ਜਲ ਦੁਧ ਨਿਆਈ ਰੀਤਿ ਅਬ ਦੁਧ ਆਚ ਨਹੀ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹਰੇ ॥

Chhant:

ਜਲ ਦੁਧ ਨਿਆਈ ਰੀਤਿ ਅਬ ਦੁਧ ਆਚ ਨਹੀ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹਰੇ ॥

jal dudh niāī rīti ab dudh āc nahī man aisī prīti harē ॥

जल दुध निआई रीति अब दुध आच नही मन ऐसी प्रीति हरे ॥

Just like water, which loves milk so much that it will not let it burn - O my mind, so love the Lord.

ਅਬ ਉਰਝਿਓ ਅਲਿ ਕਮਲੇਹ ਬਾਸਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਮਗਨ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਭੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਟਰੈ ॥

ab urjhiō ali kamlēh bāsan māhi magan iku khinu bhī nāhi ṭarai ॥

अब उरझिओ अलि कमलेह बासन माहि मगन इकु खिनु भी नाहि टरै ॥

The bumble bee becomes enticed by the lotus, intoxicated by its fragrance, and does not leave it, even for a moment.

ਖਿਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਟਰੀਐ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹਰੀਐ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਹਭਿ ਰਸ ਅਰਪੀਐ ॥

khinu nāhi ṭarīai prīti harīai sīgār habhi ras arpīai ॥

खिनु नाहि टरीऐ प्रीति हरीऐ सीगार हभि रस अरपीऐ ॥

Do not let up your love for the Lord, even for an instant; dedicate all your decorations and pleasures to Him.

ਜਹ ਦੂਖੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ਭਣੀਐ ਤਹ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਡਰਪੀਐ ॥

jah dūkhu suṇīai jam panthu bhaṇīai tah sādhsaṅgi na ḍarpīai ॥

जह दूखु सुणीऐ जम पंथु भणीऐ तह साधसंगि न डरपीऐ ॥

Where painful cries are heard, and the Way of Death is shown, there, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, you shall not be afraid.

ਕਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਣੀਐ ਸਗਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਛਤ ਦੁਖ ਹਰੇ ॥

kari kīrti gōvind guṇīai sagal prāchhat dukh harē ॥

करि कीरति गोविंद गुणीऐ सगल प्राछत दुख हरे ॥

Sing the Kirtan, the Praises of the Lord of the Universe, and all sins and sorrows shall depart.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਛੰਤ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਕਰੇਹੁ ਐਸੀ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥

kahu nānak chhant gōvind hari kē man hari siu nēhu karēhu aisī man prīti harē ॥1॥

कहु नानक छंत गोविंद हरि के मन हरि सिउ नेहु करेहु ऐसी मन प्रीति हरे ॥१॥

Says Nanak, chant the Hymns of the Lord, the Lord of the Universe, O mind, and enshrine love for the Lord; love the Lord this way in your mind. ||1||

ਜੈਸੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਨੀਰ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਭੀ ਨਾ ਧੀਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਕਰੇਹੁ ॥

jaisī machhulī nīr iku khinu bhī nā dhīrē man aisā nēhu karēhu ॥

जैसी मछुली नीर इकु खिनु भी ना धीरे मन ऐसा नेहु करेहु ॥

As the fish loves the water, and is not content even for an instant outside it, O my mind, love the Lord in this way.

ਜੈਸੀ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਪਿਆਸ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਬੂੰਦ ਚਵੈ ਬਰਸੁ ਸੁਹਾਵੇ ਮੇਹੁ ॥

jaisī chātrik piās khinu khinu būnd chavai barsu suhāvē mēhu ॥

जैसी चात्रिक पिआस खिनु खिनु बूंद चवै बरसु सुहावे मेहु ॥

Like the song-bird, thirsting for the rain-drops, chirping each and every moment to the beautiful rain clouds.

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੀਜੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਅਤਿ ਲਾਈਐ ਚਿਤੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥

hari prīti karījai ihu manu dījai ati lāīai chitu murārī ॥

हरि प्रीति करीजै इहु मनु दीजै अति लाईऐ चितु मुरारी ॥

So love the Lord, and give to Him this mind of yours; totally focus your consciousness on the Lord.

ਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੀਜੈ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥

mānu na kījai sarṇi parījai darsan kau balihārī ॥

मानु न कीजै सरणि परीजै दरसन कउ बलिहारी ॥

Do not take pride in yourself, but seek the Sanctuary of the Lord, and make yourself a sacrifice to the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.

ਗੁਰ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨੇ ਮਿਲੁ ਨਾਹ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੇ ਧਨ ਦੇਦੀ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਨੇਹਾ ॥

gur suprsannē milu nāh vichhunnē dhan dēdī sāchu sanēhā ॥

गुर सुप्रसंने मिलु नाह विछुंने धन देदी साचु सनेहा ॥

When the Guru is totally pleased, the separated soul-bride is re-united with her Husband Lord; she sends the message of her true love.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਛੰਤ ਅਨੰਤ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਨੇਹਾ ਮਨ ਐਸਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਕਰੇਹੁ ॥੨॥

kahu nānak chhant anant ṭhākur kē hari siu kījai nēhā man aisā nēhu karēhu ॥2॥

कहु नानक छंत अनंत ठाकुर के हरि सिउ कीजै नेहा मन ऐसा नेहु करेहु ॥२॥

Says Nanak, chant the Hymns of the Infinite Lord Master; O my mind, love Him and enshrine such love for Him. ||2||

ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰ ਸਨੇਹੁ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਆਸ ਘਣੀ ਕਦਿ ਦਿਨੀਅਰੁ ਦੇਖੀਐ ॥

chakvī sūr sanēhu chitvai ās ghaṇī kadi dinīru dēkhīai ॥

चकवी सूर सनेहु चितवै आस घणी कदि दिनीअरु देखीऐ ॥

The chakvi bird is in love with the sun, and thinks of it constantly; her greatest longing is to behold the dawn.

