satigur sachā pātishāh pātishāhāṃ pātishāh juhārī॥

सतिगुर सचा पातिशाह पातिशाहां पातिशाह जुहारी॥

I salute the true Guru who is the true king of kings.

ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚ ਖੰਡ ਹੈ ਆਇ ਝਰੋਖੈ ਖੋਲੈ ਬਾਰੀ॥

sādh saṅgti sac khaṇḍ hai āi jharōkhai khōlai bārī॥

साध संगति सच खंड है आइ झरोखै खोलै बारी॥

The Holy congregation is the abode of truth where the gates of mind are opened.

ਅਮਿਉਕਿਰਨ ਨਿਝਰ ਝਰੈ ਅਨਹਦਨਾਦ ਵਾਇਨ ਦਰਬਾਰੀ॥

amiukiran nijhar jharai anhadnād vāin darbārī॥

अमिउकिरन निझर झरै अनहदनाद वाइन दरबारी॥

The fountain of nectar flows here forever and the courtiers play the unstruck melody.

ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਜਲਸੈ ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪੀਵਣ ਭਾਰੀ॥

pātishāhāṃ dī majalsai piram piālā pīvaṇ bhārī॥

पातिशाहां दी मजलसै पिरम पिआला पीवण भारी॥

In the assembly of the kings it is very difficult to drink the cup of love.

ਸਾਕੀ ਹੋਇ ਪੀਆਵਣਾ ਉਲਸ਼ ਪਿਆਲੈ ਖਰੀ ਖੁਮਾਰੀ॥

sākī hōi pīāvṇā ulash piālai kharī khumārī॥

साकी होइ पीआवणा उलश पिआलै खरी खुमारी॥

The Guru becomes the beloved butler and makes one drink it, the delight of His tasted cup becomes multiplied.

ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤ ਭੈ ਚਲਣਾ ਮਸਤ ਅਲਮਸਤ ਸਦਾ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰੀ॥

bhāi bhagat bhai chalṇā masat almasat sadā hushiārī॥

भाइ भगत भै चलणा मसत अलमसत सदा हुशिआरी॥

Whosoever moves in the fear of loving devotion, he being carefree of the worldliness remains alert.

ਭਗਤ ਵਛਲ ਹੋਇ ਭਗਤ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

bhagat vachhal hōi bhagat bhaṇḍārī ॥1॥

भगत वछल होइ भगत भंडारी ॥१॥

Kind to the devotees, God, becomes their caretaker and fulfils all their desires.

सतिगुर सचा पातिशाहु पातिसाहा पातिसाहु सिरंदा॥

The true Guru is true emperor and He is creator of the emperor of the emperors.

ਸਚੈ ਤਥਤਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚ ਖੰਡਿ ਵਸੰਦਾ॥

sachai tathti nivāsu hai sādhsaṅgti sac khaṇḍi vasndā॥

सचै तथति निवासु है साधसंगति सच खंडि वसंदा॥

He sits on the throne of truth and resides in holy congregation, the abode of truth.

ਸਚੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਣੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਮੂਲਿ ਫਿਰੰਦਾ॥

sachu phurmāṇu nīsāṇu sachu sachā hukmu na mūli phirndā॥

सचु फुरमाणु नीसाणु सचु सचा हुकमु न मूलि फिरंदा॥

Truth is His mark and truth He utters and His command is irrefutable.

ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਟਕਸਾਲ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਹੁਇ ੁਸਬਦ ਮਿਲੰਦਾ॥

sachu sabdu ṭaksāl sachu gur tē gur hui usbad milndā॥

सचु सबदु टकसाल सचु गुर ते गुर हुइ ुसबद मिलंदा॥

He whose Word is true and whose treasure is true, is attainable in the form of the word of the Guru.

ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਭਾਵੰਦਾ॥

sachī bhagti bhaṇḍār sachu rāg ratan kīrtanu bhāvndā॥

सची भगति भंडार सचु राग रतन कीरतनु भावंदा॥

His devotion is true, His warehouse is true and He likes love and praise.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਦੋਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਕਰੰਦਾ॥

gurmukhi sachā panthu hai sachu dōhī sachu rāju karandā॥

गुरमुखि सचा पंथु है सचु दोही सचु राजु करंदा॥

The way of the gurmukhs is also true, their slogan is truth and their kingdom is also the kingdom of truth.

ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉ ਚੜ੍ਹੰਦਾ ॥੧॥

vīh ikīh chaṛhāu chaṛhndā ॥1॥

वीह इकीह चड़्हाउ चड़्हंदा ॥१॥

The treader on this path, crossing the world goes on to meet the Lord.

ਧ੍ਰੂ ਹਸਦਾ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ ਕਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਿਉ ਕੁਛੜ ਲੀਤਾ॥

dhrū hasdā ghar āiā kar piār piu kuchhaṛ lītā॥

ध्रू हसदा घर आइआ कर पिआर पिउ कुछड़ लीता॥

Boy Dhru came smiling to his house (palace) and his father full of love put him into his lap.

