ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

गउड़ी गुआरेरी महला १ ॥

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

haumai kartiā nah sukhu hōi ॥

हउमै करतिआ नह सुखु होइ ॥

Acting in egotism, peace is not obtained.

ਮਨਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

manmati jhūṭhī sachā sōi ॥

मनमति झूठी सचा सोइ ॥

The intellect of the mind is false; only the Lord is True.

ਸਗਲ ਬਿਗੂਤੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੋਇ ॥

sagal bigūtē bhāvai dōi ॥

सगल बिगूते भावै दोइ ॥

All who love duality are ruined.

ਸੋ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

sō kamāvai dhuri likhiā hōi ॥1॥

सो कमावै धुरि लिखिआ होइ ॥१॥

People act as they are pre-ordained. ||1||

ਐਸਾ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜੂਆਰੀ ॥

aisā jagu dēkhiā jūārī ॥

ऐसा जगु देखिआ जूआरी ॥

I have seen the world to be such a gambler;

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

sabhi sukh māgai nāmu bisārī ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

सभि सुख मागै नामु बिसारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

All beg for peace, but they forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਤਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

adisṭu disai tā kahiā jāi ॥

अदिसटु दिसै ता कहिआ जाइ ॥

If the Unseen Lord could be seen, then He could be described.

ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਕਹਣਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

binu dēkhē kahṇā birthā jāi ॥

बिनु देखे कहणा बिरथा जाइ ॥

Without seeing Him, all descriptions are useless.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

gurmukhi dīsai sahji subhāi ॥

गुरमुखि दीसै सहजि सुभाइ ॥

The Gurmukh sees Him with intuitive ease.

ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

sēvā surti ēk liv lāi ॥2॥

सेवा सुरति एक लिव लाइ ॥२॥

So serve the One Lord, with loving awareness. ||2||

ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਂਗਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗਲ ਹੋਇ ॥

sukhu māṅgat dukhu āgal hōi ॥

सुखु मांगत दुखु आगल होइ ॥

People beg for peace, but they receive severe pain.

ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥

sagal vikārī hāru parōi ॥

सगल विकारी हारु परोइ ॥

They are all weaving a wreath of corruption.

ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

ēk binā jhūṭhē mukti na hōi ॥

एक बिना झूठे मुकति न होइ ॥

You are false - without the One, there is no liberation.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥

kari kari karatā dēkhai sōi ॥3॥

करि करि करता देखै सोइ ॥३॥

The Creator created the creation, and He watches over it. ||3||

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

trisnā agni sabdi bujhāē ॥

त्रिसना अगनि सबदि बुझाए ॥

The fire of desire is quenched by the Word of the Shabad.

ਦੂਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥

dūjā bharmu sahji subhāē ॥

दूजा भरमु सहजि सुभाए ॥

Duality and doubt are automatically eliminated.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

gurmatī nāmu ridai vasāē ॥

गुरमती नामु रिदै वसाए ॥

Following the Guru's Teachings, the Naam abides in the heart.

ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥

sāchī bāṇī hari guṇ gāē ॥4॥

साची बाणी हरि गुण गाए ॥४॥

Through the True Word of His Bani, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||

ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਉ ॥

tan mahi sāchō gurmukhi bhāu ॥

तन महि साचो गुरमुखि भाउ ॥

The True Lord abides within the body of that Gurmukh who enshrines love for Him.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਠਾਉ ॥

nām binā nāhī nij ṭhāu ॥

नाम बिना नाही निज ठाउ ॥

Without the Naam, none obtain their own place.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰਾਇਣ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥

prēm parāiṇ prītam rāu ॥

प्रेम पराइण प्रीतम राउ ॥

The Beloved Lord King is dedicated to love.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੫॥

nadri karē tā būjhai nāu ॥5॥

नदरि करे ता बूझै नाउ ॥५॥

If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then we realize His Name. ||5||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥

māiā mōhu sarab jañjālā ॥

माइआ मोहु सरब जंजाला ॥

Emotional attachment to Maya is total entanglement.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਕੁਛਿਤ ਬਿਕਰਾਲਾ ॥

manmukh kuchīl kuchhit bikrālā ॥

मनमुख कुचील कुछित बिकराला ॥

The self-willed manmukh is filthy, cursed and dreadful.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥

satiguru sēvē chūkai jañjālā ॥

सतिगुरु सेवे चूकै जंजाला ॥

Serving the True Guru, these entanglements are ended.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਲਾ ॥੬॥

ammrit nāmu sadā sukhu nālā ॥6॥

अंम्रित नामु सदा सुखु नाला ॥६॥

In the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, you shall abide in lasting peace. ||6||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥

gurmukhi būjhai ēk liv lāē ॥

गुरमुखि बूझै एक लिव लाए ॥

The Gurmukhs understand the One Lord, and enshrine love for Him.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥

nij ghari vāsai sāchi samāē ॥

निज घरि वासै साचि समाए ॥

They dwell in the home of their own inner beings, and merge in the True Lord.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥

jammṇu marṇā ṭhāki rahāē ॥

जंमणु मरणा ठाकि रहाए ॥

The cycle of birth and death is ended.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥

pūrē gur tē ih mati pāē ॥7॥

पूरे गुर ते इह मति पाए ॥७॥

This understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||7||

ਕਥਨੀ ਕਥਉ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਓਰੁ ॥

kathnī kathau na āvai ōru ॥

कथनी कथउ न आवै ओरु ॥

Speaking the speech, there is no end to it.

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਛਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਰੁ ਹੋਰੁ ॥

guru puchhi dēkhiā nāhī daru hōru ॥

गुरु पुछि देखिआ नाही दरु होरु ॥

I have consulted the Guru, and I have seen that there is no other door than His.

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥

dukhu sukhu bhāṇai tisai rajāi ॥

दुखु सुखु भाणै तिसै रजाइ ॥

Pain and pleasure reside in the Pleasure of His Will and His Command.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੮॥੪॥

nānku nīchhu kahai liv lāi ॥8॥4॥

नानकु नीचु कहै लिव लाइ ॥८॥४॥

Nanak, the lowly, says embrace love for the Lord. ||8||4||
