ਬਾਬਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਸਾਰੋਵਾ ॥

ਵਡਹੰਸੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

वडहंसु महला १ ॥

Wadahans, First Mehl:

ਬਾਬਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਸਾਰੋਵਾ ॥

bābā āiā hai uṭhi chalṇā ihu jagu jhūṭhu pasārōvā ॥

बाबा आइआ है उठि चलणा इहु जगु झूठु पसारोवा ॥

O Baba, whoever has come, will rise up and leave; this world is merely a false show.

ਸਚਾ ਘਰੁ ਸਚੜੈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਖਰਾ ਸਚਿਆਰੋਵਾ ॥

sachā gharu sacṛai sēvīai sachu kharā sachiārōvā ॥

सचा घरु सचड़ै सेवीऐ सचु खरा सचिआरोवा ॥

One's true home is obtained by serving the True Lord; real Truth is obtained by being truthful.

ਕੂੜਿ ਲਬਿ ਜਾਂ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਸੀ ਅਗੈ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਠਾਓ ॥

kūṛi labi jāṃ thāi na pāsī agai lahai na ṭhāō ॥

कूड़ि लबि जां थाइ न पासी अगै लहै न ठाओ ॥

By falsehood and greed, no place of rest is found, and no place in the world hereafter is obtained.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਉ ਨ ਬੈਸਹੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਿਉ ਸੁੰੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਓ ॥

antri āu na baishu kahīai jiu suai ghari kāō ॥

अंतरि आउ न बैसहु कहीऐ जिउ सुंै घरि काओ ॥

No one invites him to come in and sit down. He is like a crow in a deserted home.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਡਾ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਜਗੁ ਸਬਾਏ ॥

jammṇu marṇu vaḍā vēchhōṛā binsai jagu sabāē ॥

जंमणु मरणु वडा वेछोड़ा बिनसै जगु सबाए ॥

Trapped by birth and death, he is separated from the Lord for such a long time; the whole world is wasting away.

ਲਬਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਖੜਾ ਰੂਆਏ ॥੧॥

labi dhandhai māiā jagtu bhulāiā kālu khaṛā rūāē ॥1॥

लबि धंधै माइआ जगतु भुलाइआ कालु खड़ा रूआए ॥१॥

Greed, worldly entanglements and Maya deceive the world. Death hovers over its head, and causes it to weep. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਆਵਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਹ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹ ਆਸੀਸਾ ਹੇ ॥

bābā āvhu bhāīhō gali milah mili mili dēh āsīsā hē ॥

बाबा आवहु भाईहो गलि मिलह मिलि मिलि देह आसीसा हे ॥

Come, O Baba, and Siblings of Destiny - let's join together; take me in your arms, and bless me with your prayers.

ਬਾਬਾ ਸਚੜਾ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕੀਆ ਦੇਹ ਅਸੀਸਾ ਹੇ ॥

bābā sacṛā mēlu na chukaī prītam kīā dēh asīsā hē ॥

बाबा सचड़ा मेलु न चुकई प्रीतम कीआ देह असीसा हे ॥

O Baba, union with the True Lord cannot be broken; bless me with your prayers for union with my Beloved.

ਆਸੀਸਾ ਦੇਵਹੋ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇਵਹੋ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੋ ॥

āsīsā dēvhō bhagti karēvhō miliā kā kiā mēlō ॥

आसीसा देवहो भगति करेवहो मिलिआ का किआ मेलो ॥

Bless me with your prayers, that I may perform devotional worship service to my Lord; for those already united with Him, what is there to unite?

ਇਕਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਥੇਹਹੁ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਖੇਲੋ ॥

iki bhūlē nāvhu thēhhu thāvhu gur sabadī sachu khēlō ॥

इकि भूले नावहु थेहहु थावहु गुर सबदी सचु खेलो ॥

Some have wandered away from the Name of the Lord, and lost the Path. The Word of the Guru's Shabad is the true game.

ਜਮ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਵੇਸੇ ॥

jam mārgi nahī jāṇā sabdi samāṇā jugi jugi sāchai vēsē ॥

जम मारगि नही जाणा सबदि समाणा जुगि जुगि साचै वेसे ॥

Do not go on Death's path; remain merged in the Word of the Shabad, the true form throughout the ages.