ਬਾਹੋਂ ਪਕੜ ਉਠਾਲਿਆ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੋਸ ਮਤ੍ਰੇਈ ਕੀਤਾ॥

bāhōṃ pakaṛ uṭhāliā man vic rōs matrēī kītā॥

बाहों पकड़ उठालिआ मन विच रोस मत्रेई कीता॥

Seeing this, the stepmother got angry and catching hold of his arm pushed him out of the lap of the father (the king).

ਡੁਡਹੁਲਿਕਾ ਮਾਂ ਪੁਛੇ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਵਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਰੀਤਾ॥

ḍuḍhulikā māṃ puchhē tūṃ sāvāṇī hai ki sarītā॥

डुडहुलिका मां पुछे तूं सावाणी है कि सरीता॥

Tearful with fear he asked his mother whether she was a queen or a maidservant?

ਸਾਵਾਣੀ ਹਾਂ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੀਤਾ॥

sāvāṇī hāṃ janam dī nām na bhagtī karam driṛītā॥

सावाणी हां जनम दी नाम न भगती करम द्रिड़ीता॥

O son! (said she) I was born queen but I did not remember God and did not undertake acts of devotion (and this is the reason of yours and mine plight).

ਕਿਸ ਉਦੱਮ ਤੇ ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਤ੍ਰ ੂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਹੋਵਨ ਮੀਤਾ॥

kis udamm tē rāj milai satr ū tē sabh hōvan mītā॥

किस उदॱम ते राज मिलै सत्र ू ते सभ होवन मीता॥

With that effort can the kingdom be had (asked Dhru) and how can enemies turn friends?

ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਜਿੰਦੂ ਹੋਈਐ ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ॥

parmēshar ārādhīai jindū hōīai patit punītā॥

परमेशर आराधीऐ जिंदू होईऐ पतित पुनीता॥

The Lord should be worshipped and thus the sinners also become sacred ones (said the mother).

ਬਾਹਰ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਤਪ ਮਨ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹੋਇ ਅਤੀਤਾ॥

bāhar chaliā karan tap man bairāgī hōi atītā॥

बाहर चलिआ करन तप मन बैरागी होइ अतीता॥

Listening to this and getting totally detached in his mind Dhru went out (to the jungle) to undertake rigorous discipline.

ਨਾਰਦਮੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਿਆ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਅਮਿਉਰਸ ਪੀਤਾ॥

nārdamuni updēshiā nām nidhān amiuras pītā॥

नारदमुनि उपदेशिआ नाम निधान अमिउरस पीता॥

On the way, sage Narad taught him the technique of devotion and Dhru quaffed the nectar from the ocean of the Name of the Lord.

ਪਿਛਹੁ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਅਬਚਲ ਰਾਜ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤਾ॥

pichhhu rājē sadiā abchal rāj karahu nit nītā॥

पिछहु राजे सदिआ अबचल राज करहु नित नीता॥

(After some time) King (Uttanpad) called him back and asked him (Dhru) to rule forever.

ਹਾਰ ਚਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਜਗ ਜੀਤਾ ॥੧॥

hār chalē gurmukh jag jītā ॥1॥

हार चले गुरमुख जग जीता ॥१॥

The gurmukhs who seem to be losing i.e. who turn their faces from the evil propensities, conquer the world.

ਵਾਲਹੁ ਨਿਕੀ ਆਖੀਐ ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਤਿਖੀ॥

vālhu nikī ākhīai khaṇḍē dhārhu suṇīai tikhī॥

वालहु निकी आखीऐ खंडे धारहु सुणीऐ तिखी॥

Sikh spirit is subtler than a trichome and sharper than the edge of sword.

ਆਖਣਿ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਐ ਲੇਖ ਅਲੇਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਿਖੀ॥

ākhṇi ākhi na sakīai lēkh alēkh na jāī likhī॥

आखणि आखि न सकीऐ लेख अलेख न जाई लिखी॥

Nothing can be said or explained about it and its indescribable account cannot be written.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਅਪੜਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਇਕਤੁ ਵਿਖੀ॥

gurmukhi panthu vakhāṇīai apṛi na sakai iktu vikhī॥

गुरमुखि पंथु वखाणीऐ अपड़ि न सकै इकतु विखी॥

Defined as the way of the Gurmukhs, it cannot be attained by a single step.

