ਜੈਸੇ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥

ਆਸਾ ਕਾਫੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੮ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ॥

āsā kāphī mahlā 1 gharu 8 asṭapdīā ॥

आसा काफी महला १ घरु ८ असटपदीआ ॥

Aasaa, Kaafee, First Mehl, Eighth House, Ashtapadees:

ਜੈਸੇ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਤੈਸੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥

jaisē gōili gōilī taisē saṃsārā ॥

जैसे गोइलि गोइली तैसे संसारा ॥

As the shepherd is in the field for only a short time, so is one in the world.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਾਂਧਹਿ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

kūṛu kamāvahi ādmī bāndhhi ghar bārā ॥1॥

कूड़ु कमावहि आदमी बांधहि घर बारा ॥१॥

Practicing falsehood, they build their homes. ||1||

ਜਾਗਹੁ ਜਾਗਹੁ ਸੂਤਿਹੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jāgahu jāgahu sūtihō chaliā vaṇjārā ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

जागहु जागहु सूतिहो चलिआ वणजारा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Wake up! Wake up! O sleepers, see that the travelling merchant is leaving. ||1||Pause||

ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਘਰ ਬਾਂਧੀਅਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਹਣਾ ਹੋਈ ॥

nīt nīt ghar bāndhīhi jē rahṇā hōī ॥

नीत नीत घर बांधीअहि जे रहणा होई ॥

Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever.

ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਚਲਸੀ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥

piṇḍu pavai jīu chalsī jē jāṇai kōī ॥2॥

पिंडु पवै जीउ चलसी जे जाणै कोई ॥२॥

The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2||

ਓਹੀ ਓਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਈ ॥

ōhī ōhī kiā karahu hai hōsī sōī ॥

ओही ओही किआ करहु है होसी सोई ॥

Why do you cry out and mourn for the dead? The Lord is, and shall always be.

ਤੁਮ ਰੋਵਹੁਗੇ ਓਸ ਨੋ ਤੁਮ੍‍ ਕਉ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਈ ॥੩॥

tum rōvhugē ōs nō tum‍ kau kauṇu rōī ॥3॥

तुम रोवहुगे ओस नो तुम्‍ कउ कउणु रोई ॥३॥

You mourn for that person, but who will mourn for you? ||3||

ਧੰਧਾ ਪਿਟਿਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਤੁਮ੍‍ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥

dhandhā piṭihu bhāīhō tum‍ kūṛu kamāvhu ॥

धंधा पिटिहु भाईहो तुम्‍ कूड़ु कमावहु ॥

You are engrossed in worldly entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny, and you are practicing falsehood.

ਓਹੁ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਤ ਹੀ ਤੁਮ੍‍ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵਹੁ ॥੪॥

ōhu na suṇaī kat hī tum‍ lōk suṇāvhu ॥4॥

ओहु न सुणई कत ही तुम्‍ लोक सुणावहु ॥४॥

The dead person does not hear anything at all; your cries are heard only by other people. ||4||

ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਤਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਾਗਾਏ ਸੋਈ ॥

jis tē sutā nānkā jāgāē sōī ॥

जिस ते सुता नानका जागाए सोई ॥

Only the Lord, who causes the mortal to sleep, O Nanak, can awaken him again.

ਜੇ ਘਰੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥

jē gharu būjhai āpaṇā tāṃ nīd na hōī ॥5॥

जे घरु बूझै आपणा तां नीद न होई ॥५॥

One who understands his true home, does not sleep. ||5||

ਜੇ ਚਲਦਾ ਲੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

jē chaldā lai chaliā kichhu sampai nālē ॥

जे चलदा लै चलिआ किछु संपै नाले ॥

If the departing mortal can take his wealth with him,

ਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੬॥

tā dhanu sañchhu dēkhi kai būjhhu bīchārē ॥6॥

ता धनु संचहु देखि कै बूझहु बीचारे ॥६॥

Then go ahead and gather wealth yourself. See this, reflect upon it, and understand. ||6||

ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਮਤ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੁ ॥

vaṇju karahu makhsūdu laihu mat pachhōtāvhu ॥

वणजु करहु मखसूदु लैहु मत पछोतावहु ॥

Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later.

ਅਉਗਣ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਹੁ ਐਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਾਵਹੁ ॥੭॥

augaṇ chhōḍhu guṇ karahu aisē tatu parāvhu ॥7॥

अउगण छोडहु गुण करहु ऐसे ततु परावहु ॥७॥

Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. ||7||

ਧਰਮੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਤੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥

dharmu bhūmi satu bīju kari aisī kiras kamāvhu ॥

धरमु भूमि सतु बीजु करि ऐसी किरस कमावहु ॥

Plant the seed of Truth in the soil of Dharmic faith, and practice such farming.

ਤਾਂ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਜਾਣੀਅਹੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੮॥

tāṃ vāpārī jāṇīahu lāhā lai jāvhu ॥8॥

तां वापारी जाणीअहु लाहा लै जावहु ॥८॥

Only then will you be known as a merchant, if you take your profits with you. ||8||

ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

karmu hōvai satiguru milai būjhai bīchārā ॥

करमु होवै सतिगुरु मिलै बूझै बीचारा ॥

If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥੯॥

nāmu vakhāṇai suṇē nāmu nāmē biuhārā ॥9॥

नामु वखाणै सुणे नामु नामे बिउहारा ॥९॥

Then, one chants the Naam, hears the Naam, and deals only in the Naam. ||9||

ਜਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਤੋਟਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਦੀ ਆਈ ॥

jiu lāhā tōṭā tivai vāṭ chaldī āī ॥

जिउ लाहा तोटा तिवै वाट चलदी आई ॥

As is the profit, so is the loss; this is the way of the world.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਾਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੦॥੧੩॥

jō tisu bhāvai nānkā sāī vaḍiāī ॥10॥13॥

जो तिसु भावै नानका साई वडिआई ॥१०॥१३॥

Whatever pleases His Will, O Nanak, is glory for me. ||10||13||
