ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

hari sā mītu nāhī mai kōī ॥

हरि सा मीतु नाही मै कोई ॥

I have no other friend like the Lord.

ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ॥

jini tanu manu dīā surti samōī ॥

जिनि तनु मनु दीआ सुरति समोई ॥

He gave me body and mind, and infused consciousness into my being.

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

sarab jīā pratipāli samālē sō antri dānā bīnā hē ॥1॥

सरब जीआ प्रतिपालि समाले सो अंतरि दाना बीना हे ॥१॥

He cherishes and cares for all beings; He is deep within, the wise, all-knowing Lord. ||1||

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਹੰਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

guru sarvaru ham haṃs piārē ॥

गुरु सरवरु हम हंस पिआरे ॥

The Guru is the sacred pool, and I am His beloved swan.

ਸਾਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਲਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥

sāgar mahi ratan lāl bahu sārē ॥

सागर महि रतन लाल बहु सारे ॥

In the ocean, there are so many jewels and rubies.

ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

mōtī māṇak hīrā hari jasu gāvat manu tanu bhīnā hē ॥2॥

मोती माणक हीरा हरि जसु गावत मनु तनु भीना हे ॥२॥

The Lord's Praises are pearls, gems and diamonds. Singing His Praises, my mind and body are drenched with His Love. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥

hari agam agāhu agādhi nirālā ॥

हरि अगम अगाहु अगाधि निराला ॥

The Lord is inaccessible, inscrutable, unfathomable and unattached.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥

hari antu na pāīai gur gōpālā ॥

हरि अंतु न पाईऐ गुर गोपाला ॥

The Lord's limits cannot be found; the Guru is the Lord of the World.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਰੰਗਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

satigur mati tārē tārṇahārā mēli laē raṅgi līnā hē ॥3॥

सतिगुर मति तारे तारणहारा मेलि लए रंगि लीना हे ॥३॥

Through the Teachings of the True Guru, the Lord carries us across to the other side. He unites in His Union those who are colored by His Love. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ॥

satigur bājhhu mukti kinēhī ॥

सतिगुर बाझहु मुकति किनेही ॥

Without the True Guru, how can anyone be liberated?

ਓਹੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥

ōhu ādi jugādī rām sanēhī ॥

ओहु आदि जुगादी राम सनेही ॥

He has been the Friend of the Lord, from the very beginning of time, and all throughout the ages.

ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

dargah mukti karē kari kirpā bakhsē avguṇ kīnā hē ॥4॥

दरगह मुकति करे करि किरपा बखसे अवगुण कीना हे ॥४॥

By His Grace, He grants liberation in His Court; He forgives them for their sins. ||4||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥

satiguru dātā mukti karāē ॥

सतिगुरु दाता मुकति कराए ॥

The True Guru, the Giver, grants liberation;

ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਏ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

sabhi rōg gavāē ammrit rasu pāē ॥

सभि रोग गवाए अंम्रित रसु पाए ॥

All diseases are eradicated, and one is blessed with the Ambrosial Nectar.

ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਠਰੁ ਸੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

jamu jāgāti nāhī karu lāgai jisu agni bujhī ṭharu sīnā hē ॥5॥

जमु जागाति नाही करु लागै जिसु अगनि बुझी ठरु सीना हे ॥५॥

Death, the tax collector, does not impose any tax on one whose inner fire has been put out, whose heart is cool and tranquil. ||5||

ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

kāiā haṃs prīti bahu dhārī ॥

काइआ हंस प्रीति बहु धारी ॥

The body has developed a great love for the soul-swan.

ਓਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਓਹ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

ōhu jōgī purkhu ōh sundri nārī ॥

ओहु जोगी पुरखु ओह सुंदरि नारी ॥

He is a Yogi, and she is a beautiful woman.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਗੈ ਚੋਜ ਬਿਨੋਦੀ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤੈ ਮਤਾ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

ahinisi bhōgai chōj binōdī uṭhi chaltai matā na kīnā hē ॥6॥

अहिनिसि भोगै चोज बिनोदी उठि चलतै मता न कीना हे ॥६॥

Day and night, he enjoys her with delight, and then he arises and departs without consulting her. ||6||

ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛਾਜੈ ॥

srisṭi upāi rahē prabh chhājai ॥

स्रिसटि उपाइ रहे प्रभ छाजै ॥

Creating the Universe, God remains diffused throughout it.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥

pauṇ pāṇī baisntaru gājai ॥

पउण पाणी बैसंतरु गाजै ॥

In the wind, water and fire, He vibrates and resounds.

ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

manūā ḍōlai dūt saṅgti mili sō pāē jō kichhu kīnā hē ॥7॥

मनूआ डोलै दूत संगति मिलि सो पाए जो किछु कीना हे ॥७॥

The mind wavers, keeping company with evil passions; one obtains the rewards of his own actions. ||7||

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੋਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੀਐ ॥

nāmu visāri dōkh dukh sahīai ॥

नामु विसारि दोख दुख सहीऐ ॥

Forgetting the Naam, one suffers the misery of his evil ways.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਚਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ॥

hukmu bhaiā chalṇā kiu rahīai ॥

हुकमु भइआ चलणा किउ रहीऐ ॥

When the order to depart is issued, how can he remain here?

ਨਰਕ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

narak kūp mahi gōtē khāvai jiu jal tē bāhri mīnā hē ॥8॥

नरक कूप महि गोते खावै जिउ जल ते बाहरि मीना हे ॥८॥

He falls into the pit of hell, and suffers like a fish out of water. ||8||

ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਨਰਕ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਭੋਗਾਈਐ ॥

chaurāsīh narak sāktu bhōgāīai ॥

चउरासीह नरक साकतु भोगाईऐ ॥

The faithless cynic has to endure 8.4 million hellish incarnations.

ਜੈਸਾ ਕੀਚੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

jaisā kīchai taisō pāīai ॥

जैसा कीचै तैसो पाईऐ ॥

As he acts, so does he suffer.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਗ੍ਰਸਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

satigur bājhhu mukti na hōī kirti bādhā grasi dīnā hē ॥9॥

सतिगुर बाझहु मुकति न होई किरति बाधा ग्रसि दीना हे ॥९॥

Without the True Guru, there is no liberation. Bound and gagged by his own actions, he is helpless. ||9||

ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਗਲੀ ਅਤਿ ਭੀੜੀ ॥

khaṇḍē dhār galī ati bhīṛī ॥

खंडे धार गली अति भीड़ी ॥

This path is very narrow, like the sharp edge of a sword.

ਲੇਖਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਉ ਪੀੜੀ ॥

lēkhā lījai til jiu pīṛī ॥

लेखा लीजै तिल जिउ पीड़ी ॥

When his account is read, he shall be crushed like the sesame seed in the mill.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

māt pitā kalatr sut bēlī nāhī binu hari ras mukti na kīnā hē ॥10॥

मात पिता कलत्र सुत बेली नाही बिनु हरि रस मुकति न कीना हे ॥१०॥

Mother, father, spouse and child - none is anyone's friend in the end. Without the Lord's Love, no one is liberated. ||10||

ਮੀਤ ਸਖੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

mīt sakhē kētē jag māhī ॥

मीत सखे केते जग माही ॥

You may have many friends and companions in the world,

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

binu gur parmēsar kōī nāhī ॥

बिनु गुर परमेसर कोई नाही ॥

But without the Guru, the Transcendent Lord Incarnate, there is no one at all.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

gur kī sēvā mukti parāiṇi andinu kīrtanu kīnā hē ॥11॥

गुर की सेवा मुकति पराइणि अनदिनु कीरतनु कीना हे ॥११॥

Service to the Guru is the way to liberation. Night and day, sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||11||

ਕੂੜੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥

kūṛu chhōḍi sāchē kau dhāvhu ॥

कूड़ु छोडि साचे कउ धावहु ॥

Abandon falsehood, and pursue the Truth,

ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥

jō ichhhu sōī phalu pāvhu ॥

जो इछहु सोई फलु पावहु ॥

And you shall obtain the fruits of your desires.

