Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਖੁਰਾਸਾਨ ਖਸਮਾਨਾ ਕੀਆ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨੁ ਡਰਾਇਆ ॥

khurāsān khasmānā kīā hindustānu ḍarāiā ॥

खुरासान खसमाना कीआ हिंदुसतानु डराइआ ॥

Having attacked Khuraasaan, Baabar terrified Hindustan.

ਆਪੈ ਦੋਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥

āpai dōsu na dēī karatā jamu kari muglu chaṛāiā ॥

आपै दोसु न देई करता जमु करि मुगलु चड़ाइआ ॥

The Creator Himself does not take the blame, but has sent the Mugal as the messenger of death.

ਏਤੀ ਮਾਰ ਪਈ ਕਰਲਾਣੇ ਤੈਂ ਕੀ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥

ētī mār paī karlāṇē taiṃ kī dardu na āiā ॥1॥

एती मार पई करलाणे तैं की दरदु न आइआ ॥१॥

There was so much slaughter that the people screamed. Didn't You feel compassion, Lord? ||1||

ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਈ ॥

karatā tūṃ sabhanā kā sōī ॥

करता तूं सभना का सोई ॥

O Creator Lord, You are the Master of all.

ਜੇ ਸਕਤਾ ਸਕਤੇ ਕਉ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jē sakatā saktē kau mārē tā mani rōsu na hōī ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

जे सकता सकते कउ मारे ता मनि रोसु न होई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

If some powerful man strikes out against another man, then no one feels any grief in their mind. ||1||Pause||

ਸਕਤਾ ਸੀਹੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਪੈ ਵਗੈ ਖਸਮੈ ਸਾ ਪੁਰਸਾਈ ॥

sakatā sīhu mārē pai vagai khasmai sā pursāī ॥

सकता सीहु मारे पै वगै खसमै सा पुरसाई ॥

But if a powerful tiger attacks a flock of sheep and kills them, then its master must answer for it.

ਰਤਨ ਵਿਗਾੜਿ ਵਿਗੋਏ ਕੁਤੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥

ratan vigāṛi vigōē kutṃī muiā sār na kāī ॥

रतन विगाड़ि विगोए कुतंØी मुइआ सार न काई ॥

This priceless country has been laid waste and defiled by dogs, and no one pays any attention to the dead.

ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥

āpē jōṛi vichhōṛē āpē vēkhu tērī vaḍiāī ॥2॥

आपे जोड़ि विछोड़े आपे वेखु तेरी वडिआई ॥२॥

You Yourself unite, and You Yourself separate; I gaze upon Your Glorious Greatness. ||2||

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਏ ਵਡਾ ਸਾਦ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥

jē kō nāu dharāē vaḍā sād karē mani bhāṇē ॥

जे को नाउ धराए वडा साद करे मनि भाणे ॥

One may give himself a great name, and revel in the pleasures of the mind,

ਖਸਮੈ ਨਦਰੀ ਕੀੜਾ ਆਵੈ ਜੇਤੇ ਚੁਗੈ ਦਾਣੇ ॥

khasmai nadrī kīṛā āvai jētē chugai dāṇē ॥

खसमै नदरी कीड़ा आवै जेते चुगै दाणे ॥

But in the Eyes of the Lord and Master, he is just a worm, for all the corn that he eats.

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥੩॥੫॥੩੯॥

mari mari jīvai tā kichhu pāē nānak nāmu vakhāṇē ॥3॥5॥39॥

मरि मरि जीवै ता किछु पाए नानक नामु वखाणे ॥३॥५॥३९॥

Only one who dies to his ego while yet alive, obtains the blessings, O Nanak, by chanting the Lord's Name. ||3||5||39||
