ਬਿਰਖੈ ਹੇਠਿ ਸਭਿ ਜੰਤ ਇਕਠੇ ॥

मारू महला ५ ॥

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:

ਬਿਰਖੈ ਹੇਠਿ ਸਭਿ ਜੰਤ ਇਕਠੇ ॥

birkhai hēṭhi sabhi jant ikṭhē ॥

बिरखै हेठि सभि जंत इकठे ॥

Beneath the tree, all beings have gathered.

ਇਕਿ ਤਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਬੋਲਨਿ ਮਿਠੇ ॥

iki tatē iki bōlni miṭhē ॥

इकि तते इकि बोलनि मिठे ॥

Some are hot-headed, and some speak very sweetly.

ਅਸਤੁ ਉਦੋਤੁ ਭਇਆ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਅਉਧ ਵਿਹਾਣੀਆ ॥੧॥

astu udōtu bhaiā uṭhi chalē jiu jiu audh vihāṇīā ॥1॥

असतु उदोतु भइआ उठि चले जिउ जिउ अउध विहाणीआ ॥१॥

Sunset has come, and they rise up and depart; their days have run their course and expired. ||1||

ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇਦੜ ਸਰਪਰ ਮੁਠੇ ॥

pāp karēdaṛ sarpar muṭhē ॥

पाप करेदड़ सरपर मुठे ॥

Those who committed sins are sure to be ruined.

ਅਜਰਾਈਲਿ ਫੜੇ ਫੜਿ ਕੁਠੇ ॥

ajrāīli phaṛē phaṛi kuṭhē ॥

अजराईलि फड़े फड़ि कुठे ॥

Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, seizes and tortures them.

ਦੋਜਕਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਬਾਣੀਆ ॥੨॥

dōjki pāē sirjaṇhārai lēkhā maṅgai bāṇīā ॥2॥

दोजकि पाए सिरजणहारै लेखा मंगै बाणीआ ॥२॥

They are consigned to hell by the Creator Lord, and the Accountant calls them to give their account. ||2||

ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਭਈਆ ਬੇਬਾ ॥

saṅgi na kōī bhaīā bēbā ॥

संगि न कोई भईआ बेबा ॥

No brothers or sisters can go with them.

ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਵੇਸਾ ॥

mālu jōbnu dhanu chhōḍi vēsā ॥

मालु जोबनु धनु छोडि वेसा ॥

Leaving behind their property, youth and wealth, they march off.

ਕਰਣ ਕਰੀਮ ਨ ਜਾਤੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਜਿਉ ਘਾਣੀਆ ॥੩॥

karaṇ karīm na jātō karatā til pīṛē jiu ghāṇīā ॥3॥

करण करीम न जातो करता तिल पीड़े जिउ घाणीआ ॥३॥

They do not know the kind and compassionate Lord; they shall be crushed like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||3||

ਖੁਸਿ ਖੁਸਿ ਲੈਦਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਈ ॥

khusi khusi laidā vastu parāī ॥

खुसि खुसि लैदा वसतु पराई ॥

You happily, cheerfully steal the possessions of others,

ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਖੁਦਾਈ ॥

vēkhai suṇē tērai nāli khudāī ॥

वेखै सुणे तेरै नालि खुदाई ॥

But the Lord God is with you, watching and listening.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਲਬਿ ਪਇਆ ਖਾਤ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਲੀ ਗਲ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਆ ॥੪॥

dunīā labi paiā khāt andri aglī gal na jāṇīā ॥4॥

दुनीआ लबि पइआ खात अंदरि अगली गल न जाणीआ ॥४॥

Through worldly greed, you have fallen into the pit; you know nothing of the future. ||4||

ਜਮਿ ਜਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ॥

jami jami marai marai phiri jammai ॥

जमि जमि मरै मरै फिरि जंमै ॥

You shall be born and born again, and die and die again, only to be reincarnated again.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਜਾਇ ਪਇਆ ਦੇਸਿ ਲੰਮੈ ॥

bahutu sajāi paiā dēsi lammai ॥

बहुतु सजाइ पइआ देसि लंमै ॥

You shall suffer terrible punishment, on your way to the land beyond.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹੈ ਪਰਾਣੀਆ ॥੫॥

jini kītā tisai na jāṇī andhā tā dukhu sahai parāṇīā ॥5॥

जिनि कीता तिसै न जाणी अंधा ता दुखु सहै पराणीआ ॥५॥

The mortal does not know the One who created him; he is blind, and so he shall suffer. ||5||

ਖਾਲਕ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਮੁਠਾ ॥

khālak thāvhu bhulā muṭhā ॥

खालक थावहु भुला मुठा ॥

Forgetting the Creator Lord, he is ruined.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਖੇਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਰੁਠ ਤੁਠਾ ॥

dunīā khēlu burā ruṭh tuṭhā ॥

दुनीआ खेलु बुरा रुठ तुठा ॥

The drama of the world is bad; it brings sadness and then happiness.

ਸਿਦਕੁ ਸਬੂਰੀ ਸੰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਵਤੈ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੀਆ ॥੬॥

sidku sabūrī santu na miliō vatai āpaṇ bhāṇīā ॥6॥

सिदकु सबूरी संतु न मिलिओ वतै आपण भाणीआ ॥६॥

One who does not meet the Saint does not have faith or contentment; he wanders just as he pleases. ||6||

ਮਉਲਾ ਖੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਆਪੇ ॥ ਇਕਿ ਕਢੇ ਇਕਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥

maulā khēl karē sabhi āpē ॥ iki kaḍhē iki lahri viāpē ॥

मउला खेल करे सभि आपे ॥ इकि कढे इकि लहरि विआपे ॥

The Lord Himself stages all this drama. Some, he lifts up, and some he throws into the waves.

ਜਿਉ ਨਚਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਨਚਨਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਿਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਣੀਆ ॥੭॥

jiu nachāē tiu tiu nacni siri siri kirat vihāṇīā ॥7॥

जिउ नचाए तिउ तिउ नचनि सिरि सिरि किरत विहाणीआ ॥७॥

As He makes them dance, so do they dance. Everyone lives their lives according to their past actions. ||7||

ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥

mihar karē tā khasmu dhiāī ॥

मिहर करे ता खसमु धिआई ॥

When the Lord and Master grants His Grace, then we meditate on Him.

ਸੰਤਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

santā saṅgti narki na pāī ॥

संता संगति नरकि न पाई ॥

In the Society of the Saints, one is not consigned to hell.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਣ ਗੀਤਾ ਨਿਤ ਵਖਾਣੀਆ ॥੮॥੨॥੮॥੧੨॥੨੦॥

ammrit nām dānu nānak kau guṇ gītā nit vakhāṇīā ॥8॥2॥8॥12॥20॥

अंम्रित नाम दानु नानक कउ गुण गीता नित वखाणीआ ॥८॥२॥८॥१२॥२०॥

Please bless Nanak with the gift of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord; he continually sings the songs of Your Glories. ||8||2||8||12||20||
