥

haṃs haṃsā bag bagā lahai man kī jālā ॥

हंस हंसा बग बगा लहै मन की जाला ॥

From a crane, you shall be transformed into a swan, and the filth of your mind shall be removed.

ਬੰਕੇ ਲੋਇਣ ਦੰਤ ਰੀਸਾਲਾ ॥੭॥

baṅkē lōiṇ dant rīsālā ॥7॥

बंके लोइण दंत रीसाला ॥७॥

Your eyes are so beautiful, and Your teeth are delightful. ||7||

ਤੇਰੀ ਚਾਲ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਮਧੁਰਾੜੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

tērī chāl suhāvī madhurāṛī bāṇī ॥

तेरी चाल सुहावी मधुराड़ी बाणी ॥

Your walk is so graceful, and Your speech is so sweet.

ਕੁਹਕਨਿ ਕੋਕਿਲਾ ਤਰਲ ਜੁਆਣੀ ॥

kuhkani kōkilā taral juāṇī ॥

कुहकनि कोकिला तरल जुआणी ॥

You coo like a songbird, and your youthful beauty is alluring.

ਤਰਲਾ ਜੁਆਣੀ ਆਪਿ ਭਾਣੀ ਇਛ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਰੀਏ ॥

tarlā juāṇī āpi bhāṇī ichh man kī pūrīē ॥

तरला जुआणी आपि भाणी इछ मन की पूरीए ॥

Your youthful beauty is so alluring; it pleases You, and it fulfills the heart's desires.

ਸਾਰੰਗ ਜਿਉ ਪਗੁ ਧਰੈ ਠਿਮਿ ਠਿਮਿ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੁ ਸੰਧੂਰਏ ॥

sāraṅg jiu pagu dharai ṭhimi ṭhimi āpi āpu sandhūrē ॥

सारंग जिउ पगु धरै ठिमि ठिमि आपि आपु संधूरए ॥

Like an elephant, You step with Your Feet so carefully; You are satisfied with Yourself.

ਸ੍ਰੀਰੰਗ ਰਾਤੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਾਤੀ ਉਦਕੁ ਗੰਗਾ ਵਾਣੀ ॥

srīraṅg rātī phirai mātī udku gaṅgā vāṇī ॥

स्रीरंग राती फिरै माती उदकु गंगा वाणी ॥

She who is imbued with the Love of such a Great Lord, flows intoxicated, like the waters of the Ganges.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਚਾਲ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਮਧੁਰਾੜੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੮॥੨॥

binvanti nānku dāsu hari kā tērī chāl suhāvī madhurāṛī bāṇī ॥8॥2॥

बिनवंति नानकु दासु हरि का तेरी चाल सुहावी मधुराड़ी बाणी ॥८॥२॥

Prays Nanak, I am Your slave, O Lord; Your walk is so graceful, and Your speech is so sweet. ||8||2||
