ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਸਮਝੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਇਆਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

Tukhaari, First Mehl:

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਸਮਝੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਇਆਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā tū samjhu achēt iāṇiā rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ तू समझु अचेत इआणिआ राम ॥

O my ignorant, unconscious mind, reform yourself.

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਛਡਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā chhaḍi avagaṇ guṇī samāṇiā rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ छडि अवगण गुणी समाणिआ राम ॥

O my mind, leave behind your faults and demerits, and be absorbed in virtue.

ਬਹੁ ਸਾਦ ਲੁਭਾਣੇ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਮੇਲਾ ॥

bahu sād lubhāṇē kirat kamāṇē vichhuṛiā nahī mēlā ॥

बहु साद लुभाणे किरत कमाणे विछुड़िआ नही मेला ॥

You are deluded by so many flavors and pleasures, and you act in such confusion. You are separated, and you will not meet your Lord.

ਕਿਉ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਜਮ ਡਰਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥

kiu dutru tarīai jam ḍari marīai jam kā panthu duhēlā ॥

किउ दुतरु तरीऐ जम डरि मरीऐ जम का पंथु दुहेला ॥

How can the impassible world-ocean be crossed? The fear of the Messenger of Death is deadly. The path of Death is agonizingly painful.

ਮਨਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤਾ ਸਾਝ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤਾ ਅਵਘਟਿ ਰੁਧਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ॥

mani rāmu nahī jātā sājh prabhātā avghaṭi rudhā kiā karē ॥

मनि रामु नही जाता साझ प्रभाता अवघटि रुधा किआ करे ॥

The mortal does not know the Lord in the evening, or in the morning; trapped on the treacherous path, what will he do then?

ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵੈ ਨਰਹਰੇ ॥੧॥

bandhni bādhiā in bidhi chhūṭai gurmukhi sēvai narharē ॥1॥

बंधनि बाधिआ इन बिधि छूटै गुरमुखि सेवै नरहरे ॥१॥

Bound in bondage, he is released only by this method: as Gurmukh, serve the Lord. ||1||

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਛੋਡਿ ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā tū chhōḍi āl jañjālā rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ तू छोडि आल जंजाला राम ॥

O my mind, abandon your household entanglements.

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā hari sēvhu purkhu nirālā rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ हरि सेवहु पुरखु निराला राम ॥

O my mind, serve the Lord, the Primal, Detached Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥

hari simri ēkṅkāru sāchā sabhu jagtu jinni upāiā ॥

हरि सिमरि एकंकारु साचा सभु जगतु जिंनि उपाइआ ॥

Meditate in remembrance on the One Universal Creator; the True Lord created the entire Universe.

ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਜਗਤਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

pauṇu pāṇī agni bādhē guri khēlu jagti dikhāiā ॥

पउणु पाणी अगनि बाधे गुरि खेलु जगति दिखाइआ ॥

The Guru controls the air, water and fire; He has staged the drama of the world.

ਆਚਾਰਿ ਤੂ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਜਪ ਤਪੋ ॥

āchāri tū vīchāri āpē hari nāmu sañjam jap tapō ॥

आचारि तू वीचारि आपे हरि नामु संजम जप तपो ॥

Reflect on your own self, and so practice good conduct; chant the Name of the Lord as your self-discipline and meditation.

ਸਖਾ ਸੈਨੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਜਪੁ ਜਪੋ ॥੨॥

sakhā sainu piāru prītmu nāmu hari kā japu japō ॥2॥

सखा सैनु पिआरु प्रीतमु नामु हरि का जपु जपो ॥२॥

The Name of the Lord is your Companion, Friend and Dear Beloved; chant it, and meditate on it. ||2||

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੁ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵਹੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā tū thiru rahu chōṭ na khāvahī rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ तू थिरु रहु चोट न खावही राम ॥

O my mind, remain steady and stable, and you will not have to endure beatings.

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਹੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā guṇ gāvahi sahji samāvahī rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ गुण गावहि सहजि समावही राम ॥

O my mind, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, you shall merge into Him with intuitive ease.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇ ਰਸੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਾਰਹੇ ॥

guṇ gāi rām rasāi rasīhi gur giān añjnu sārhē ॥

गुण गाइ राम रसाइ रसीअहि गुर गिआन अंजनु सारहे ॥

Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, be happy. Apply the ointment of spiritual wisdom to your eyes.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੋਕ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਹੇ ॥

trai lōk dīpku sabdi chānṇu pañc dūt saṅghārahē ॥

त्रै लोक दीपकु सबदि चानणु पंच दूत संघारहे ॥

The Word of the Shabad is the lamp which illuminates the three worlds; it slaughters the five demons.