ਸਾਚ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

sāc vakhar kē vāpārī virlē lai lāhā saudā kīnā hē ॥12॥

साच वखर के वापारी विरले लै लाहा सउदा कीना हे ॥१२॥

Very few are those who trade in the merchandise of Truth. Those who deal in it, obtain the true profit. ||12||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ॥

hari hari nāmu vakhru lai chalhu ॥

हरि हरि नामु वखरु लै चलहु ॥

Depart with the merchandise of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਹਲਹੁ ॥

darsanu pāvhu sahji mahlahu ॥

दरसनु पावहु सहजि महलहु ॥

And you shall intuitively obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, in the Mansion of His Presence.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਚੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

gurmukhi khōji lahhi jan pūrē iu samdarsī chīnā hē ॥13॥

गुरमुखि खोजि लहहि जन पूरे इउ समदरसी चीना हे ॥१३॥

The Gurmukhs search for Him and find Him; they are the perfect humble beings. In this way, they see Him, who looks upon all alike. ||13||

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

prabh bēant gurmati kō pāvahi ॥

प्रभ बेअंत गुरमति को पावहि ॥

God is endless; following the Guru's Teachings, some find Him.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ॥

gur kai sabdi man kau samjhāvahi ॥

गुर कै सबदि मन कउ समझावहि ॥

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they instruct their minds.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਇਉ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੈ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

satigur kī bāṇī sati sati kari mānhu iu ātam rāmai līnā hē ॥14॥

सतिगुर की बाणी सति सति करि मानहु इउ आतम रामै लीना हे ॥१४॥

Accept as True, Perfectly True, the Word of the True Guru's Bani. In this way, you shall merge in the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||14||

ਨਾਰਦ ਸਾਰਦ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥

nārad sārad sēvak tērē ॥

नारद सारद सेवक तेरे ॥

Naarad and Saraswati are Your servants.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥

tribhvaṇi sēvak vaḍhu vaḍērē ॥

त्रिभवणि सेवक वडहु वडेरे ॥

Your servants are the greatest of the great, throughout the three worlds.

ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

sabh tērī kudrati tū siri siri dātā sabhu tērō kārṇu kīnā hē ॥15॥

सभ तेरी कुदरति तू सिरि सिरि दाता सभु तेरो कारणु कीना हे ॥१५॥

Your creative power permeates all; You are the Great Giver of all. You created the whole creation. ||15||

ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਵਾਏ ॥

iki dari sēvhi dardu vāē ॥

इकि दरि सेवहि दरदु वाए ॥

Some serve at Your Door, and their sufferings are dispelled.

ਓਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਛਡਾਏ ॥

ōi dargah paidhē satigurū chhaḍāē ॥

ओइ दरगह पैधे सतिगुरू छडाए ॥

They are robed with honor in the Court of the Lord, and emancipated by the True Guru.

ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚਲਣਿ ਨ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥

haumai bandhan satiguri tōṛē chitu chañclu chalṇi na dīnā hē ॥16॥

हउमै बंधन सतिगुरि तोड़े चितु चंचलु चलणि न दीना हे ॥१६॥

The True Guru breaks the bonds of egotism, and restrains the fickle consciousness. ||16||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਈ ॥

satigur milhu chīnhu bidhi sāī ॥

सतिगुर मिलहु चीनहु बिधि साई ॥

Meet the True Guru, and search for the way,

ਜਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥

jitu prabhu pāvhu gaṇat na kāī ॥

जितु प्रभु पावहु गणत न काई ॥

By which you may find God, and not have to answer for your account.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੨॥੮॥

haumai māri karahu gur sēvā jan nānak hari raṅgi bhīnā hē ॥17॥2॥8॥

हउमै मारि करहु गुर सेवा जन नानक हरि रंगि भीना हे ॥१७॥२॥८॥

Subdue your egotism, and serve the Guru; O servant Nanak, you shall be drenched with the Lord's Love. ||17||2||8||
