ਅਬ ਪੂਛੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਾ ॥

सारग महला ५ ॥

Saarang, Fifth Mehl:

ਅਬ ਪੂਛੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਾ ॥

ab pūchhhē kiā kahā ॥

अब पूछे किआ कहा ॥

Now if he is asked, what can he say?

ਲੈਨੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਨੀਕੋ ਬਾਵਰ ਬਿਖੁ ਸਿਉ ਗਹਿ ਰਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

lainō nāmu ammrit rasu nīkō bāvar bikhu siu gahi rahā ॥1॥ rahāu ॥

लैनो नामु अंम्रित रसु नीको बावर बिखु सिउ गहि रहा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

He was supposed to have gathered the sublime essence of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, but instead, the mad-man was busy with poison. ||1||Pause||

ਦੁਲਭ ਜਨਮੁ ਚਿਰੰਕਾਲ ਪਾਇਓ ਜਾਤਉ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲਹਾ ॥

dulabh janmu chirṅkāl pāiō jātau kauḍī badlahā ॥

दुलभ जनमु चिरंकाल पाइओ जातउ कउडी बदलहा ॥

This human life, so difficult to obtain, was finally obtained after such a long time. He is losing it in exchange for a shell.

ਕਾਥੂਰੀ ਕੋ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਆਇਓ ਲਾਦਿਓ ਕਾਲਰ ਬਿਰਖ ਜਿਵਹਾ ॥੧॥

kāthūrī kō gāhku āiō lādiō kālar birakh jivhā ॥1॥

काथूरी को गाहकु आइओ लादिओ कालर बिरख जिवहा ॥१॥

He came to buy musk, but instead, he has loaded dust and thistle grass. ||1||

ਆਇਓ ਲਾਭੁ ਲਾਭਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਮੋਹਨਿ ਠਾਗਉਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਉਲਝਿ ਪਹਾ ॥

āiō lābhu lābhan kai tāī mōhni ṭhāgaurī siu uljhi pahā ॥

आइओ लाभु लाभन कै ताई मोहनि ठागउरी सिउ उलझि पहा ॥

He comes in search of profits, but he is entangled in the enticing illusion of Maya.

ਕਾਚ ਬਾਦਰੈ ਲਾਲੁ ਖੋਈ ਹੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਕਦਿ ਲਹਾ ॥੨॥

kāc bādrai lālu khōī hai phiri ihu ausru kadi lahā ॥2॥

काच बादरै लालु खोई है फिरि इहु अउसरु कदि लहा ॥२॥

He loses the jewel, in exchange for mere glass. When will he have this blessed opportunity again? ||2||

ਸਗਲ ਪਰਾਧ ਏਕੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਛੋਡਹ ਦਾਸਿ ਭਜਹਾ ॥

sagal parādh ēku guṇu nāhī ṭhākuru chhōḍah dāsi bhajhā ॥

सगल पराध एकु गुणु नाही ठाकुरु छोडह दासि भजहा ॥

He is full of sins, and he has not even one redeeming virtue. Forsaking his Lord and Master, he is involved with Maya, God's slave.

ਆਈ ਮਸਟਿ ਜੜਵਤ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਜਿਉ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਂਨ੍‍ਹਿਾ ॥੩॥

āī masṭi jaṛvat kī niāī jiu taskaru dari sānn‍hā ॥3॥

आई मसटि जड़वत की निआई जिउ तसकरु दरि सांन्‍हिा ॥३॥

And when the final silence comes, like inanimate matter, he is caught like a thief at the door. ||3||

ਆਨ ਉਪਾਉ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਸੂਝੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਰਿ ਰਹਾ ॥

ān upāu na kōū sūjhai hari dāsā sarṇī pari rahā ॥

आन उपाउ न कोऊ सूझै हरि दासा सरणी परि रहा ॥

I cannot see any other way out. I seek the Sanctuary of the Lord's slaves.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਜਉ ਸਗਲੇ ਅਉਗਨ ਮੇਟਿ ਧਰਹਾ ॥੪॥੪॥

kahu nānak tab hī man chhuṭīai jau saglē augan mēṭi dharhā ॥4॥4॥

कहु नानक तब ही मन छुटीऐ जउ सगले अउगन मेटि धरहा ॥४॥४॥

Says Nanak, the mortal is emancipated, only when all his demerits and faults are erased and eradicated. ||4||4||