ਸਿਲ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਚਟਣੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਲਖ ਅਮਿਅ ਰਸ ਇਖੀ॥

sil alūṇī chaṭṇī tuli na lakh amia ras ikhī॥

सिल अलूणी चटणी तुलि न लख अमिअ रस इखी॥

It is like licking a tasteless stone but the joy of even the juice of millions of sweet sugar cane, cannot be compared with it.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਜੁ ਬਿਰਖੀ॥

gurmukhi sukh phalu pāiā bhāi bhagti virlī ju birkhī॥

गुरमुखि सुख फलु पाइआ भाइ भगति विरली जु बिरखी॥

The gurmukhs have attained the pleasure-fruit of loving devotion which grows on rare trees.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ॥

satigur tuṭhai pāīai sādhsaṅgti gurmati gursikhī॥

सतिगुर तुठै पाईऐ साधसंगति गुरमति गुरसिखी॥

By the grace of the true Guru, following the wisdom of the Guru and in the holy congregation alone the Sikh spirit is attained.

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਭਿਖਕ ਭਿਖੀ ॥੧॥

chāri padārath bhikhak bhikhī ॥1॥

चारि पदारथ भिखक भिखी ॥१॥

Four ideals (dharma, arth, katm and rooks) of life are begged by the beggars.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴसतिगुरप्रसादि ॥

ਓਅੰਕਾਰ ਅਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਪਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰ ਧਾਰੇ॥

ōaṅkār akār kar pavaṇ pāṇī baisntar dhārē॥

ओअंकार अकार कर पवण पाणी बैसंतर धारे॥

Oankar transforming into forms created air, water and fire.

ਧਰਤ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਛੋੜੀਅਨੁ ਚੰਦ ਸੂਰ ਦੁਇ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ॥

dharat akāsh vichhōṛīnu chand sūr dui jōti savārē॥

धरत अकाश विछोड़ीअनु चंद सूर दुइ जोति सवारे॥

Then separating earth and sky He threw two flames of sun and moon in between them.

ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰ ਬੰਧਾਨ ਕਰ ਲੱਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੂਨਿ ਦੁਆਰੇ॥

khāṇī chār bandhān kar lakkh chaurāsīh jūni duārē॥

खाणी चार बंधान कर लॱख चउरासीह जूनि दुआरे॥

Further creating the four mines of life He created eighty four lacs of species and their animalcules.

ਇਕਸ ਇਕਸ ਜੂਨਿ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਅਜੰਤ ਅਨਗਨਤ ਅਪਾਰੇ॥

ikas ikas jūni vic jīajant anganat apārē॥

इकस इकस जूनि विच जीअजंत अनगनत अपारे॥

In each species further are born myriads of creatures.

ਮਾਨਸ ਜਨਮ ਦੁਲੰਭ ਹੈ ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣ ਉਧਾਰੇ॥

mānas janam dulambh hai saphal janam gur saraṇ udhārē॥

मानस जनम दुलंभ है सफल जनम गुर सरण उधारे॥

Among them all, the human birth is the rare one. One should, in this very Birth, liberate himself by surrendering before the Guru.

ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗ ਗੁਰੁਸਬਦ ਸੁਣ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤ ਗੁਰ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ॥

sādh saṅg gurusbad suṇ bhāi bhagat gur gyān bīchārē॥

साध संग गुरुसबद सुण भाइ भगत गुर ग्यान बीचारे॥

One must go to holy congregation; the consciousness should be merged in the word of the Guru and cultivating only a loving devotion, one should undertake to follow the path shown by the Guru.

ਪਰ ਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥

par upkārī gurū piārē ॥1॥

पर उपकारी गुरू पिआरे ॥१॥

The man by becoming altruist becomes beloved of the Guru.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴसतिगुरप्रसादि ॥

ਤੀਰਥ ਮੰਝਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਅਪਤੀਣਾ॥

tīrath mañjhi nivāsu hai bagulā aptīṇā॥

तीरथ मंझि निवासु है बगुला अपतीणा॥

ਲਵੈ ਬਬੀਹਾ ਵਰਸਦੈ ਜਲ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਪੀਣਾ॥

lavai babīhā varsadai jal jāi na pīṇā॥

लवै बबीहा वरसदै जल जाइ न पीणा॥

ਵਾਂਸੁ ਸੁਗੰਧਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਪਰਮਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੀਣਾ॥

vāṃsu sugndhi na hōvaī parmal saṅgi līṇā॥

वांसु सुगंधि न होवई परमल संगि लीणा॥

ਘੁਘੂ ਸੁਝੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਰਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀਣਾ॥

ghughū sujhu na sujhaī karamā dā hīṇā॥

घुघू सुझु न सुझई करमा दा हीणा॥

ਨਾਭਿ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਮਿਰਗ ਦੇ ਵਤੈ ਓਡੀਣਾ॥

nābhi kathūrī mirag dē vatai ōḍīṇā॥

नाभि कथूरी मिरग दे वतै ओडीणा॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲੈ ਮੀਣਾ ॥੧॥

satigur sachā pātisāhu muhu kālai mīṇā ॥1॥

सतिगुर सचा पातिसाहु मुहु कालै मीणा ॥१॥
