Maaroo, First Mehl, Fifth House:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ik-ōṅkār satigur prasādi ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵੈ ॥

ahinisi jāgai nīd na sōvai ॥

अहिनिसि जागै नीद न सोवै ॥

Day and night, he remains awake and aware; he never sleeps or dreams.

ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਵੇਦਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

sō jāṇai jisu vēdan hōvai ॥

सो जाणै जिसु वेदन होवै ॥

He alone knows this, who feels the pain of separation from God.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੇ ਕਾਨ ਲਗੇ ਤਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵੈਦੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

prēm kē kān lagē tan bhītri vaidu ki jāṇai kārī jīu ॥1॥

प्रेम के कान लगे तन भीतरि वैदु कि जाणै कारी जीउ ॥१॥

My body is pierced through with the arrow of love. How can any physician know the cure? ||1||

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਲਾਏ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

jis nō sāchā siphtī lāē ॥ gurmukhi virlē kisai bujhāē ॥

जिस नो साचा सिफती लाए ॥ गुरमुखि विरले किसै बुझाए ॥

Rare is that one, who as Gurmukh, understands, and whom the True Lord links to His Praise.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ammrit kī sār sōī jāṇai ji ammrit kā vāpārī jīu ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

अंम्रित की सार सोई जाणै जि अंम्रित का वापारी जीउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

He alone appreciates the value of the Ambsosial Nectar, who deals in this Ambrosia. ||1||Pause||

ਪਿਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਧਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਰਚਾਏ ॥

pir sētī dhan prēmu rachāē ॥

पिर सेती धन प्रेमु रचाए ॥

The soul-bride is in love with her Husband Lord;

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਥਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

gur kai sabdi tathā chitu lāē ॥

गुर कै सबदि तथा चितु लाए ॥

The focuses her consciousness on the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਧਨ ਖਰੀ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਤਿਖਾ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

sahaj sētī dhan kharī suhēlī trisnā tikhā nivārī jīu ॥2॥

सहज सेती धन खरी सुहेली त्रिसना तिखा निवारी जीउ ॥२॥

The soul-bride is joyously embellished with intuitive ease; her hunger and thirst are taken away. ||2||

ਸਹਸਾ ਤੋੜੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥

sahasā tōṛē bharmu chukāē ॥

सहसा तोड़े भरमु चुकाए ॥

Tear down skepticism and dispel your doubt;

ਸਹਜੇ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਧਣਖੁ ਚੜਾਏ ॥

sahjē siphtī dhaṇkhu chaṛāē ॥

सहजे सिफती धणखु चड़ाए ॥

With your intuition, draw the bow of the Praise of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਜੋਗਾਧਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

gur kai sabdi marai manu mārē sundri jōgādhārī jīu ॥3॥

गुर कै सबदि मरै मनु मारे सुंदरि जोगाधारी जीउ ॥३॥

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, conquer and subdue your mind; take the support of Yoga - Union with the beautiful Lord. ||3||

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਲਿਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ॥

haumai jaliā manhu visārē ॥

हउमै जलिआ मनहु विसारे ॥

Burnt by egotism, one forgets the Lord from his mind.

ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਵਜਹਿ ਖੜਗ ਕਰਾਰੇ ॥

jam puri vajhi khaṛag karārē ॥

जम पुरि वजहि खड़ग करारे ॥

In the City of Death, he is attacked with massive swords.

ਅਬ ਕੈ ਕਹਿਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਲਈ ਤੂ ਸਹੁ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥

ab kai kahiai nāmu na milaī tū sahu jīaṛē bhārī jīu ॥4॥

अब कै कहिऐ नामु न मिलई तू सहु जीअड़े भारी जीउ ॥४॥

Then, even if he asks for it, he will not receive the Lord's Name; O soul, you shall suffer terrible punishment. ||4||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਪਵਹਿ ਖਿਆਲੀ ॥

māiā mamtā pavhi khiālī ॥

माइआ ममता पवहि खिआली ॥

You are distracted by thoughts of Maya and worldly attachment.

ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਫਾਸਹਿਗਾ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੀ ॥

jam puri phāshigā jam jālī ॥

जम पुरि फासहिगा जम जाली ॥

In the City of Death, you will be caught by the noose of the Messenger of Death.

ਹੇਤ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਹਿ ਤਾ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥

hēt kē bandhan tōṛi na sākhi tā jamu karē khuārī jīu ॥5॥

हेत के बंधन तोड़ि न साकहि ता जमु करे खुआरी जीउ ॥५॥

You cannot break free from the bondage of loving attachment, and so the Messenger of Death will torture you. ||5||

ਨਾ ਹਉ ਕਰਤਾ ਨਾ ਮੈ ਕੀਆ ॥

nā hau karatā nā mai kīā ॥

ना हउ करता ना मै कीआ ॥

I have done nothing; I am doing nothing now.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥

ammritu nāmu satiguri dīā ॥

अंम्रितु नामु सतिगुरि दीआ ॥

The True Guru has blessed me with the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੬॥੧॥੧੨॥

jisu tū dēhi tisai kiā chārā nānak sarṇi tumārī jīu ॥6॥1॥12॥

जिसु तू देहि तिसै किआ चारा नानक सरणि तुमारी जीउ ॥६॥१॥१२॥

What other efforts can anyone make, when You bestow Your blessing? Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary. ||6||1||12||
