ਧਰਤੀ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠਿ ਹੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਿ ਵਸੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ॥

ਧਰਤੀ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠਿ ਹੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਿ ਵਸੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ॥

dhartī pairāṃ hēṭhi hai dhartī hēṭhi vasndā pāṇī॥

धरती पैरां हेठि है धरती हेठि वसंदा पाणी॥

The earth is under our feet but under the earth is water.

ਪਾਣੀ ਚਲੈ ਨੀਵਾਣ ਨੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸੁਧੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ॥

pāṇī chalai nīvāṇ nō nirmalu sītlu sudhu parāṇī॥

पाणी चलै नीवाण नो निरमलु सीतलु सुधु पराणी॥

Water flows downward and makes others cool and clean.

ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੈ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਜਾਣੀ॥

bahu raṅgī ik raṅgu hai sabhnāṃ andri ikō jāṇī॥

बहु रंगी इक रंगु है सभनां अंदरि इको जाणी॥

Mixed with various colours it assumes those colours but in itself it is colourless common to all.

ਤਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਧੁਪ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਵੈ ਠੰਢਾ ਵਿਰਤੀ ਹਾਣੀ॥

tatā hōvai dhup vichi chhāvai ṭhaṇḍhā viratī hāṇī॥

तता होवै धुप विचि छावै ठंढा विरती हाणी॥

It becomes hot in the sun and cool in the shade, that is it acts in consonance with its companions (sun and shade).

ਤਪਦਾ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਨੋ ਠੰਢੇ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ॥

tapdā parupkār nō ṭhaṇḍhē parupkār vihāṇī॥

तपदा परउपकार नो ठंढे परउपकार विहाणी॥

Whethger hot or cold its purpose always is other's good.

ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਤਪਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਠੰਢਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਬਿਲਮੁ ਨ ਆਣੀ॥

agni bujhāē tapti vichi ṭhaṇḍhā hōvai bilmu na āṇī॥

अगनि बुझाए तपति विचि ठंढा होवै बिलमु न आणी॥

Though itself warm it extinguishes the fire and takes no time to get cold again.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖੀ ਦੀ ਏਹੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ॥੧੩॥

guru sikhī dī ēhu nīsāṇī ॥13॥

गुरु सिखी दी एहु नीसाणी ॥१३॥

These are the virtuous marks of the Sikh culture.