ਕੋਕਿਲ ਅੰਬ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਚਵੈ ਸੁਹਾਵੀਆ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੀਜੀਐ ॥

kōkil amb parīti chavai suhāvīā man hari raṅgu kījīai ॥

कोकिल अंब परीति चवै सुहावीआ मन हरि रंगु कीजीऐ ॥

The cuckoo is in love with the mango tree, and sings so sweetly. O my mind, love the Lord in this way.

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੀਜੈ ਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਇਕ ਰਾਤੀ ਕੇ ਹਭਿ ਪਾਹੁਣਿਆ ॥

hari prīti karījai mānu na kījai ik rātī kē habhi pāhuṇiā ॥

हरि प्रीति करीजै मानु न कीजै इक राती के हभि पाहुणिआ ॥

Love the Lord, and do not take pride in yourself; everyone is a guest for a single night.

ਅਬ ਕਿਆ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇਓ ਮੋਹੁ ਰਚਾਇਓ ਨਾਗੇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥

ab kiā raṅgu lāiō mōhu rachāiō nāgē āvaṇ jāvṇiā ॥

अब किआ रंगु लाइओ मोहु रचाइओ नागे आवण जावणिआ ॥

Now, why are you entangled in pleasures, and engrossed in emotional attachment? Naked we come, and naked we go.

ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣੀ ਪੜੀਐ ਚਰਣੀ ਅਬ ਟੂਟਸਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਜੁ ਕਿਤੀਐ ॥

thiru sādhū sarṇī paṛīai charṇī ab ṭūṭsi mōhu ju kitīai ॥

थिरु साधू सरणी पड़ीऐ चरणी अब टूटसि मोहु जु कितीऐ ॥

Seek the eternal Sanctuary of the Holy and fall at their feet, and the attachments which you feel shall depart.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਛੰਤ ਦਇਆਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਕਬ ਦਿਨੀਅਰੁ ਦੇਖੀਐ ॥੩॥

kahu nānak chhant daiāl purakh kē man hari lāi parīti kab dinīru dēkhīai ॥3॥

कहु नानक छंत दइआल पुरख के मन हरि लाइ परीति कब दिनीअरु देखीऐ ॥३॥

Says Nanak, chant the Hymns of the Merciful Lord God, and enshrine love for the Lord, O my mind; otherwise, how will you come to behold the dawn? ||3||

ਨਿਸਿ ਕੁਰੰਕ ਜੈਸੇ ਨਾਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਹੀਉ ਡਿਵੈ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

nisi kuraṅk jaisē nād suṇi sravṇī hīu ḍivai man aisī prīti kījai ॥

निसि कुरंक जैसे नाद सुणि स्रवणी हीउ डिवै मन ऐसी प्रीति कीजै ॥

Like the deer in the night, who hears the sound of the bell and gives his heart - O my mind, love the Lord in this way.

ਜੈਸੀ ਤਰੁਣਿ ਭਤਾਰ ਉਰਝੀ ਪਿਰਹਿ ਸਿਵੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਲ ਦੀਜੈ ॥

jaisī taruṇi bhatār urjhī pirhi sivai ihu manu lāl dījai ॥

जैसी तरुणि भतार उरझी पिरहि सिवै इहु मनु लाल दीजै ॥

Like the wife, who is bound by love to her husband, and serves her beloved - like this, give your heart to the Beloved Lord.

ਮਨੁ ਲਾਲਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਭੋਗ ਕਰੀਜੈ ਹਭਿ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣੇ ॥

manu lālahi dījai bhōg karījai habhi khusīā raṅg māṇē ॥

मनु लालहि दीजै भोग करीजै हभि खुसीआ रंग माणे ॥

Give your heart to your Beloved Lord, and enjoy His bed, and enjoy all pleasure and bliss.

ਪਿਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਅਤਿ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਚਿਰਾਣੇ ॥

piru apnā pāiā raṅgu lālu baṇāiā ati miliō mitr chirāṇē ॥

पिरु अपना पाइआ रंगु लालु बणाइआ अति मिलिओ मित्र चिराणे ॥

I have obtained my Husband Lord, and I am dyed in the deep crimson color of His Love; after such a long time, I have met my Friend.

ਗੁਰੁ ਥੀਆ ਸਾਖੀ ਤਾ ਡਿਠਮੁ ਆਖੀ ਪਿਰ ਜੇਹਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ॥

guru thīā sākhī tā ḍiṭhmu ākhī pir jēhā avru na dīsai ॥

गुरु थीआ साखी ता डिठमु आखी पिर जेहा अवरु न दीसै ॥

When the Guru became my advocate, then I saw the Lord with my eyes. No one else looks like my Beloved Husband Lord.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਛੰਤ ਦਇਆਲ ਮੋਹਨ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਗਹੀਜੈ ਐਸੀ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੪॥

kahu nānak chhant daiāl mōhan kē man hari charaṇ gahījai aisī man prīti kījai ॥4॥1॥4॥

कहु नानक छंत दइआल मोहन के मन हरि चरण गहीजै ऐसी मन प्रीति कीजै ॥४॥१॥४॥

Says Nanak, chant the Hymns of the merciful and fascinating Lord, O mind. Grasp the lotus feet of the Lord, and enshrine such love for Him in your mind. ||4||1||4||