ਸਾਜਨ ਸੈਣ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਖੋਲੇ ਫਾਸੇ ॥੨॥

sājan saiṇ milhu sañjōgī gur mili khōlē phāsē ॥2॥

साजन सैण मिलहु संजोगी गुर मिलि खोले फासे ॥२॥

Through good fortune, we meet such friends and relatives, who meet with the Guru, and escape the noose of Death. ||2||

ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਂਗੜਾ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

bābā nāṅgṛā āiā jag mahi dukhu sukhu lēkhu likhāiā ॥

बाबा नांगड़ा आइआ जग महि दुखु सुखु लेखु लिखाइआ ॥

O Baba, we come into the world naked, into pain and pleasure, according to the record of our account.

ਲਿਖਿਅੜਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਨਾ ਟਲੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

likhiṛā sāhā nā ṭalai jēhṛā purbi kamāiā ॥

लिखिअड़ा साहा ना टलै जेहड़ा पुरबि कमाइआ ॥

The call of our pre-ordained destiny cannot be altered; it follows from our past actions.

ਬਹਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

bahi sāchai likhiā ammritu bikhiā jitu lāiā titu lāgā ॥

बहि साचै लिखिआ अंम्रितु बिखिआ जितु लाइआ तितु लागा ॥

The True Lord sits and writes of ambrosial nectar, and bitter poison; as the Lord attaches us, so are we attached.

ਕਾਮਣਿਆਰੀ ਕਾਮਣ ਪਾਏ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗਾ ॥

kāmṇiārī kāmaṇ pāē bahu raṅgī gali tāgā ॥

कामणिआरी कामण पाए बहु रंगी गलि तागा ॥

The Charmer, Maya, has worked her charms, and the multi-colored thread is around everyone's neck.

ਹੋਛੀ ਮਤਿ ਭਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਛਾ ਗੁੜੁ ਸਾ ਮਖੀ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

hōchhī mati bhaiā manu hōchhā guṛu sā makhī khāiā ॥

होछी मति भइआ मनु होछा गुड़ु सा मखी खाइआ ॥

Through shallow intellect, the mind becomes shallow, and one eats the fly, along with the sweets.

ਨਾ ਮਰਜਾਦੁ ਆਇਆ ਕਲਿ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਾਂਗੋ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

nā marjādu āiā kali bhītri nāṅgō bandhi chalāiā ॥3॥

ना मरजादु आइआ कलि भीतरि नांगो बंधि चलाइआ ॥३॥

Contrary to custom, he comes into the Dark Age of Kali Yuga naked, and naked he is bound down and sent away again. ||3||

ਬਾਬਾ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਜੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਰੋਵਣਾ ਜਾਨੀਅੜਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥

bābā rōvhu jē kisai rōvṇā jānīṛā bandhi paṭhāiā hai ॥

बाबा रोवहु जे किसै रोवणा जानीअड़ा बंधि पठाइआ है ॥

O Baba, weep and mourn if you must; the beloved soul is bound and driven off.

ਲਿਖਿਅੜਾ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮੇਟੀਐ ਦਰਿ ਹਾਕਾਰੜਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ॥

likhiṛā lēkhu na mēṭīai dari hākārṛā āiā hai ॥

लिखिअड़ा लेखु न मेटीऐ दरि हाकारड़ा आइआ है ॥

The pre-ordained record of destiny cannot be erased; the summons has come from the Lord's Court.

ਹਾਕਾਰਾ ਆਇਆ ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਇਆ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਰੋਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

hākārā āiā jā tisu bhāiā runnē rōvṇahārē ॥

हाकारा आइआ जा तिसु भाइआ रुंने रोवणहारे ॥

The messenger comes, when it pleases the Lord, and the mourners begin to mourn.

ਪੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਭਾਤੀਜੇ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

put bhāī bhātījē rōvahi prītam ati piārē ॥

पुत भाई भातीजे रोवहि प्रीतम अति पिआरे ॥

Sons, brothers, nephews and very dear friends weep and wail.

ਭੈ ਰੋਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਕੋ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮੁਇਆ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

bhai rōvai guṇ sāri samālē kō marai na muiā nālē ॥

भै रोवै गुण सारि समाले को मरै न मुइआ नाले ॥

Let him weep, who weeps in the Fear of God, cherishing the virtues of God. No one dies with the dead.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਜਾਣ ਸਿਜਾਣਾ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥੪॥੫॥

nānak jugi jugi jāṇ sijāṇā rōvahi sachu samālē ॥4॥5॥

नानक जुगि जुगि जाण सिजाणा रोवहि सचु समाले ॥४॥५॥

O Nanak, throughout the ages, they are known as wise, who weep, remembering the True Lord. ||4||5||