ਭੈ ਕਾਟਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਤਰਹਿ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਾਰਏ ॥

bhai kāṭi nirbhau tarhi dutru guri miliai kāraj sāraē ॥

भै काटि निरभउ तरहि दुतरु गुरि मिलिऐ कारज सारए ॥

Quieting your fears, become fearless, and you shall cross over the impassible world ocean. Meeting the Guru, your affairs shall be resolved.

ਰੂਪੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਏ ॥੩॥

rūpu raṅgu piāru hari siu hari āpi kirpā dhāraē ॥3॥

रूपु रंगु पिआरु हरि सिउ हरि आपि किरपा धारए ॥३॥

You shall find the joy and the beauty of the Lord's Love and Affection; the Lord Himself shall shower you with His Grace. ||3||

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā tū kiā lai āiā kiā lai jāisī rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ तू किआ लै आइआ किआ लै जाइसी राम ॥

O my mind, why did you come into the world? What will you take with you when you go?

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤਾ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਸੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā tā chhuṭsī jā bharmu chukāisī rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ ता छुटसी जा भरमु चुकाइसी राम ॥

O my mind, you shall be emancipated, when you eliminate your doubts.

ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਖਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਾਉ ਪਛਾਣਹੇ ॥

dhanu sañchi hari hari nām vakhru gur sabdi bhāu pachhāṇhē ॥

धनु संचि हरि हरि नाम वखरु गुर सबदि भाउ पछाणहे ॥

So gather the wealth and capital of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, you shall realize its value.

ਮੈਲੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣਹੇ ॥

mailu parhari sabdi nirmalu mahlu gharu sachu jāṇhē ॥

मैलु परहरि सबदि निरमलु महलु घरु सचु जाणहे ॥

Filth shall be taken away, through the Immaculate Word of the Shabad; you shall know the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, your true home.

ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਿਧਾਵਹਿ ਝੋਲਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀ ਰਸੋ ॥

pati nāmu pāvahi ghari sidhāvhi jhōli ammrit pī rasō ॥

पति नामु पावहि घरि सिधावहि झोलि अंम्रित पी रसो ॥

Through the Naam, you shall obtain honor, and come home. Eagerly drink in the Ambrosial Amrit.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੋ ॥੪॥

hari nāmu dhiāīai sabdi rasu pāīai vaḍbhāgi japīai hari jasō ॥4॥

हरि नामु धिआईऐ सबदि रसु पाईऐ वडभागि जपीऐ हरि जसो ॥४॥

Meditate on the Lord's Name, and you shall obtain the sublime essence of the Shabad; by great good fortune, chant the Praises of the Lord. ||4||

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਉੜੀਆ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਕਿਉ ਚੜੈ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā binu pauṛīā mandri kiu chaṛai rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ बिनु पउड़ीआ मंदरि किउ चड़ै राम ॥

O my mind, without a ladder, how will you climb up to the Temple of the Lord?

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਅੰਬੜੈ ਰਾਮ ॥

ē man mēriā binu bēṛī pāri na ambṛai rām ॥

ए मन मेरिआ बिनु बेड़ी पारि न अंबड़ै राम ॥

O my mind, without a boat, you shall not reach the other shore.

ਪਾਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਏ ॥

pāri sājnu apāru prītmu gur sabad surti laṅghāvē ॥

पारि साजनु अपारु प्रीतमु गुर सबद सुरति लंघावए ॥

On that far shore is Your Beloved, Infinite Friend. Only your awareness of the Guru's Shabad will carry you across.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਏ ॥

mili sādhsaṅgti karahi ralīā phiri na pachhōtāvē ॥

मिलि साधसंगति करहि रलीआ फिरि न पछोतावए ॥

Join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and you shall enjoy ecstasy; you shall not regret or repent later on.

ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਾਚਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਓ ॥

kari daiā dānu daiāl sāchā hari nām saṅgti pāvaō ॥

करि दइआ दानु दइआल साचा हरि नाम संगति पावओ ॥

Be Merciful, O Merciful True Lord God: please give me the Blessing of the Lord's Name, and the Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਪਇਅੰਪੈ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਵਓ ॥੫॥੬॥

nānku paiampai suṇhu prītam gur sabdi manu samjhāvaō ॥5॥6॥

नानकु पइअंपै सुणहु प्रीतम गुर सबदि मनु समझावओ ॥५॥६॥

Nanak prays: please hear me, O my Beloved; instruct my mind through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||5||6||
