ਬਿਪ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਦਾਲਦੀ ਬਾਲ ਸਖਾਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਦਾਏ॥

ਬਿਪ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਦਾਲਦੀ ਬਾਲ ਸਖਾਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਦਾਏ॥

bip sudāmā dāldī bāl sakhāī mitr sadāē॥

बिप सुदामा दालदी बाल सखाई मित्र सदाए॥

Sudama, a poor brahman, was known to be a friend of Krishna from childhood.

ਲਾਗੂ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਮ੍ਹਣੀ ਮਿਲ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਦਲਿਦ੍ਰ ਗਵਾਏ॥

lāgū hōī bāmhṇī mil jagdīs dalidr gavāē॥

लागू होई बाम्हणी मिल जगदीस दलिद्र गवाए॥

His brahmin wife always pestered him as to why he did not go to Lord Krishna to alleviate his poverty.

ਚਲਿਆ ਗਿਣਦਾ ਗਟੀਆਂ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਕਰ ਜਾਈਏ ਕੌਣ ਮਿਲਾਏ॥

chaliā giṇdā gaṭīāṃ kyōṃ kar jāīē kauṇ milāē॥

चलिआ गिणदा गटीआं क्यों कर जाईए कौण मिलाए॥

He was perplexed and pondered over how he could get re-introduced to Krishna, who could help him meet the Lord.

ਪਹੁਤਾ ਨਗਰ ਦੁਆਰਕਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੁਆਰ ਖਲੋਤਾ ਜਾਏ॥

pahutā nagar duārkā siṅgh duār khalōtā jāē॥

पहुता नगर दुआरका सिंघ दुआर खलोता जाए॥

He reached the town of Duaraka and stood before the main gate (of the palace of Krishna).

ਦੂਰਹੁੰ ਦੇਖ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਕਰ ਛੱਡ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਆਏ॥

dūrhuṃ dēkh ḍaṇḍaut kar chhaḍḍ siṅghāsaṇ hari jī āē॥

दूरहुं देख डंडउत कर छॱड सिंघासण हरि जी आए॥

Seeing him from a distance, Krishna, the Lord, bowed and leaving his throne came to Sudama.

ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਪਰਦਖਣਾ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਲ ਲਾਏ॥

pahilē dē pardakhṇā pairīṃ pai kē lai gal lāē॥

पहिले दे परदखणा पैरीं पै के लै गल लाए॥

First he circumambulated around Sudama and then touching his feet he embraced him.

ਚਰਣੋਦਕ ਲੈ ਪੈਰ ਧੋਇ ਸ਼ਿੰਘਾਸਣ ਉਪਰ ਬੈਠਾਏ॥

charṇōdak lai pair dhōi shiṅghāsaṇ upar baiṭhāē॥

चरणोदक लै पैर धोइ शिंघासण उपर बैठाए॥

Washing his feet he took that water and made Sudama sit on the throne.

ਪੁਛੇ ਕੁਸਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਏ॥

puchhē kusal piār kar gur sēvā dī kathā suṇāē॥

पुछे कुसल पिआर कर गुर सेवा दी कथा सुणाए॥

Then Krishna lovingly enquired about his welfare and talked about the time when they were together in the service of the guru (Sandipani).

ਲੈਕੇ ਤੰਦਲ ਚਬਿਓਨ ਵਿਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਅਗੇ ਪਹੁਚਾਏ॥

laikē tandal chabiōn vidā karē agē pahuchāē॥

लैके तंदल चबिओन विदा करे अगे पहुचाए॥

Krishna asked for the rice sent by Sudama’s wife and after eating, came out to see off his friend Sudama.

ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਕੁਚ ਪਠਾਏ ॥੯॥

chār padārath sakuc paṭhāē ॥9॥

चार पदारथ सकुच पठाए ॥९॥

Though all the four boons (righteousness,wealth,fulfillment of desire and libereation) were given to Sudama by Krishna, Krishna's humbleness still made him feel totally helpless.
