ਏਕੁ ਕੋਟੁ ਪੰਚ ਸਿਕਦਾਰਾ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਹਾਲਾ ॥

ਸੂਹੀ ਲਲਿਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀਉ ॥

ਏਕੁ ਕੋਟੁ ਪੰਚ ਸਿਕਦਾਰਾ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਹਾਲਾ ॥

ēku kōṭu pañc sikdārā pañchē māghi hālā ॥

एकु कोटु पंच सिकदारा पंचे मागहि हाला ॥

In the one fortress of the body, there are five rulers, and all five demand payment of taxes.

ਜਿਮੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕਿਸੀ ਕੀ ਬੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਦੇਨੁ ਦੁਖਾਲਾ ॥੧॥

jimī nāhī mai kisī kī bōī aisā dēnu dukhālā ॥1॥

जिमी नाही मै किसी की बोई ऐसा देनु दुखाला ॥१॥

I have not farmed anyone's land, so such payment is difficult for me to pay. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗਾ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਨੀਤਿ ਡਸੈ ਪਟਵਾਰੀ ॥

hari kē lōgā mō kau nīti ḍasai paṭvārī ॥

हरि के लोगा मो कउ नीति डसै पटवारी ॥

O people of the Lord, the tax-collector is constantly torturing me!

ਊਪਰਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਕਰਿ ਮੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਹਉ ਲੀਆ ਉਬਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ūpri bhujā kari mai gur pahi pukāriā tini hau līā ubārī ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

ऊपरि भुजा करि मै गुर पहि पुकारिआ तिनि हउ लीआ उबारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raising my arms up, I complained to my Guru, and He has saved me. ||1||Pause||

ਨਉ ਡਾਡੀ ਦਸ ਮੁੰਸਫ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਰਈਅਤਿ ਬਸਨ ਨ ਦੇਹੀ ॥

nau ḍāḍī das muṃsaph dhāvhi raīati basan na dēhī ॥

नउ डाडी दस मुंसफ धावहि रईअति बसन न देही ॥

The nine tax-assessors and the ten magistrates go out; they do not allow their subjects to live in peace.

ਡੋਰੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਾਪਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਸਟਾਲਾ ਲੇਹੀ ॥੨॥

ḍōrī pūrī māphi nāhī bahu bisṭālā lēhī ॥2॥

डोरी पूरी मापहि नाही बहु बिसटाला लेही ॥२॥

They do not measure with a full tape, and they take huge amounts in bribes. ||2||

ਬਹਤਰਿ ਘਰ ਇਕੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਉਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਾਈ ॥

bahtari ghar iku purkhu samāiā uni dīā nāmu likhāī ॥

बहतरि घर इकु पुरखु समाइआ उनि दीआ नामु लिखाई ॥

The One Lord is contained in the seventy-two chambers of the body, and He has written off my account.

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਾ ਦਫਤਰੁ ਸੋਧਿਆ ਬਾਕੀ ਰਿਜਮ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੩॥

dharam rāi kā daphtaru sōdhiā bākī rijam na kāī ॥3॥

धरम राइ का दफतरु सोधिआ बाकी रिजम न काई ॥३॥

The records of the Righteous Judge of Dharma have been searched, and I owe absolutely nothing. ||3||

ਸੰਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਤਿ ਕੋਈ ਨਿੰਦਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਏਕੋੁ ॥

santā kau mati kōī nindhu sant rāmu hai ēkō ॥

संता कउ मति कोई निंदहु संत रामु है एकुो ॥

Let no one slander the Saints, because the Saints and the Lord are as one.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਮੈ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਬਿਬੇਕੁੋ ॥੪॥੫॥

kahu kabīr mai sō guru pāiā jā kā nāu bibēkō ॥4॥5॥

कहु कबीर मै सो गुरु पाइआ जा का नाउ बिबेकुो ॥४॥५॥

Says Kabeer, I have found that Guru, whose Name is Clear Understanding. ||4||5||
