ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

avri pañc ham ēk janā kiu rākhau ghar bāru manā ॥

अवरि पंच हम एक जना किउ राखउ घर बारु मना ॥

There are five of them, but I am all alone. How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind?

ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥

mārhi lūṭhi nīt nīt kisu āgai karī pukār janā ॥1॥

मारहि लूटहि नीत नीत किसु आगै करी पुकार जना ॥१॥

They are beating and plundering me over and over again; unto whom can I complain? ||1||

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

srī rām nāmā ucru manā ॥

स्री राम नामा उचरु मना ॥

Chant the Name of the Supreme Lord, O my mind.

ਆਗੈ ਜਮ ਦਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

āgai jam dalu bikhmu ghanā ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

आगै जम दलु बिखमु घना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Otherwise, in the world hereafter, you will have to face the awesome and cruel army of Death. ||1||Pause||

ਉਸਾਰਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਸਾ ਧਨਾ ॥

usāri maṛōlī rākhai duārā bhītri baiṭhī sā dhanā ॥

उसारि मड़ोली राखै दुआरा भीतरि बैठी सा धना ॥

God has erected the temple of the body; He has placed the nine doors, and the soul-bride sits within.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਲੁਟੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੨॥

ammrit kēl karē nit kāmṇi avri luṭēni su pañc janā ॥2॥

अंम्रित केल करे नित कामणि अवरि लुटेनि सु पंच जना ॥२॥

She enjoys the sweet play again and again, while the five demons are plundering her. ||2||

ਢਾਹਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਲੂਟਿਆ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਪਕੜੀ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ॥

ḍhāhi maṛōlī lūṭiā dēhurā sā dhan pakṛī ēk janā ॥

ढाहि मड़ोली लूटिआ देहुरा सा धन पकड़ी एक जना ॥

In this way, the temple is being demolished; the body is being plundered, and the soul-bride, left all alone, is captured.

ਜਮ ਡੰਡਾ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਪੜਿਆ ਭਾਗਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੩॥

jam ḍaṇḍā gali saṅglu paṛiā bhāgi gaē sē pañc janā ॥3॥

जम डंडा गलि संगलु पड़िआ भागि गए से पंच जना ॥३॥

Death strikes her down with his rod, the shackles are placed around her neck, and now the five have left. ||3||

ਕਾਮਣਿ ਲੋੜੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੁੜੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਧਾਤਾ ॥

kāmṇi lōṛai suinā rupā mitr luṛēni su khādhātā ॥

कामणि लोड़ै सुइना रुपा मित्र लुड़ेनि सु खाधाता ॥

The wife yearns for gold and silver, and her friends, the senses, yearn for good food.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪॥

nānak pāp karē tin kārṇi jāsī jampuri bādhātā ॥4॥2॥14॥

नानक पाप करे तिन कारणि जासी जमपुरि बाधाता ॥४॥२॥१४॥

O Nanak, she commits sins for their sake; she shall go, bound and gagged, to the City of Death. ||4||2||14||
